Magnetodielectric coupling in Mn3O4
We have investigated the dielectric anomalies associated with spin ordering
transitions in the tetragonal spinel MnO, using thermodynamic,
magnetic, and dielectric measurements. We find that two of the three magnetic
ordering transitions in MnO lead to decreases in the temperature
dependent dielectric constant at zero applied field. Applying a magnetic field
to the polycrystalline sample leaves these two dielectric anomalies practically
unchanged, but leads to an increase in the dielectric constant at the
intermediate spin-ordering transition. We discuss possible origins for this
magnetodielectric behavior in terms of spin-phonon coupling. Band structure
calculations suggest that in its ferrimagnetic state, MnO corresponds
to a semiconductor with no orbital degeneracy due to strong Jahn-Teller

Towards practice-based studies of HRM: an actor-network and communities of practice informed approach
HRM may have become co-terminus with the new managerialism in the rhetorical orthodoxies of the HRM textbooks and other platforms for its professional claims. However, we have detailed case-study data showing that HR practices can be much more complicated, nuanced and indeed resistive toward management within organizational settings.
Our study is based on ethnographic research, informed by actor-network theory and community of practice theory conducted by one of the authors over an 18-month period. Using actor-network theory in a descriptive and critical way, we analyse practices of managerial resistance, enrolment and counter-enrolment through which an unofficial network of managers used a formal HRM practice to successfully counteract the official strategy of the firm, which was to close parts of a production site. As a consequence, this network of middle managers effectively changed top management strategy and did so through official HRM practices, coupled with other actor-network building processes, arguably for the ultimate benefit of the organization, though against the initial views of the top management.
The research reported here, may be characterized as a situated study of HRM-in-practice and we draw conclusions which problematize the concept of HRM in contemporary management literature
On-chip electrically controlled routing of photons from a single quantum dot
Electrical control of on-chip routing of photons emitted by a single InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dot (SAQD) is demonstrated in a photonic crystal cavity-waveguide system. The SAQD is located inside an H1 cavity, which is coupled to two photonic crystal waveguides. The SAQD emission wavelength is electrically tunable by the quantum-confined Stark effect. When the SAQD emission is brought into resonance with one of two H1 cavity modes, it is preferentially routed to the waveguide to which that mode is selectively coupled. This proof of concept provides the basis for scalable, low-power, high-speed operation of single-photon routers for use in integrated quantum photonic circuits

Incidence of surgical site infection following mastectomy with and without immediate reconstruction using private insurer claims data
OBJECTIVE: The National Healthcare Safety Network classifies breast operations as clean procedures with an expected 1â2% surgical site infection (SSI) incidence. We assessed differences in SSI incidence following mastectomy with and without immediate reconstruction in a large, geographically diverse population. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. PATIENTS: Commercially-insured women aged 18â64 years with ICD-9-CM procedure or CPT-4 codes for mastectomy from 1/1/2004â12/31/2011. METHODS: Incident SSIs within 180 days after surgery were identified by ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes. The incidence of SSI after mastectomy +/â immediate reconstruction was compared by the chi-square test. RESULTS: From 2004â2011, 18,696 mastectomy procedures among 18,085 women were identified, with immediate reconstruction in 10,836 (58%) procedures. The 180-day incidence of SSI following mastectomy with or without reconstruction was 8.1% (1,520/18,696). Forty-nine percent of SSIs were identified within 30 days post-mastectomy, 24.5% between 31â60 days, 10.5% between 61â90 days, and 15.7% between 91â180 days. The incidence of SSI was 5.0% (395/7,860) after mastectomy-only, 10.3% (848/8,217) after mastectomy plus implant, 10.7% (207/1,942) after mastectomy plus flap, and 10.3% (70/677) after mastectomy plus flap and implant (p<0.001). The SSI risk was higher after bilateral compared with unilateral mastectomy with (11.4% vs. 9.4%, p=0.001) and without (6.1% vs. 4.7%, p=0.021) immediate reconstruction. CONCLUSIONS: SSI incidence was two-fold higher after mastectomy with immediate reconstruction than after mastectomy alone. Only 49% of SSIs were coded within 30 days after operation. Our results suggest stratification by procedure type will facilitate comparison of SSI rates after breast operations between facilities
The critical window for the classical Ramsey-Tur\'an problem
The first application of Szemer\'edi's powerful regularity method was the
following celebrated Ramsey-Tur\'an result proved by Szemer\'edi in 1972: any
K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) has at most (1/8 +
o(1)) N^2 edges. Four years later, Bollob\'as and Erd\H{o}s gave a surprising
geometric construction, utilizing the isoperimetric inequality for the high
dimensional sphere, of a K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number
o(N) and (1/8 - o(1)) N^2 edges. Starting with Bollob\'as and Erd\H{o}s in
1976, several problems have been asked on estimating the minimum possible
independence number in the critical window, when the number of edges is about
N^2 / 8. These problems have received considerable attention and remained one
of the main open problems in this area. In this paper, we give nearly
best-possible bounds, solving the various open problems concerning this

funcX: A Federated Function Serving Fabric for Science
Exploding data volumes and velocities, new computational methods and
platforms, and ubiquitous connectivity demand new approaches to computation in
the sciences. These new approaches must enable computation to be mobile, so
that, for example, it can occur near data, be triggered by events (e.g.,
arrival of new data), be offloaded to specialized accelerators, or run remotely
where resources are available. They also require new design approaches in which
monolithic applications can be decomposed into smaller components, that may in
turn be executed separately and on the most suitable resources. To address
these needs we present funcX---a distributed function as a service (FaaS)
platform that enables flexible, scalable, and high performance remote function
execution. funcX's endpoint software can transform existing clouds, clusters,
and supercomputers into function serving systems, while funcX's cloud-hosted
service provides transparent, secure, and reliable function execution across a
federated ecosystem of endpoints. We motivate the need for funcX with several
scientific case studies, present our prototype design and implementation, show
optimizations that deliver throughput in excess of 1 million functions per
second, and demonstrate, via experiments on two supercomputers, that funcX can

Direct measurement of the 14N(p,g)15O S-factor
We have measured the 14N(p,g)15O excitation function for energies in the
range E_p = 155--524 keV. Fits of these data using R-matrix theory yield a
value for the S-factor at zero energy of 1.64(17) keV b, which is significantly
smaller than the result of a previous direct measurement. The corresponding
reduction in the stellar reaction rate for 14N(p,g)15O has a number of
interesting consequences, including an impact on estimates for the age of the
