Chloroform Anesthesia in the Castration of Boars

    Get PDF
The office of the ambulatory clinicians of the veterinary clinic at Iowa State College received a call on Jan. 21, 1950, from the college swine herdsman concerning the castration of five mature herd boars. The following equipment was prepared:1. Large, flat, stainless steel pan 2. Bard-Parker handle and hooked blades 3. Emasculator 4. Hard twist manila rope, 1/2 in. x 12 ft. 5. Large turkish towel 6. Chloroform, three 1/4 lb. bottle

    Veterinary Ethics

A veterinarian must live. He must feed, clothe and shelter himself. He alone bears the economic responsibility of his dependents. But at the same time his duty is to the community and the people with whom he lives. It is for him to render service in such a manner as to add to the professional status and the dignity of his calling. Often these two factors are divergent, if not actually opposed. The choice was, is, and shall be made many times by many veterinarians. If each veterinarian carries with him an inherent sense of ethics, the profession, and so the individual, shall benefit

The feeding response of copepods from the Peru upwelling system: Food size selection

Two cruises to the Peru upwelling in 1976 and 1977 provided the opportunity to examine the feeding response of Centropages brachiatus, Calanus chilensis, and Eucalanus inermis. The shipboard experiments with naturally occurring particulate matter were designed to test two hypotheses: 1) that food size selectivity by a copepod is a function of overall food concentration, and 2) that a copepod varies the range of food sizes ingested as a function of food concentration and available food size...

Update on the management of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children and adults: patient considerations and the role of lisdexamfetamine

    Get PDF
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder characterized by atypical levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that impair daily living activities. Although commonly associated with children and adolescents, current literature and practice now demonstrate the impairment the disorder may impose on adults as well. Central nervous system (CNS) stimulant medications are the first-line therapy for ADHD. CNS stimulants include methylphenidate and amphetamine derivatives. Longer-acting formulations used once daily are often preferred to avoid medication administration during school or work as well as to avoid side effects associated with rapid fluctuations in serum concentrations associated with multiple daily dosing. Lisdexamfetamine, a new, novel amphetamine product, has been shown to provide efficacy upwards of 12 hours in children and adults with a side effect profile similar to those of other longer-acting amphetamine products. Owing to its unique prodrug composition and the need for oral administration to activate the medication, lisdexamfetamine may offer advantages in clinical situations where stimulant abuse is a concern

A four year old male Collie dog was admitted to Stange Memorial Clinic on Feb. 18, 1950. The dog had been referred to the clinic by a practitioner who had made a diagnosis of osteomyelitis. The history accompanying the patient was essentially as follows

Unified Geostatistical Modeling for Data Fusion and Spatial Heteroskedasticity with R Package ramps

    Get PDF
This article illustrates usage of the ramps R package, which implements the reparameterized and marginalized posterior sampling (RAMPS) algorithm for complex Bayesian geostatistical models. The RAMPS methodology allows joint modeling of areal and point-source data arising from the same underlying spatial process. A reparametrization of variance parameters facilitates slice sampling based on simplexes, which can be useful in general when multiple variances are present. Prediction at arbitrary points can be made, which is critical in applications where maps are needed. Our implementation takes advantage of sparse matrix operations in the Matrix package and can provide substantial savings in computing time for large datasets. A user-friendly interface, similar to the nlme mixed effects models package, enables users to analyze datasets with little programming effort. Support is provided for numerous spatial and spatiotemporal correlation structures, user-defined correlation structures, and non-spatial random effects. The package features are illustrated via a synthetic dataset of spatially correlated observation distributed across the state of Iowa, USA.

Approximate method for predicting the permanent set in a beam in vacuo and in water subject to a shock wave

    Get PDF
An approximate method to compute the maximum deformation and permanent set of a beam subjected to shock wave laoding in vacuo and in water was investigated. The method equates the maximum kinetic energy of the beam (and water) to the elastic plastic work done by a static uniform load applied to a beam. Results for the water case indicate that the plastic deformation is controlled by the kinetic energy of the water. The simplified approach can result in significant savings in computer time or it can expediently be used as a check of results from a more rigorous approach. The accuracy of the method is demonstrated by various examples of beams with simple support and clamped support boundary conditions

Efficiency test of a General Electric Co. variable speed Form M induction motor

Citation: Cheney, James Hamilton. Uranalysis as a means of diagnosis in veterinary diseases. Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1907.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: At the present day the high cost of copper makes it imperative that the line construction for the transmission of power should be such as to require a minimum amount of copper. This condition is obtained by raising the voltage at which the power is transmitted. Since alternating current is the most adaptable for this work, it is being used more and more. For this reason alternating current motors have become one of the largest problems in the electrical industry. There are at the present time two general classes of alternating current motors, the synchronous motor and the induction motor. The synchronous motor does very well in sub-stations and power houses where it may be readily started. It gives a constant speed and by its use the power factor of a line may be improved, but the disadvantages due to requirements of an exciter and a means of starting, prohibit its installation in small units or in isolated places

See Supplementary information.txt for information regarding how access and use the files in WHOI-89-24-data.zipNet tows were collected with a Multiple Opening/Closing Net Environmental Sampling System (MOCNESS) carrying twenty 1-m2 nets in October 1982 in and near warm-core ring 82-H in the North Atlantic (RV/Knorr cruise 98). This report includes the species list and abundance tables of the copepods found in five of the tows. There are four types of abundance tables: raw data, standardized to #/1000 m3 , integrated #/m2 to 1000 m depth, and cumulative percents over the depth of the tows.Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation through grant Number OCE 80-12748, OCE 85-08350, OCE 87-09962, OCE 80-19055, and OCE 80-17271
