    Phylogeographic structure of the pygmy shrew: revisiting the roles of southern and northern refugia in Europe

    Southern and northern glacial refugia are considered paradigms that explain the complex phylogeographic patterns and processes of European biota. Here, we provide a revisited statistical phylogeographic analysis of the pygmy shrew Sorex minutus Linnaeus, 1766 (Eulipotyphla, Soricidae) examining the genetic diversity, genetic differentiation and demographic history in the Mediterranean peninsulas and in Western and Central Europe. The results showed support for genetically distinct and diverse phylogeographic groups consistent with southern and northern glacial refugia, as expected from previous studies, but also identified geographical barriers concordant with glaciated mountain ranges during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), early diversification events dated between the Upper Pleistocene and Lower Holocene for the main phylogeographic groups, and recent (post-LGM) patterns of demographic expansions. This study is the most comprehensive investigation of this species to date, and the results have implications for the conservation of intraspecific diversity and the preservation of the evolutionary potential of S. minutus

    Cluster dynamics of financial centres in the UK: do connected firms grow faster?

    This study investigates the connection between network centrality and firm growth on a sample of 3224 financial services firms located in the UK in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The findings, based on a spatial econometric model of long-term firm growth, indicate that firms that span structural holes, engage in co-management appointments and have network connections to related companies in other financial centres grow faster. In contrast, such connections generate substantial negative indirect effects on proximate firms, leading to a divergence of growth rates between globally connected and locally embedded firms

    Self-consistent Wigner distribution function study of gate-voltage controlled triple-barrier resonant tunnelling diode

    The electron transport through the triple-barrier resonant tunnelling diode (TBRTD) have been studied by the self-consistent numerical method for the Wigner-Poisson problem. The electron flow through the TBRTD can be controlled by the gate voltage applied to one of the potential well regions. For different gate voltage values we have determined the current-voltage characteristics, potential energy profiles, and electron density distribution. We have found the enhancement of the peak-to-valley ratio (up to \sim10), the appearance of the linear current versus bias voltage behaviour within the negative-differential resistance region, and the bistability of the current-voltage characteristics. The analysis of the self-consistent potential energy profiles and electron density distribution allowed us to provide a physical interpretation of these properties.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Renormalized Energies of Superfluorescent Bursts from an Electron-Hole Magneto-plasma with High Gain in InGaAs Quantum Wells

    We study light emission properties of a population-inverted 2D electron-hole plasma in a quantizing magnetic field. We observe a series of superfluorescent bursts, discrete both in time and energy, corresponding to the cooperative recombination of electron-hole pairs from different Landau levels. The emission energies are strongly renormalized due to many-body interactions among the photogenerated carriers, exhibiting red-shifts as large as 20 meV at 15 T. However, the magnetic field dependence of the lowest Landau level emission line remains excitonic at all magnetic fields. Interestingly, our time-resolved measurements show that this lowest-energy burst occurs only after all upper states become empty, suggesting that this excitonic stability is related to the `hidden symmetry' of 2D magneto-excitons expected in the magnetic quantum limit.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Fractal Noise in Quantum Ballistic and Diffusive Lattice Systems

    We demonstrate fractal noise in the quantum evolution of wave packets moving either ballistically or diffusively in periodic and quasiperiodic tight-binding lattices, respectively. For the ballistic case with various initial superpositions we obtain a space-time self-affine fractal Ψ(x,t)\Psi(x,t) which verify the predictions by Berry for "a particle in a box", in addition to quantum revivals. For the diffusive case self-similar fractal evolution is also obtained. These universal fractal features of quantum theory might be useful in the field of quantum information, for creating efficient quantum algorithms, and can possibly be detectable in scattering from nanostructures.Comment: 9 pages, 8 postscript figure

    Numerical and behavioural response of Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus on population growth of the expansive Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans

    Abstract We monitored population size from 1996 to 2003 and studied behavioural interactions (in 2001) between the native Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus and an expansive, opportunistic predator, the Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans, at water reservoirs in Poland. The expansive species caused a population decline in the native species and affected its choice of nest sites. The Black-headed Gulls perceived the risk of predation on the part of the larger Caspian Gulls. When both species occurred in close proximity, the native gull breeding pairs built nests where the vegetation was higher and its cover greater than at the sites chosen by pairs breeding far away from the expansive species. The native gulls in proximity to the expansive species spent more time guarding their nests. However, this was not compensatory, as egg losses were higher and breeding success much lower in pairs breeding near the Caspian Gulls than in those breeding far from the latter. Such a low breeding performance in the Blackheaded Gulls was probably caused either by predation on the part of Caspian Gulls or by aggressive interactions among Black-headed Gulls. In fact, the rate of intraspecific aggression in native gulls was higher in pairs breeding in proximity to the expansive species than in those breeding far away from it. These intraspecific fights, caused by the presence of the expansive species were, at least partially, responsible for egg and chick losses. We did not find the presence of native gulls to have any effect on the behaviour and breeding performance of the expansive gull. These results indicate that the expansive predatory Caspian Gull negatively affects local population size and alters the behaviour of the native Black-headed Gull, and may, both directly and indirectly, affect its reproductive performance.     Classification of integrable Weingarten surfaces possessing an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation

    In this paper we classify Weingarten surfaces integrable in the sense of soliton theory. The criterion is that the associated Gauss equation possesses an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation with a nonremovable parameter. Under certain restrictions on the jet order, the answer is given by a third order ordinary differential equation to govern the functional dependence of the principal curvatures. Employing the scaling and translation (offsetting) symmetry, we give a general solution of the governing equation in terms of elliptic integrals. We show that the instances when the elliptic integrals degenerate to elementary functions were known to nineteenth century geometers. Finally, we characterize the associated normal congruences
