Glossary of methods and terms used in analytical spectroscopy (IUPAC Recommendations 2019)

The key role of CD40 ligand in overcoming tumor-induced dendritic cell dysfunction

Overcoming dendritic cell (DC) dysfunction is a prerequisite for successful active immunotherapy against breast cancer. CD40 ligand (CD40L), a key molecule in the interface between T-lymphocytes and DCs, seems to be instrumental in achieving that goal. Commenting on our data that CD40L protects circulating DCs from apoptosis induced by breast tumor products, Lenahan and Avigan highlighted the potential of CD40L for immunotherapy. We expand on that argument by pointing to additional findings that CD40L not only rescues genuine DCs but also functionally improves populations of immature antigen-presenting cells that fill the DC compartment in patients with breast cancer

CD40-targeted adenoviral GM-CSF gene transfer enhances and prolongs the maturation of human CML-derived dendritic cells upon cytokine deprivation

Vaccination with autologous leukaemia-derived dendritic cells (DC) presents an adjuvant treatment option for chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Here, we show that high-efficiency CD40-targeted adenoviral gene transfer of GM-CSF to CML-derived DC induces long-lived maturation in the absence of exogenous cytokines and may thus ensure protracted stimulation of CML-specific T cells upon vaccination

IL-4-secreting CD4+ T cells are crucial to the development of CD8+ T-cell responses against malaria liver stages.

CD4+ T cells are crucial to the development of CD8+ T cell responses against hepatocytes infected with malaria parasites. In the absence of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells initiate a seemingly normal differentiation and proliferation during the first few days after immunization. However, this response fails to develop further and is reduced by more than 90%, compared to that observed in the presence of CD4+ T cells. We report here that interleukin-4 (IL-4) secreted by CD4+ T cells is essential to the full development of this CD8+ T cell response. This is the first demonstration that IL-4 is a mediator of CD4/CD8 cross-talk leading to the development of immunity against an infectious pathogen

Changing relationships between multinational companies and their host regions? A case study of Aberdeen and the international oil industry

There has been a revival of interest in recent years in the relationships between multinational corporations (hereafter MNCs) and the host regions in which they operate. The branch plant thesis which generally views inward investment by MNCs in a negative light - as reinforcing power relations between core and peripheral regions - has been challenged, with the suggestion that such developments can play a key role in linking up local economies to important flows of knowledge and information in a global economy. It has also been suggested that MNC branch plant activities are in practice often upgraded over time, leading to the development of important competitive advantage's for host regions. In this paper, such claims are investigated through a case study of the Aberdeen oil region in the north east of Scotland. The changing position of Aberdeen within the oil industry's corporate division of labour is evaluated in terms of the wider theoretical debate

Data & Agency

This introduction to the special issue on data and agency argues that datafication should not only be understood as the process of collecting and analysing data about Internet users, but also as feeding such data back to users, enabling them to orient themselves in the world. It is important that debates about data power recognise that data is also generated, collected and analysed by alternative actors, enhancing rather than undermining the agency of the public. Developing this argument, we first make clear why and how the question of agency should be central to our engagement with data. Subsequently, we discuss how this question has been operationalized in the five contributions to this special issue, which empirically open up the study of alternative forms of datafication. Building on these contributions, we conclude that as data acquire new power, it is vital to explore the space for citizen agency in relation to data structures and to examine the practices of data work, as well as the people involved in these practices

Ideas in the Hispanic Caribbean in the nineteenth century: The antillanismo as emancipatory and integration ideal

En la compleja y conflictiva realidad del Caribe hispano del siglo XIX, emerge un conjunto de ideas que se organizan en torno de la voluntad de independencia, de libertad y autoafirmación política y cultural, de integración antillana y nuestroamericana. Ideas que pueden ser sintetizadas en el término antillanismo. Fueron esgrimidas en oposición al colonialismo y al imperialismo y fundamentadas desde posiciones filosóficas que abarcaron un amplio espectro, desde la ilustración al positivismo y el krausismo. Su originalidad radica en haber constituido una trama discursiva ligada dialécticamente a los acontecimientos de la situación social e histórica que buscaba comprender y transformar.In the Spanish Caribbean complex and conflicting realities of nineteenth–century, grows a set of ideas that are organized around the desire for independence, freedom, political and cultural self–assertion and integration. These ideas can be summarized in the term antillanismo. They were put forward in opposition to colonialism and imperialism and reasoned from philosophical positions that covered a wide spectrum, from illustration to positivism and krausism.
