Research reports: The 1980 NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program
The Summer Faculty Fellowship Research Program objectives are: to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants and institutions; and to contribute to the research objectives at the NASA centers. A NASA/ASEE Summer Faulty Fellowship Program was conducted at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The basic objectives of the programs are: (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of the participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA Centers. The Faculty Fellows spent ten weeks at MSFC engaged in a research project compatible with their interests and background and worked in collaboration with a NASA/MSFC colleague. This document is a compilation of Fellows' reports on their research during the summer of 1984. Statistics of normal mode amplitudes in an ocean with random sound-speed perturbations : cross-mode coherence and mean intensity

Am. 99, 2825–2838] transport equation for the mode amplitude coherence matrix resulting from coupled mode propagation through random fields of internal waves is examined in more detail. It is shown that the mode energy equations are approximately independent of the cross mode coherences, and that cross mode coherences and mode energy can evolve over very similar range scales. The decay of cross mode coherence depends on the relative mode phase randomization caused by coupling and adiabatic effects, each of which can be quantified by the theory. This behavior has a dramatic effect on the acoustic field second moments like mean intensity. Comparing estimates of the coherence matrix and mean intensity from Monte Carlo simulation, and the transport equations, good agreement is demonstrated for a 100-Hz deep-water example.This work was supported by the Office of Naval Research

Polydisperse star polymer solutions
We analyze the effect of polydispersity in the arm number on the effective
interactions, structural correlations and the phase behavior of star polymers
in a good solvent. The effective interaction potential between two star
polymers with different arm numbers is derived using scaling theory. The
resulting expression is tested against monomer-resolved molecular dynamics
simulations. We find that the theoretical pair potential is in agreement with
the simulation data in a much wider polydispersity range than other proposed
potentials. We then use this pair potential as an input in a many-body theory
to investigate polydispersity effects on the structural correlations and the
phase diagram of dense star polymer solutions. In particular we find that a
polydispersity of 10%, which is typical in experimental samples, does not
significantly alter previous findings for the phase diagram of monodisperse

The definitive version is available from the link below.In the past five years there has been a dramatic increase in work on Search-Based Software Engineering (SBSE), an approach to Software Engineering (SE) in which Search-Based Optimization (SBO) algorithms are used to address problems in SE. SBSE has been applied to problems throughout the SE lifecycle, from requirements and project planning to maintenance and reengineering. The approach is attractive because it offers a suite of adaptive automated and semiautomated solutions in situations typified by large complex problem spaces with multiple competing and conflicting objectives.
This article provides a review and classification of literature on SBSE. The work identifies research trends and relationships between the techniques applied and the applications to which they have been applied and highlights gaps in the literature and avenues for further research.EPSRC and E
