    Correlations of record events as a test for heavy-tailed distributions

    A record is an entry in a time series that is larger or smaller than all previous entries. If the time series consists of independent, identically distributed random variables with a superimposed linear trend, record events are positively (negatively) correlated when the tail of the distribution is heavier (lighter) than exponential. Here we use these correlations to detect heavy-tailed behavior in small sets of independent random variables. The method consists of converting random subsets of the data into time series with a tunable linear drift and computing the resulting record correlations.Comment: Revised version, to appear in Physical Review Letter

    Extreme fluctuations in noisy task-completion landscapes on scale-free networks

    We study the statistics and scaling of extreme fluctuations in noisy task-completion landscapes, such as those emerging in synchronized distributed-computing networks, or generic causally-constrained queuing networks, with scale-free topology. In these networks the average size of the fluctuations becomes finite (synchronized state) and the extreme fluctuations typically diverge only logarithmically in the large system-size limit ensuring synchronization in a practical sense. Provided that local fluctuations in the network are short-tailed, the statistics of the extremes are governed by the Gumbel distribution.     Extreme value statistics and return intervals in long-range correlated uniform deviates

    We study extremal statistics and return intervals in stationary long-range correlated sequences for which the underlying probability density function is bounded and uniform. The extremal statistics we consider e.g., maximum relative to minimum are such that the reference point from which the maximum is measured is itself a random quantity. We analytically calculate the limiting distributions for independent and identically distributed random variables, and use these as a reference point for correlated cases. The distributions are different from that of the maximum itself i.e., a Weibull distribution, reflecting the fact that the distribution of the reference point either dominates over or convolves with the distribution of the maximum. The functional form of the limiting distributions is unaffected by correlations, although the convergence is slower. We show that our findings can be directly generalized to a wide class of stochastic processes. We also analyze return interval distributions, and compare them to recent conjectures of their functional form

    The Algebras of Large N Matrix Mechanics

    Extending early work, we formulate the large N matrix mechanics of general bosonic, fermionic and supersymmetric matrix models, including Matrix theory: The Hamiltonian framework of large N matrix mechanics provides a natural setting in which to study the algebras of the large N limit, including (reduced) Lie algebras, (reduced) supersymmetry algebras and free algebras. We find in particular a broad array of new free algebras which we call symmetric Cuntz algebras, interacting symmetric Cuntz algebras, symmetric Bose/Fermi/Cuntz algebras and symmetric Cuntz superalgebras, and we discuss the role of these algebras in solving the large N theory. Most important, the interacting Cuntz algebras are associated to a set of new (hidden) local quantities which are generically conserved only at large N. A number of other new large N phenomena are also observed, including the intrinsic nonlocality of the (reduced) trace class operators of the theory and a closely related large N field identification phenomenon which is associated to another set (this time nonlocal) of new conserved quantities at large N.Comment: 70 pages, expanded historical remark

    Het aantal gestrande bruinvissen langs de Nederlandse kust is de laatste jaren sterk toegenomen. Het grootste aantal strandingen vond plaats in 2006: 546 geregistreerde dieren, waarvan naar schatting 7 - 70% stierven als gevolg van verdrinking. Intensieve studies elders en anekdotische informatie, beschikbaar voor Nederland, wijzen erop dat bruinvissen onder andere verstrikt raken in staandwantnetten. Er is echter grote variatie in de plaats en tijd dat de verschillende varianten staandwant worden ingezet. Het doel van dit vergelijkend onderzoek is om een beter beeld te krijgen van ruimtelijke en tijdelijke variatie in bruinvisstrandingen, en hoe dit samenhangt met veranderingen in het aantal bruinvissen waargenomen voor de kust en de inzet van staandwan
