How far would you drive for fresh food? How some rural New Hampshire residents navigate a dismal food landscape

    Get PDF
Lack of access to food stores with healthy and affordable food is one of the central obstacles to eradicating hunger in America. Approximately 23.5 million Americans live more than a mile from a supermarket, which makes accessing healthy food more challenging. Among low income populations, especially those with young children and limited transportation, this distance can severely limit access to affordable and healthy foods. This brief reports the challenges that eighteen rural New Hampshire mothers face to secure healthy, affordable, and quality foods and suggests ways to help address these challenges

Social Validity Assessment in Social Competence Interventions for Preschool Children: A Review

    Get PDF
Social competence intervention studies published from 1970 to 2008 for preschoolers were reviewed for reports of social validity assessment. Analysis of 90 studies indicated that nearly 27% (n=24) of studies reported at least one measure of social validity assessment for: the goals (n=7), procedures (n=8), or effects (n=19). The methods used for these assessments were described including information about the participants, time of assessment and results. Trends in the rate of social validity assessment, methodological concerns and recommendations for further social validity assessments are discussed

    Ripple of Agony

The creative project I had written is a novel that is telling the story of a man named, Arya, who seems to be a good man while actually he has a very dark secret and past. He loves to hunt for girl in cafés and he later will do whatever he needs to do in captivating the girl's heart. When he gets the girl's heart and trust, he will do what he wants the most, the main purpose of his hunting which is overpowering the girl. In this story, I choose to write about the life of a serial rapist with the theme of love changes everything. It helps me in realizing my aim for writing this work which is to raise more awareness towards the cases of rape that happen around us. In rape cases, the victim is being sympathized while the criminal is being hated. While actually, the criminal also needs support from his surrounding in order to be a better man in the future. What I am trying to say is that we should hate his act, but not the person. In the story, Arya will see how people hate him even after he serves the fifteen years charges and willing to be a better person. As for the genre, I choose realistic fiction in order to make the story believable since it is written based on the research with the main character created according to the characteristic of serial rapist in real life

The Effect of Friendship on Decisions: Field Studies of Real Estate Transactions

    Get PDF
A field study of real estate agents\u27 transactions demonstrates that business friendship affects the negotiation process and the outcome of transactions more for agents with 10 or more years of experience in real estate brokerage than for less experienced agents. Newer agents rely more on friendly relations and on impression management techniques to do well in a transaction, while the more experienced agents consider genuine business friendship and its norms useful for facilitating transactions. Different scripts for friendship may explain the consistency within each of the two groups

    Androgyny/Hermaphroditism: Hebrew Bible

    Get PDF
The Hebrew Bible lacks a term for androgyny or hermaphroditism. The term tumtumim, which identifies persons of indeterminate or “hidden” sex, appears later in rabbinic texts. Nevertheless, sexual fluidity, ambiguity, intersexed persons, and persons with a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics appear in the Genesis creation stories and prophetic texts. While gender transgression is relevant to the general discussion, this entry from The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Gender Studies: Oxford Biblical Studies Online focuses primarily on ancient understandings, namely those presented in the Hebrew Bible, of those of “both sexes.

Natural preconditioners for saddle point systems

    Get PDF
The solution of quadratic or locally quadratic extremum problems subject to linear(ized) constraints gives rise to linear systems in saddle point form. This is true whether in the continuous or discrete setting, so saddle point systems arising from discretization of partial differential equation problems such as those describing electromagnetic problems or incompressible flow lead to equations with this structure as does, for example, the widely used sequential quadratic programming approach to nonlinear optimization.\ud This article concerns iterative solution methods for these problems and in particular shows how the problem formulation leads to natural preconditioners which guarantee rapid convergence of the relevant iterative methods. These preconditioners are related to the original extremum problem and their effectiveness -- in terms of rapidity of convergence -- is established here via a proof of general bounds on the eigenvalues of the preconditioned saddle point matrix on which iteration convergence depends
