    Processing of pine (Pinus sylvestris) and birch (Betula pubescens) leaf material in a small river system in the northern Cairngorms, Scotland

    International audienceProcessing rates, and macroinvertebrate colonisation, of pine needles and birch leaves were studied at eight sites on the river Nethy, a small river system in the Cairngorm region of north-eastern Scotland. Throughout this river system, processing rates were slow for pine (k values 0.0015-0.0034 day-1) and medium to fast for birch (k values 0.0085-0.0331 day-1). Plecopteran shredders dominated both pine and birch leaf packs during the early part of the experiment while chironomids were more important in the latter stages. It is suggested that the slow processing rate of pine needles could adversely affect the productivity of streams, particularly where needles provide the major allochthonous energy source and retentive features are limited. Forest managers should consider this when creating new pinewoods in treeless areas as it will take many years for the trees to reach a size at which they can effectively contribute retentive features, in the form of woody debris, to streams.     Self-organized global control of carbon emissions

    There is much disagreement concerning how best to control global carbon emissions. We explore quantitatively how different control schemes affect the collective emission dynamics of a population of emitting entities. We uncover a complex trade-off which arises between average emissions (affecting the global climate), peak pollution levels (affecting citizens' everyday health), industrial efficiency (affecting the nation's economy), frequency of institutional intervention (affecting governmental costs), common information (affecting trading behavior) and market volatility (affecting financial stability). Our findings predict that a self-organized free-market approach at the level of a sector, state, country or continent, can provide better control than a top-down regulated scheme in terms of market volatility and monthly pollution peaks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Simplification of Caribbean Reef-Fish Assemblages over Decades of Coral Reef Degradation

    Caribbean coral reefs are becoming structurally simpler, largely due to human impacts. The consequences of this trend for reef-associated communities are currently unclear, but expected to be profound. Here, we assess whether changes in fish assemblages have been non-random over several decades of declining reef structure. More specifically, we predicted that species that depend exclusively on coral reef habitat (i.e., habitat specialists) should be at a disadvantage compared to those that use a broader array of habitats (i.e., habitat generalists). Analysing 3727 abundance trends of 161 Caribbean reef-fishes, surveyed between 1980 and 2006, we found that the trends of habitat-generalists and habitat-specialists differed markedly. The abundance of specialists started to decline in the mid-1980s, reaching a low of ~60% of the 1980 baseline by the mid-1990s. Both the average and the variation in abundance of specialists have increased since the early 2000s, although the average is still well below the baseline level of 1980. This modest recovery occurred despite no clear evidence of a regional recovery in coral reef habitat quality in the Caribbean during the 2000s. In contrast, the abundance of generalist fishes remained relatively stable over the same three decades. Few specialist species are fished, thus their population declines are most likely linked to habitat degradation. These results mirror the observed trends of replacement of specialists by generalists, observed in terrestrial taxa across the globe. A significant challenge that arises from our findings is now to investigate if, and how, such community-level changes in fish populations affect ecosystem function

    Reverse-correlating mental representations of sex-typed bodies: the effect of number of trials on image quality

    Sex categorization is a critical process in social perception. While psychologists have long theorized that perceivers have distinct mental representations of men and women that help them to achieve efficient sex categorizations, researchers have only recently begun using reverse-correlation to visualize the content of these mental representations. The present research addresses two issues concerning this relatively new methodological tool. First, previous studies of reverse-correlation have focused almost exclusively on perceivers' mental representations of faces. Our study demonstrates that this technique can also be used to visualize mental representations of sex-typed bodies. Second, most studies of reverse-correlation have employed a relatively large number of trials (1000+) to capture perceivers' mental representations of a given category. Our study demonstrated that, at least for sex-typed representations of bodies, high quality reverse-correlation images can be obtained with as few as 100 trials. Overall, our findings enhance knowledge of reverse-correlation methodology in general and sex categorization in particular, providing new information for researchers interested in using this technique to understand the complex processes underlying social perception

    The use of opportunistic data for IUCN Red List assessments

    IUCN Red Lists are recognized worldwide as powerful instruments for the conservation of species. Quantitative criteria to standardize approaches for estimating population trends, geographic ranges and population sizes have been developed at global and sub-global levels. Little attention has been given to the data needed to estimate species trends and range sizes for IUCN Red List assessments. Few regions collect monitoring data in a structured way and usually only for a limited number of taxa. Therefore, opportunistic data are increasingly used for estimating trends and geographic range sizes. Trend calculations use a range of proxies: (i) monitoring sentinel populations, (ii) estimating changes in available habitat, or (iii) statistical models of change based on opportunistic records. Geographic ranges have been determined using: (i) marginal occurrences, (ii) habitat distributions, (iii) range-wide occurrences, (iv) species distribution modelling (including site-occupancy models), and (v) process-based modelling. Red List assessments differ strongly among regions (Europe, Britain and Flanders, north Belgium). Across different taxonomic groups, in European Red Lists IUCN criteria B and D resulted in the highest level of threat. In Britain, this was the case for criterion D and criterion A, while in Flanders criterion B and criterion A resulted in the highest threat level. Among taxonomic groups, however, large differences in the use of IUCN criteria were revealed. We give examples from Europe, Britain and Flemish Red List assessments using opportunistic data and give recommendations for a more uniform use of IUCN criteria among regions and among taxonomic groups

    OC 8510 BIOTRANSFORMATION OF PRAZIQUANTEL FOR THE PHARMACOKINETIC OPTIMISATION OF PRAZIQUANTEL USE IN MASS DRUG ADMINISTRATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PAEDIATRIC FORMULATIONS

    BackgroundPraziquantel (PZQ) is the only drug available for the treatment of all forms of schistosomiasis. New paediatric formulations for the active enantiomer R-PZQ and the racemate PZQ are currently under development. There is however limited drug metabolism and pharmacokinetic data on PZQ available to support these initiatives. Detailed knowledge of PZQ metabolism will enable the use of PBPK modelling to determine appropriate doses for the new formulations in paediatric patients and to predict risks for drug-drug interactions in mass drug administration.MethodsBiotransformation studies on PZQ were conducted in human liver microsomes and recombinant Cytochrome P450s (CYPs). Structure elucidation was inferred from mass spectra. Enzyme kinetic studies to determine the Michaelis-Menten kinetics, Km and Vmax, of the formation of the main metabolites and analysis of clinical samples were determined by LC-MS/MS.ResultsCYP reaction phenotyping studies with HLM and r-CYPs indicate major involvement of CYP1A2, 2 C19, 2D6 and 3A4/5 in the metabolism of R- and S-PZQ. Biotransformation studies showed that PZQ is metabolised to cis-4-OH-PZQ mainly by CYP1A2 and CYP2C19. CYP3A4/5 metabolises PZQ to a mono-hydroxyl metabolite (X-OH-PZQ) whilst CYP2D6 metabolises PZQ to minor novel mono-hydroxyl metabolite (Y-OH-PZQ) both pending structural elucidation by nuclear magnetic resonance. R-PZQ was more rapidly cleared than S–PZQ with variable interindividual AUC and Cmax.Discussion and conclusionThe differential role of CYP1A2 and CYP2C19 and of CYP3A4 and CYP3A5 in the formation the 4-OH-PZQ and the novel X-OH-PZQ respectively are intriguing findings as this has not been reported before in humans. In vitro, cis and not trans 4-OH-PZQ formation has been observed contrary in vivo reports in humans which indicate trans 4-OH-PZQ as the main metabolite. The data will enable us to understand the rapid clearance of PZQ and predict potential drug-drug-gene interactions which mayexplain the inter-individual variability of PZQ pharmacokinetics

    Longitudinal Patterns of Mexican and Puerto Rican Children’s Asthma Controller Medication Adherence and Acute Healthcare Utilization

    Rationale: Researchers tend to study Latinos as a single group but recent asthma research confirmed differences among Latino subgroups. Variations in controller medication adherence may be a factor in the observed health disparities between Mexican and Puerto Rican children. Adherence is not a stable phenomenon, however, there is a paucity of data on patterns of adherence, sociodemographic predictors of patterns, and variations in asthma-related acute healthcare utilization by adherence pattern among Latino sub-groups. Objectives: Identify patterns of inhaled corticosteroid medication adherence over twelve months among Mexican and Puerto Rican children with persistent asthma; examine sociodemographic predictors of adherence patterns by ethnicity; and investigate asthma-related acute healthcare utilization based on these patterns. Methods: We analyzed controller medication Doser data from Mexican and Puerto Rican children (n=123; ages 5-12 years) with persistent asthma who participated with their caregivers in a longitudinal, non-intervention study (Phoenix, AZ and Bronx, NY). Interview and medical record data were collected at enrollment, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months post-enrollment. Results: 47%-53% of children had poor adherence ( Conclusions: This study demonstrated that unique ethnicity within Latino populations may be associated with different risk levels for suboptimal controller medication adherence which may be a factor in the observed asthma health disparities between Mexican and Puerto Rican children. Increased understanding of and attention to children’s controller medication adherence patterns will provide evidence needed to identify children at highest risk for acute healthcare utilization and offer more intensive intervention using less-intensive approaches for those at low risk

    Laser enhanced high-intensity focused ultrasound thrombolysis: An in vitro study

Copyright, Ecological Society of America.Laser-enhanced thrombolysis by high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment was studied in vitro with bovine blood clots. To achieve laser-enhanced thrombolysis, laser light was employed to illuminate the sample concurrently with HIFU radiation, and ultrasound and laser parameters were optimized to achieve better thrombolysis efficiency. The results indicated that the thrombolysis efficiency increased when pulse length of HIFU wave, HIFU pressure, or laser fluence increases.
