    New records and range extension of some mosses in tropical areas of Chile

    A total of thirteen mosses are reported as new for Chile: Aloinella andina Delgad., Coscinodontella bryanii R.S. Williams, Didymodon acutus (Brid.) K. Saito, Erythrophyllopsis fuscula (Müll. Hal.) Hilp., Fissidens excurrentinervis R.S. Williams, Grimmia molesta J. Muñoz, Grimmia pseudoanodon Deguchi, Jaffueliobryum williamsii (Deguchi) Delgad., Leptopteriginandrum austroalpinum Müll. Hal., Pseudocrossidium elatum (R.S. Williams) Delgad., Rhexophyllum subnigrum (Mitt.) Hilp., Saitobryum lorentzii (Müll. Hal.) Ochyra, and Syntrichia fragilis (Taylor) Ochyra. In addition, Grimmia plagiopodia Hedw., which was previosly known from Southern Chile, is reported ca. 3500 km more to the north, near the Bolivian border

    Quark correlations and gluon propagators in elastic vector meson production

    We study the behavior of the differential cross section for vector meson photoproduction at large momentum transfer in the two-gluon exchange model. We focus on the treatment of two-quark correlation function in the proton and on gluon propagators with a dynamically generated mass.     Real and Virtual Compton Scattering in a Regge Approach

    We study Real and Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering in a model based on Regge trajectories and two-gluon exchange. In the kinematic regime of current experiments, the hadronic component of the outgoing real photon plays a major role. We analyze the spin structure of Compton scattering at large momentum transfer and give predictions for several spin asymmetries.     Properties of five toughened matrix composite materials

    The use of toughened matrix composite materials offers an attractive solution to the problem of poor damage tolerance associated with advanced composite materials. In this study, the unidirectional laminate strengths and moduli, notched (open-hole) and unnotched tension and compression properties of quasi-isotropic laminates, and compression-after-impact strengths of five carbon fiber/toughened matrix composites, IM7/E7T1-2, IM7/X1845, G40-800X/5255-3, IM7/5255-3, and IM7/5260 have been evaluated. The compression-after-impact (CAI) strengths were determined primarily by impacting quasi-isotropic laminates with the NASA Langley air gun. A few CAI tests were also made with a drop-weight impactor. For a given impact energy, compression after impact strengths were determined to be dependent on impactor velocity. Properties and strengths for the five materials tested are compared with NASA data on other toughened matrix materials (IM7/8551-7, IM6/1808I, IM7/F655, and T800/F3900). This investigation found that all five materials were stronger and more impact damage tolerant than more brittle carbon/epoxy composite materials currently used in aircraft structures

    Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the local density of states

    The scattering of electrons with inhomogeneities produces modulations in the local density of states of a metal. We show that electron interference contributions to these modulations are affected by the magnetic field via the Aharonov-Bohm effect. This can be exploited in a simple STM setup that serves as an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer at the nanometer scale.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. v2 added reference

    Quasi-normal mode analysis in BEC acoustic black holes

    We perform a quasi-normal mode analysis of black hole configurations in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). In this analysis we use the full Bogoliubov dispersion relation, not just the hydrodynamic or geometric approximation. We restrict our attention to one-dimensional flows in BEC with step-like discontinuities. For this case we show that in the hydrodynamic approximation quasi-normal modes do not exist. The full dispersion relation, however, allows the existence of quasi-normal modes. Remarkably, the spectrum of these modes is not discrete but continuous.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Community structures and role detection in music networks

    We analyze the existence of community structures in two different social networks obtained from similarity and collaborative features between musical artists. Our analysis reveals some characteristic organizational patterns and provides information about the driving forces behind the growth of the networks. In the similarity network, we find a strong correlation between clusters of artists and musical genres. On the other hand, the collaboration network shows two different kinds of communities: rather small structures related to music bands and geographic zones, and much bigger communities built upon collaborative clusters with a high number of participants related through the period the artists were active. Finally, we detect the leading artists inside their corresponding communities and analyze their roles in the network by looking at a few topological properties of the nodes.Comment: 14 pages 7 figure

    Satisfaction and quality of life in women who undergo breast surgery: a qualitative study to develop conceptual model

    Background: In cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery, measurement of patient-reported outcomes has become increasingly important to research efforts and clinical care. We aimed to describe how breast conditions and breast surgery impact on patient satisfaction and quality of life. Methods: We conducted qualitative, in-depth interviews with 48 women who had undergone either breast reduction (n = 15), breast augmentation (n = 12), or breast reconstruction (n = 21) surgery in order to begin to build a theoretical understanding of patient satisfaction and quality of life in breast surgery patients. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. Results: The patient interviews revealed that breast conditions and breast surgery impact women in the following six main areas: satisfaction with breasts; satisfaction with overall outcome; psychosocial well-being; sexual well-being; physical well-being; and satisfaction with the process of care. We used these six themes to form the basis of a conceptual framework of patient satisfaction and quality of life in women who undergo breast surgery. Conclusion: Our conceptual framework establishes the main issues of concern for breast surgery patients. This new framework can be used to help develop local guidelines for future clinical assessment, management and measurement, establish the validity of the current management strategies, and develop evidence-based guidance for the development of new patient reported outcome measures for future outcomes research
