Extraction and characterization of lignins from cashew apple bagasse obtained by different treatments

    Get PDF
Lignins were extracted from different hydrolysates from the cashew apple bagasse (CAB). The hydrolysates, in turn, were obtained by pretreating the CAB with diluted acid (DA), acid/alkali (AA) and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP). Lignin removal levels with AA and AHP were of 98.0% and 96.9%, resulting in high extraction yields and highly thermostable lignins. The lowest lignin yield was observed with the acid-only pretreatment. The FT-IR results showed that there was no significant difference between the main structures of the lignin isolated from the DA and AHP pretreatments, when compared to sugarcane lignin (SCL), the only exception being the lignin from AA. An 1H–13C HSQC NMR analysis demonstrated that AA pretreatment reduced the syringyl (S) and hydroxyphenyl (H) units, but increased the condensed guaiacyl (G) units, which may contribute to the higher thermal stability of the isolated lignins and to the absence of attached residues of carbohydrates. The detailed structural properties of the lignins extracted from CAB will enable the efficient utilization of these macromolecules within the biorefinery concept, with a positive impact on the economy

Economic History and History of Economics: Complementary Approaches to Portuguese Economic Development

    Get PDF
This chapter focuses on how the problems of economic development were addressed by the Portuguese historiography of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The ensuing discussion benefits from the simultaneous consideration of two historiographical domains that complement each other: economic history and the history of economics. On the one hand, there are the authors and texts of economic history that seek to describe the facts and circumstances related to the functioning and dynamics of economic reality, for a given period or succession of periods, in order to establish evolutionary trends. On the other hand, there are the authors and texts of the history of economics that seek to adopt analytical forms (principles and laws) and doctrinal and programmatic frameworks (visions and ideologies) aimed at providing explanatory meaning to the observed economic changes, phenomena and regularities. A true understanding of the important issues pertaining to Portuguese economic development is to be found, however, in the intersection of these distinct but complementary historiographical perspectives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Fermentation dynamics, nutritional quality, and heating capacity of mixed silages of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) and Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala).

Leucaena has been used to make mixed silages to obtain nutritional enrichment of the silages. Thus, the inclusion of Leucaena as an additive in mixed elephant grass silages can reduce fermentation losses, and increase the nutritional value and aerobic stability of the mixed silage without changing the fermentation profile. This study evaluated the fermentation profile, nutritional composition, and aerobic stability of elephant grass silages combined with different levels of Leucaena. A total of five inclusion levels of Leucaena (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80% on a dry matter basis) were added to elephant grass silages. A completely randomized design was adopted, with 5 treatments and 3 repetitions, totaling 15 experimental silos that were opened after 30 days of sealing. Fermentation profile, chemical composition, and aerobic stability were analyzed. A descriptive analysis of temperature and pH peaks during aerobic stability was performed. The increase in the inclusion of Leucaena in the composition of silages reduced gas and effluent losses, neutral and acid detergent fiber, cellulose, lignin, total and fiber carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients, and resulted in increased dry matter, ether extract, and crude protein. A quadratic effect of treatments was found for the temperature to reach the maximum pH (P=0.009). Aerobic stability remained constant after 40% Leucaena inclusion in the composition of elephant grass silages. The inclusion of Leucaena up to 80% in the composition of elephant grass silages reduces fermentation losses, promotes a nutritional increase, and increases the aerobic stability of the silages
