    Leaching of selected PGMs : a thermodynamic and electrochemical study employing less aggressive lixiviants

    Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 74-79).Historically the platinum group metals (PGMs) have been, and are still being dissolved by means of rather aggressive methods, e.g. aqua regia. Limited research has been conducted into the dissolution of the PGMs using different oxidizing agents. The dissolution of gold on the other hand has been afforded extensive research, and numerous papers and review articles have been published on the subject. The last number of years has seen the biggest application by volume of the PGMs as part of autocatalysts towards the degradation of harmful motor vehicle exhaust gases. This has subsequently sparked research into the recovery of specifically platinum, palladium, and rhodium from spent autocatalysts. Currently pyrometallurgical recovery of PGMs is being employed predominantly. A hydrometallurgical process on the other hand is, based on current technology, still a rather aggressive process that makes for high maintenance costs and an unpleasant environment. Gold has traditionally been dissolved by making use of cyanide, which is still the major route for gold dissolution. Due to environmental concerns lixiviants such as thiosulphate (S2O3 2-), thiourea (H2NCSNH2), and thiocyanate (SCN-) are gaining acceptance due to them being more environmentally friendly and giving good recoveries. These ‘softer’ alternatives have however not been tested on the PGMs. It is therefore the aim of this study to obtain an improved understanding of the leaching of the PGMs using lixiviants less aggressive than aqua-regia. These lixiviants include (i) SCN-, (ii) S2O3 2-, (iii) H2NCSNH2, and (iv) AlCl3/HCl. A thermodynamic study highlighted the fact that thermodynamic data for platinum-, palladium- and rhodium complexes are basically non-existent. To therefore obtain a clearer thermodynamic understanding of the leaching of the platinum group metals by means of these alternative lixiviants, future detailed speciation and thermodynamic investigations need to be conducted. An exploratory electrochemical investigation focusing on open circuit potentials and potentiodynamic scans, showed AlCl3 / HCl / NaOCl to be a good candidate for the leaching of the platinum group metals followed by SCN- / Fe3+ and CS(NH2)2 / Fe3+. Actual leach results, employing virgin autocatalysts as sample material, again highlighted the potential of AlCl3 / HCl / NaOCl as being a good lixiviant system. The surprise package, however, has been SCN- / Fe3+ that rendered very good results for Pd and Pt

    Teachers’ beliefs and their intention to use interactive simulations in their classrooms

    In this pilot study, we sought to examine the influence of the beliefs of Grade 10 to 12 physical science teachers on their intended and actual usage of interactive simulations (Physics Education Technology, or PhET) in their classrooms. A combination of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, the Technology Acceptance Model and the Innovation Diffusion Theory was used to examine the influence of teachers’ attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control on their intention to use simulations in their classrooms. Using regression and factor analyses, it was found that beliefs about the perceived usefulness and the pedagogical compatibility of PhET have a significant effect on teachers’ attitude towards the use of the simulations in their classrooms. The expectations of the teachers’ colleagues contribute to the subjective norm of these teachers. The regression and partial correlation result also highlights the importance of teachers’ general technology proficiency. Although we were not able to confirm a direct link between attitudes, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and the teachers’ behaviour intention we show the influence of behaviour intention on the actual use of the simulations with an accuracy of 70.83%.Keywords: interactive simulations; PhET project; physics; teacher beliefs;Theory of Planned Behaviou

    A Holistic Professional Development model for South African physical science teachers

    The state of mathematics and science education in South Africa is a cause for concern. This situation can be attributed, in part, to many mathematics and science teachers’ limited content knowledge, ineffective teaching approaches, and unprofessional attitudes. To address these three problem areas simultaneously, a holistic model for the development of Grades 10 to 12 Physical Science teachers was constructed and evaluated against national and international benchmarks. The effects of the model were assessed over a period of four years with 75 teachers. The model was developed in a distance education context, with no face-to-face contact required. It comprises the following elements: a study guide which integrates the development of teachers’ content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, cognitive skills and experimental skills; reflective journals; assignments; workshops; peer support and sciencekits. We briefly describe the research that culminated in the Holistic ProfessionalDevelopment (HPD) model, followed by an account of each element of the model. We then present evidence that suggests that the model is effective in helping teachers develop along three desired dimensions, namely, content knowledge, teaching approaches, and professional attitudes

    The evolution of the specific star formation rate of massive galaxies to z ~ 1.8 in the E-CDFS

    We study the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) of mid-infrared (IR) selected galaxies in the extended Chandra Deep Field South (E-CDFS). We use a combination of U-K GaBoDS and MUSYC data, deep IRAC observations from SIMPLE, and deep MIPS data from FIDEL. This unique multi-wavelength data set allows us to investigate the SFR history of massive galaxies out to redshift z ~ 1.8. We determine star formation rates using both the rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity from young, hot stars and the total IR luminosity of obscured star formation obtained from the MIPS 24 um flux. We find that at all redshifts the galaxies with higher masses have substantially lower specific star formation rates than lower mass galaxies. The average specific star formation rates increase with redshift, and the rate of incline is similar for all galaxies (roughly (1+z)^{n}, n = 5.0 +/- 0.4). It does not seem to be a strong function of galaxy mass. Using a subsample of galaxies with masses M_*> 10^11 M_sun, we measured the fraction of galaxies whose star formation is quenched. We consider a galaxy to be in quiescent mode when its specific star formation rate does not exceed 1/(3 x t_H), where t_H is the Hubble time. The fraction of quiescent galaxies defined as such decreases with redshift out to z ~ 1.8. We find that, at that redshift, 19 +/-9 % of the M_* > 10^11 M_sun sources would be considered quiescent according to our criterion.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Distant red galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

    We take advantage of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) data to study the restframe optical and ultra violet (UV) morphologies of the novel population of Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs). Six galaxies with J-Ks > 2.3 are found to Ks=21.5, five of which have photometric redshifts z_phot > 2, corresponding to a surface density of 0.9/arcmin^2. The surface brightness distributions of the z_phot > 2 galaxies are better represented by exponential disks than R^{1/4}-laws. Two of the z_phot > 2 galaxies are extended, while three have compact morphologies. The restframe optical morphology of the z_phot > 2 galaxies is quite different from the restframe UV morphology: all the galaxies have red central components which dominate in the NICMOS H_{160}-band images, and distinct off-center blue features which show up in (and often dominate) the ACS images. The mean measured effective radius of the z_phot > 2 galaxies is =1.9+/-1.4 kpc, similar (within the errors) to the mean size of LBGs at similar redshifts. All the DRGs are resolved in the ACS images, while four are resolved in the NICMOS images. Two of the z_phot > 2 galaxies are bright X-ray sources and hence host AGN. The diverse restframe optical and UV morphological properties of DRGs derived here suggest that they have complex stellar populations, consisting of both evolved populations that dominate the mass and the restframe optical light, and younger populations, which show up as patches of star formation in the restframe UV light; in many ways resembling the properties of normal local galaxies. This interpretation is supported by fits to the broadband SEDs, which for all five z_phot > 2 are best represented by models with extended star formation histories and substantial amounts of dust.Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ

    Psychometric comparison of paper-and-pencil and online personality assessments in a selection setting

    The goal of the study was to determine whether the Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32i) yielded comparable results when two different modes of administration, namely paper and-pencil and Internet- based administration, were used in real-life, high-stakes selection settings. Two studies were conducted in which scores obtained online in unproctored settings were compared with scores obtained during proctored paper-and-pencil settings. The psychometric properties of the paper-and-pencil and Internet-based applications were strikingly similar. Structural equation modelling with EQS indicated substantial support for the hypothesis that covariance matrices of the paper-and-pencil and online applications in both studies were identical. It was concluded that relationships between the OPQ32i scales were not affected by mode of administration or supervision
