Environmental effects on polymeric matrix composites

    Get PDF
Current epoxy resins utilized in high performance structural composites absorb moisture from high humidity environments. Such moisture absorption causes plasticization of the resin to occur with concurrent swelling and lowering of the glass transition temperature. Similar effects are observed in composites. Data are presented showing the effects of absorbed moisture on Hercules AS/3501-5 graphite/epoxy composites. Prediction of moisture content and distribution in composites, along with reduction in mechanical properties, are discussed

Long-lasting obesity predicts poor work ability at midlife: a 15-year follow-up of the northern Finland 1966 birth cohort study

Objective: To investigate the effect of adulthood obesity on work ability in early midlife during a 15-year follow-up. Methods: The study population included men and women (n = 5470), born in northern Finland in 1966. Participants evaluated their current perceived work ability compared with their lifetime best at the age of 46. Participants’ weight and height were measured at 31 years and self-reported at 46 years, and body mass indexes were calculated. Results: Obesity at both ages, and developing obesity between the ages of 31 and 46 increased the relative risk of poor work ability at 46 years among sexes, and among those in both low and high physically strenuous work. Conclusions: Long-term obesity and developing obesity in mid-adulthood increase the risk of poor work ability. Thus, the promotion of healthy behaviors by policies, healthcare services, and at workplaces is important

Moisture Absorption of Graphite-Epoxy Composites Immersed in Liquids and in Humid Air

Moisture absorption of graphite-epoxy composites immersed in liquids and in himid air were investigated. The moisture content as a function of time and temperature was measured for three materials: Fiberite T300/1034, Hercules AS/3501-5 and Narmco T300/5208. Tests were per formed a) with the materials immersed in No. 2 diesel fuel, in jet A fuel, in aviation oil, in saturated salt water, and in distilled water (in the range of 300 to 322 K) and b)with the materials exposed to humid air (in the range 322 to 366 K). The results obtained were compared to available composite and neat resin data.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68153/2/10.1177_002199837901300205.pd

Changes in IP3 receptor expression and function in aortic smooth muscle of atherosclerotic mice

    Get PDF
Peroxynitrite is an endothelium - independent vasodilator which induces relaxation via membrane hyperpolarisation. A ctivation of IP3 receptors triggers opening of potassium channels and hyperpolarisation. Previously we found that relaxation to peroxynitrite was maintained during development of atherosclerosis due to changes in expression of calcium regulatory proteins. In this study we investigated 1) the mechanism of peroxynitrite - induced relaxation in mouse aorta 2) the effect of atherosclerosis on relaxation to peroxynitrite and other vasodilators 3) the effect of atherosclerosis on expression and function of the IP3 receptor. Aortic function was studied using wire myography and atherosclerosis was induced by fat - feeding ApoE - / - mice . Expression of IP3 receptors was studied using Western blotting and immunohistochemistry . Relaxation to peroxynitrite was attenuated by the IP3 antagonists 2 - APB and xestospongin C and also the Kv channel blocker 4 - AP. Atherosclerosis attenuated vasodilation to cromakalim and the AMPK activator A769662 but not peroxynitrite. Relaxation was attenuated to a greater extent by 2 - APB in atherosclerotic aortae despite reduced expression of IP3 receptors. 4 - AP was less effective in 4 month fat fed ApoE - / - mice. Peroxynitrite relaxation involves IP3 - induced calcium release and K V channel activation. This mechanism becomes less important as atherosclerosis develops and relaxation to peroxynitrite may be maintained by increased calcium extrusion

Cervical Human Papillomavirus Screening among Older Women

Rates of acquisition and clearance of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV) during a 3-year period in women 51 years of age were compared with rates in younger women to provide data on cervical screening for women >50 years of age. Paired, cytologically negative, archived cervical smears taken 3 years apart from 710 women in Nottingham, United Kingdom, were retrieved and tested for HPV infection with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with GP5+/6+ primers. Seventy-one (21.3%) of 333 women 51 years of age who were HPV negative at baseline were positive 3 years later. This percentage was higher than the corresponding acquisition rates among women 21 (15.2%), 31 (14.1%), and 41 (13.3%) years of age, although these differences were not significant. This retrospective study shows that HPV-negative women >50 years of age can acquire HPV and, therefore, require cervical screening
