The Misgivings of a Pop Culture Enthusiast: On the intersection of philosophy and entertainment
In recent years, dozens of books on philosophy and popular culture have been published. These books have been subjected to a number of criticisms in a number of venuesâincluding other popular philosophy venues. In this paper, I will examine several versions of the criticism that such endeavors are frivolous entertainment. I will argue that, though most of these criticisms do not stand up to scrutiny, they nevertheless express a legitimate worry about the intercourse of philosophy and entertainment. This, I contend, is a criticism the âphilosophy and popular cultureâ genre must live withâand one that cannot easily be dismissed
Heidegger, Arthur Fine, and the Natural Ontological Attitude
In this paper I argue that Arthur Fine and Martin Heidegger present responses to the dispute between realism and antirealism that are remarkably close in character. Both claim that this dispute arises from a failure to take seriously our everyday experience of things in the world. I argue that it is useful to note the similarity between Fine and Heidegger for two distinct reasons: 1) their view provides a viable alternative to the current realist/antirealist disputeâan alternative that has not been given its due, and 2) it allows us to build a bridge between two seemingly distinct traditions
Heideggerâs Underdeveloped Conception of the Undistinguishedness (Indifferenz) of Everyday Human Existence
This chapter provides an interpretation of the early Heideggerâs underdeveloped conception of the undistinguishedness of everyday human existence in Being and Time. After explaining why certain translation choices of some key terms in this text are interpretively and philosophically important, I first provide a concise argument for why the social constitution interpretation of the relation between ownedness and unownedness makes better overall sense of Heideggerâs ambivalent attitude toward the social constitution of the human being than the standard existentialist interpretation of this relation. I then proceed to the heart of this chapter, which develops his inchoate conception of the undistinguishedness of everydayness by arguing that it specifies the third distinctive mode of concrete human existence in addition to ownedness and unownedness. Accordingly, I show how unownedness is actually a generic phenomenon with two distinct species, namely, undistinguishedness and disownedness, which are at once closely related to, but also differ in significant respects from, each other. Consequently, instead of taking for granted a one-dimensional and mutually exclusive opposition between âauthenticityâ and âinauthenticityâ, I argue that we should adopt a two-dimensional and more nuanced understanding of the relations among undistinguishedness, disownedness, and ownedness that intersects with Heideggerâs underappreciated distinction between genuineness and ungenuineness. After raising and replying to some objections to this interpretation of undistinguishedness, I conclude this chapter by briefly sketching three of its philosophical consequences and pointing out its potential as an important resource for contemporary social theories
Variability of Disk Emission in Pre-Main Sequence and Related Stars. I. HD 31648 and HD 163296 - Isolated Herbig Ae Stars Driving Herbig-Haro Flows
Infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering a time span of a quarter
century are presented for HD 31648 (MWC 480) and HD 163296 (MWC 275). Both are
isolated Herbig Ae stars that exhibit signs of active accretion, including
driving bipolar flows with embedded Herbig-Haro (HH) objects. HD 163296 was
found to be relatively quiescent photometrically in its inner disk region, with
the exception of a major increase in emitted flux in a broad wavelength region
centered near 3 microns in 2002. In contrast, HD 31648 has exhibited sporadic
changes in the entire 3-13 micron region throughout this span of time. In both
stars the changes in the 1-5 micron flux indicate structural changes in the
region of the disk near the dust sublimation zone, possibly causing its
distance from the star to vary with time. Repeated thermal cycling through this
region will result in the preferential survival of large grains, and an
increase in the degree of crystallinity. The variability observed in these
objects has important consequences for the interpretation of other types of
observations. For example, source variability will compromise models based on
interferometry measurements unless the interferometry observations are

The fire toxicity of polyurethane foams [Review]
Polyurethane is widely used, with its two major applications, soft furnishings and insulation, having low thermal inertia, and hence enhanced flammability. In addition to their flammability, polyurethanes form carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and other toxic products on decomposition and combustion.
The chemistry of polyurethane foams and their thermal decomposition are discussed in order to assess the relationship between the chemical and physical composition of the foam and the toxic products generated during their decomposition. The toxic product generation during flaming combustion of polyurethane foams is reviewed, in order to relate the yields of toxic products and the overall fire toxicity to the fire conditions. The methods of assessment of fire toxicity are outlined in order to understand how the fire toxicity of polyurethane foams may be quantified. In particular, the ventilation condition has a critical effect on the yield of the two major asphyxiants, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanid
MIF is a common genetic determinant of COVID-19 symptomatic infection and severity
Genetic predisposition to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may contribute to its morbidity and mortality. Comparison of Antibody Repertoires Produced by HIV-1 Infection, Other Chronic and Acute Infections, and Systemic Autoimmune Disease
Background
Antibodies (Abs) produced during HIV-1 infection rarely neutralize a broad range of viral isolates; only eight broadly-neutralizing (bNt) monoclonal (M)Abs have been isolated. Yet, to be effective, an HIV-1 vaccine may have to elicit the essential features of these MAbs. The V genes of all of these bNt MAbs are highly somatically mutated, and the VH genes of five of them encode a long (â„20 aa) third complementarity-determining region (CDR-H3). This led us to question whether long CDR-H3s and high levels of somatic mutation (SM) are a preferred feature of anti-HIV bNt MAbs, or if other adaptive immune responses elicit them in general.
Methodology and Principal Findings
We assembled a VH-gene sequence database from over 700 human MAbs of known antigen specificity isolated from chronic (viral) infections (ChI), acute (bacterial and viral) infections (AcI), and systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD), and compared their CDR-H3 length, number of SMs and germline VH-gene usage. We found that anti-HIV Abs, regardless of their neutralization breadth, tended to have long CDR-H3s and high numbers of SMs. However, these features were also common among Abs associated with other chronic viral infections. In contrast, Abs from acute viral infections (but not bacterial infections) tended to have relatively short CDR-H3s and a low number of SMs, whereas SAD Abs were generally intermediate in CDR-H3 length and number of SMs. Analysis of VH gene usage showed that ChI Abs also tended to favor distal germline VH-genes (particularly VH1-69), especially in Abs bearing long CDR-H3s.
Conclusions and Significance
The striking difference between the Abs produced during chronic vs. acute viral infection suggests that Abs bearing long CDR-H3s, high levels of SM and VH1-69 gene usage may be preferentially selected during persistent infection
