The generic task toolset: High level languages for the construction of planning and problem solving systems
The current generation of languages for the construction of knowledge-based systems as being at too low a level of abstraction is criticized, and the need for higher level languages for building problem solving systems is advanced. A notion of generic information processing tasks in knowledge-based problem solving is introduced. A toolset which can be used to build expert systems in a way that enhances intelligibility and productivity in knowledge acquistion and system construction is described. The power of these ideas is illustrated by paying special attention to a high level language called DSPL. A description is given of how it was used in the construction of a system called MPA, which assists with planning in the domain of offensive counter air missions

EBF1-deficient bone marrow stroma elicits persistent changes in HSC potential
Crosstalk between mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) and hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is essential for hematopoietic homeostasis and lineage output. Here, we investigate how transcriptional changes in bone marrow (BM) MSCs result in long-lasting effects on HSCs. Single-cell analysis of Cxcl12-abundant reticular (CAR) cells and PDGFRα+Sca1+ (PαS) cells revealed an extensive cellular heterogeneity but uniform expression of the transcription factor gene Ebf1. Conditional deletion of Ebf1 in these MSCs altered their cellular composition, chromatin structure and gene expression profiles, including the reduced expression of adhesion-related genes. Functionally, the stromal-specific Ebf1 inactivation results in impaired adhesion of HSCs, leading to reduced quiescence and diminished myeloid output. Most notably, HSCs residing in the Ebf1-deficient niche underwent changes in their cellular composition and chromatin structure that persist in serial transplantations. Thus, genetic alterations in the BM niche lead to long-term functional changes of HSCs
Electromagnetics from a quasistatic perspective
Quasistatics is introduced so that it fits smoothly into the standard
textbook presentation of electrodynamics. The usual path from statics to
general electrodynamics is rather short and surprisingly simple. A closer look
reveals however that it is not without confusing issues as has been illustrated
by many contributions to this Journal. Quasistatic theory is conceptually
useful by providing an intermediate level in between statics and the full set
of Maxwell's equations. Quasistatics is easier than general electrodynamics and
in some ways more similar to statics. It is however, in terms of interesting
physics and important applications, far richer than statics. Quasistatics is
much used in electromagnetic modeling, an activity that today is possible on a
PC and which also has great pedagogical potential. The use of electromagnetic
simulations in teaching gives additional support for the importance of
quasistatics. This activity may also motivate some change of focus in the
presentation of basic electrodynamics
Cloud and ice in the planetary scale circulation and in climate
The roles of the cryosphere, and of cloud-radiative interactions are investigated. The effects clouds and ice have in the climate system are examined. The cloud radiation research attempts explain the modes of interaction (feedback) between raditive transfer, cloud formation, and atmospheric dynamics. The role of sea ice in weather and climate is also discussed. Models are used to describe the ice and atmospheric dynamics under study
Methodology of the biological risk classification of animal pathogens in Belgium
The biological hazards posed by micro-organisms have lead to their categorisation into risk groups and the elaboration of classification lists. Current classification systems rely on criteria defined by the World Health Organization, which cover the severity of the disease the micro-organism might cause, its ability to spread and the availability of prophylaxis or efficient treatment. Animal pathogens are classified according to the definitions of the World Organization of Animal Health, which also consider economic aspects of disease. In Europe, classification is often directly linked to containment measures. The Belgian classification system however, only considers the inherent characteristics of the micro-organism, not its use, making the risk classification independent of containment measures. A common classification list for human and animal pathogens has been developed in Belgium using as comprehensive an approach as possible. Evolution of scientific knowledge will demand regular updating of classification lists. This paper describes the Belgian risk classification system and the methodology that was used for its peer-reviewed revision (with a focus on animal pathogens)
Induction of Plant Defense Gene Expression by Plant Activators and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato in Greenhouse-Grown Tomatoes
Plant activators provide an appealing management option for bacterial diseases of greenhouse-grown tomatoes. Two types of plant activators, one that induces systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and a second that activates induced systemic resistance (ISR), were evaluated for control of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato and effect on plant defense gene activation. Benzothiadiazole (BTH, SAR-inducing compound) effectively reduced bacterial speck incidence and severity, both alone and in combination with the ISR-inducing product. Application of BTH also led to elevated activation of salicylic acid and ethylene-mediated responses, based on real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of marker gene expression levels. In contrast, the ISR-inducing product (made up of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) inconsistently modified defense gene expression and did not provide disease control to the same level as did BTH. No antagonism was observed by combining the two activators as control of bacterial speck was similar to or better than BTH alone
Removing black-hole singularities with nonlinear electrodynamics
We propose a way to remove black hole singularities by using a particular
nonlinear electrodynamics Lagrangian that has been recently used in various
astrophysics and cosmological frameworks. In particular, we adapt the
cosmological analysis discussed in a previous work to the black hole physics.
Such analysis will be improved by applying the Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation to
the black hole case. At the end, fixed the radius of the star, the final
density depends only on the introduced quintessential density term

Comparison between two methods of solution of coupled equations for low-energy scattering
Cross sections from low-energy neutron-nucleus scattering have been evaluated
using a coupled channel theory of scattering. Both a coordinate-space and a
momentum-space formalism of that coupled-channel theory are considered.A simple
rotational model of the channel interaction potentials is used to find results
using two relevant codes, ECIS97 and MCAS, so that they may be compared. The
very same model is then used in the MCAS approach to quantify the changes that
