Toward the next generation of research into small area effects on health : a synthesis of multilevel investigations published since July 1998.
To map out area effects on health research, this study had the following aims: (1) to inventory multilevel investigations of area effects on self rated health, cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, and mortality among adults; (2) to describe and critically discuss methodological approaches employed and results observed; and (3) to formulate selected recommendations for advancing the study of area effects on health. Overall, 86 studies were inventoried. Although several innovative methodological approaches and analytical designs were found, small areas are most often operationalised using administrative and statistical spatial units. Most studies used indicators of area socioeconomic status derived from censuses, and few provided information on the validity and reliability of measures of exposures. A consistent finding was that a significant portion of the variation in health is associated with area context independently of individual characteristics. Area effects on health, although significant in most studies, often depend on the health outcome studied, the measure of area exposure used, and the spatial scale at which associations are examined
Interval Selection in the Streaming Model
A set of intervals is independent when the intervals are pairwise disjoint.
In the interval selection problem we are given a set of intervals
and we want to find an independent subset of intervals of largest cardinality.
Let denote the cardinality of an optimal solution. We
discuss the estimation of in the streaming model, where we
only have one-time, sequential access to the input intervals, the endpoints of
the intervals lie in , and the amount of the memory is
constrained.
For intervals of different sizes, we provide an algorithm in the data stream
model that computes an estimate of that, with
probability at least , satisfies . For same-length
intervals, we provide another algorithm in the data stream model that computes
an estimate of that, with probability at
least , satisfies . The space used by our algorithms is bounded
by a polynomial in and . We also show that no better
estimations can be achieved using bits of storage.
We also develop new, approximate solutions to the interval selection problem,
where we want to report a feasible solution, that use
space. Our algorithms for the interval selection problem match the optimal
results by Emek, Halld{\'o}rsson and Ros{\'e}n [Space-Constrained Interval
Selection, ICALP 2012], but are much simpler.Comment: Minor correction
Sensitivity Analysis of List Scheduling Heuristics
When jobs have to be processed on a set of identical parallel machines so as to minimize the makespan of the schedule, list scheduling rules form a popular class of heuristics. The order in which jobs appear on the list is assumed here to be determined by the relative size of their processing times; well known special cases are the LPT rule and the SPT rule, in which the jobs are ordered according to non-increasing and non-decreasing processing time respectively. When one of the job processing times is gradually increased, the schedule produced by a list scheduling rule will be affected in a manner reflecting its sensitivity to data perturbations. We analyze this phenomenon and obtain analytical support for the intuitively plausible notion that the sensitivity of a list scheduling rule increases with the quality of the schedule produced

The maintenance of standards is a problem for postgraduate medical examinations, particularly if they use norm-referencing as the sole method of standard setting. In each of its diets, the MRCP(UK) Part 1 Examination includes a number of marker questions, which are unchanged from their use in a previous diet. Discrete Convex Functions on Graphs and Their Algorithmic Applications
The present article is an exposition of a theory of discrete convex functions
on certain graph structures, developed by the author in recent years. This
theory is a spin-off of discrete convex analysis by Murota, and is motivated by
combinatorial dualities in multiflow problems and the complexity classification
of facility location problems on graphs. We outline the theory and algorithmic
applications in combinatorial optimization problems

P2Y1 and P2Y12 receptor cross-talk in calcium signalling: Evidence from nonstarved and long-term serum-deprived glioma C6 cells
The current work presents results of experiments on the calcium response evoked by the stimulation by extracellular nucleotides occurring in control, nonstarved glioma C6 cells and in cells after long-term (96 h) serum starvation. Three nucleotide receptors were studied: P2Y1, P2Y2 and P2Y12. Two of them, P2Y1 and P2Y2, directly stimulate calcium response. The protein level of the P2Y2 receptor did not change during the serum starvation, while P2Y1 protein level fell dramatically. Observed changes in the calcium response generated by P2Y1 are directly correlated with the receptor protein level as well as with the amount of calcium present in the intracellular calcium stores, partially depleted during starvation process. The third receptor, P2Y12, did not directly evoke calcium response, however it is activated by the same ligand as P2Y1. The experiments with AR-C69941MX, the P2Y12-specific antagonist, indicated that in control and serum-starved cells, calcium response evoked by P2Y1 receptor is potentiated by the activity of P2Y12-dependent signaling pathways. This potentiation may be mediated by P2Y12 inhibitory effect on the plasma membrane calcium pump. The calcium influx enhanced by the cooperation of P2Y1 and P2Y12 receptor activity directly depends on the capacitative calcium entrance mechanism
