The Effect of Variability on the Estimation of Quasar Black Hole Masses
We investigate the time-dependent variations of ultraviolet (UV) black hole
mass estimates of quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). From SDSS
spectra of 615 high-redshift (1.69 < z < 4.75) quasars with spectra from two
epochs, we estimate black hole masses, using a single-epoch technique which
employs an additional, automated night-sky-line removal, and relies on UV
continuum luminosity and CIV (1549A) emission line dispersion. Mass estimates
show variations between epochs at about the 30% level for the sample as a
whole. We determine that, for our full sample, measurement error in the line
dispersion likely plays a larger role than the inherent variability, in terms
of contributing to variations in mass estimates between epochs. However, we use
the variations in quasars with r-band spectral signal-to-noise ratio greater
than 15 to estimate that the contribution to these variations from inherent
variability is roughly 20%. We conclude that these differences in black hole
mass estimates between epochs indicate variability is not a large contributer
to the current factor of two scatter between mass estimates derived from low-

Spectral Variability of Quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. II: The C IV Line
We examine the variability of the high-ionizaton C IV line in a sample of 105
quasars observed at multiple epochs by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find a
strong correlation between the change in the C IV line flux and the change in
the line width, but no correlations between the change in flux and changes in
line center and skewness. The relation between line flux change and line width
change is consistent with a model in which a broad line base varies with
greater amplitude than the line core. The objects studied here are more
luminous and at higher redshift than those normally studied for variability,
ranging in redshift from 1.65 to 4.00 and in absolute r-band magnitude from
roughly -24 to -28. Using moment analysis line-fitting techniques, we measure
line fluxes, centers, widths and skewnesses for the C IV line at two epochs for
each object. The well-known Baldwin Effect is seen for these objects, with a
slope beta = -0.22. The sample has a median intrinsic Baldwin Effect slope of
beta = -0.85; the C IV lines in these high-luminosity quasars appear to be less
responsive to continuum variations than those in lower luminosity AGN.
Additionally, we find no evidence for variability of the well known blueshift
of the C IV line with respect to the low-ionization Mg II line in the highest
flux objects, indicating that this blueshift might be useful as a measure of

Legalized Abortion and the Homicide of Young Children: An Empirical Investigation
Recent research has drawn a link, sometimes a causal link, between the legalization of abortion in the late 1960s and early 1970s and the precipitous decline in crime in the 1990s. Abortion is posited to have reduced the number of potential victims and potential perpetrators, and the potential effect is examined when these individuals would be reaching their high-crime years. We examined a more proximal potential association between legalized abortion and homicide, specifically, the homicide of young children. Assuming that abortions occurred when the family had insufficient resources for the birth, one could hypothesize that children would have been at higher risk of homicide if born into these circumstances. We examined 1960-1998 U.S. mortality data for children under 5 years of age using an interrupted time series design. The legalization of abortion was not associated with a sudden change in child homicide trends. It was, however, associated with a steady decrease in the homicides of toddlers (i.e., 1- to 4-year-olds) in subsequent years. Although in the predicted direction, the decrease in homicides of children under 1 year of age was not statistically significant. Competing explanations that could be examined in the data (e.g., changes in mortality classification) do not account for the findings
X-ray Insights Into Interpreting CIV Blueshifts and Optical/UV Continua
We present 0.5-8.0 keV Chandra observations of six bright quasars that
represent extrema in quasar emission-line properties -- three quasars each with
small and large blueshifts of the CIV emission line with respect to the
systemic redshift of the quasars. Supplemented with seven archival Chandra
observations of quasars that met our selection criteria, we investigate the
origin of this emission-line phenomenon in the general context of the structure
of quasars. We find that the quasars with the largest CIV blueshifts show
evidence, from joint-spectral fitting, for intrinsic X-ray absorption (N_H ~
10^22 cm^-2). Given the lack of accompanying CIV absorption, this gas is likely
to be highly ionized, and may be identified with the shielding gas in the
disk-wind paradigm. Furthermore, we find evidence for a correlation of
alpha_uv, the ultraviolet spectral index, with the hardness of the X-ray
continuum; an analysis of independent Bright Quasar Survey data from the
literature supports this conclusion. This result points to intrinsically red
quasars having systematically flatter hard X-ray continua without evidence for
X-ray absorption. We speculate on the origins of these correlations of X-ray
properties with both CIV blueshift and alpha_uv and discuss the implications

Percolation model for nodal domains of chaotic wave functions
Nodal domains are regions where a function has definite sign. In recent paper
[nlin.CD/0109029] it is conjectured that the distribution of nodal domains for
quantum eigenfunctions of chaotic systems is universal. We propose a
percolation-like model for description of these nodal domains which permits to
calculate all interesting quantities analytically, agrees well with numerical
simulations, and due to the relation to percolation theory opens the way of

The Legalization of Abortion and Subsequent Youth Homicide: A Time Series Analysis
In this article, we examine the association between the legalization of abortion with the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and youth homicide in the 1980s and 1990s. An interrupted time series design was used to examine the deaths of all U.S. 15- to 24-year-olds that were classified as homicides according to the International Classification of Diseases (codes E960-969) from 1970 to 1998. The legalization of abortion is associated over a decade later with a gradual reduction in the homicides of White and non-White young men. The effect on the homicides of young women is minimal. We conclude that the 1990s decline in the homicide of young men is statistically associated with the legalization of abortion. Findings are not consistent with several alternative explanations, such as changes in the crack cocaine drug market. It is almost inconceivable that in the United States of today, policies affecting the choice to have children would be justified as a means to control crime. Yet, if the legalization of abortion had this unintended effect, the full range of policy implications needs to be discussed
