Noise characteristics of upper surface blown configurations: Analytical Studies
Noise and flow results of upper surface blown configurations were analyzed. The dominant noise source mechanisms were identified from experimental data. From far-field noise data for various geometric and operational parameters, an empirical noise prediction program was developed and evaluated by comparing predicted results with experimental data from other tests. USB aircraft compatibility studies were conducted using the described noise prediction and a cruise performance data base. A final design aircraft was selected and theory was developed for the noise from the trailing edge wake assuming it as a highly sheared layer
Contribution of ephemeral wetlands to annual nitrous oxide flux from an agricultural landscape
Non-Peer ReviewedMeasurement of soil nitrous oxide emissions from soil in the Canadian Prairie Region rarely includes uncultivated ephemeral wetlands (UW) within agricultural landscapes. Accurate inventories and a better understanding spatial and temporal variability for soil N2O in agricultural terrains requires flux measurements from non-agricultural areas of the field. The purpose of this study was to measure soil nitrous oxide flux from an agricultural landscape that includes UW. Measurements were taken weekly and bi-weekly from July to October of 2003 and from March to October of 2004 and 2005. Cumulative emissions were highest from concave elements (cultivated ephemeral wetlands) (CV) elements in 2003 and 2004 and highest from the basin centers (BC) of UW in 2005. High flux events were associated with rainfall in 2003, and the recession of standing water at CV and BC elements in 2004 and 2005. However, there are differences between ephemeral wetlands in their emission response to water recession. Accounting for aerial extent of landscape units reveals that CV elements make greatest contribution to total yearly flux. Beneficial management practices intended to reduce annual emissions from this site should be designed to reduce emission from CV elements and UW should not be cleared for crop production. Sampling designs for measurement of emissions from UW need not distinguish between riparian grass and riparian tree elements within the UW

An experimental data base was developed from the model upper surface blowing (USB) propulsive lift system hardware. While the emphasis was on far field noise data, a considerable amount of relevant flow field data were also obtained. The data were derived from experiments in four different facilities resulting in: (1) small scale static flow field data; (2) small scale static noise data; (3) small scale simulated forward speed noise and load data; and (4) limited larger-scale static noise flow field and load data. All of the small scale tests used the same USB flap parts. Operational and geometrical variables covered in the test program included jet velocity, nozzle shape, nozzle area, nozzle impingement angle, nozzle vertical and horizontal location, flap length, flap deflection angle, and flap radius of curvature

The NASA B-757 HIRF test series: Low power on-the-ground tests
The data acquisition phase of a program intended to provide data for the validation of computational, analytical and experimental for the assessment of electromagnetic effects i n transports, for the checkout of instrumentation for following test programs, and for the support of protection engineering of airborne systems has been completed. Funded by the NASA Fly-By-Light/Power-By-Wire Program, the initial phase involved on-the-ground electromagnetic measurements using the NASA Boeing 757 and was executed in the LESLI Facility at the USAF Phillips Laboratory. The major participants were LLNL, NASA Langley Research Center, Phillips Laboratory, and UIE, Inc. Measurements were made of the fields coupled into the aircraft interior and signals induced in select structures and equipment under controlled illumination by RF fields. A characterization of the ground was also performed to permit ground effects to be included in forthcoming validation exercises. A series of fly-by experiments were conducted in early 1995 in which the NASA B-757 was flown in the vicinity of a Voice of America station ({approximately}25 MHz), a fixed transmitter driving an LP array (172 MHz), and an ASRF radar at Wallops Island (430 MHz). In this paper, the overall test program is defined with particular attention to the on-the-ground portion. It is described in detail with presentation of the test rationale, test layout, and samples of the data. Samples of some inferences from the data that will be useful in protection engineering and EM effects mitigation will also be presented
Improving methods and indicators for evaluating coastal water eutrophication: a pilot study in the Gulf of Maine
Study Goals and Objectives:
1) Improve existing nutrient-related eutrophication assessment methods, updating (from early 1990s to early 2000s) the eutrophication assessment for systems included in the study with the improved method.
2) Develop a human-use/socioeconomic indicator to complement the assessment indicator. The human-use indicator was developed to evaluate costs of nutrient-related degradation in coastal waters and to put the issue into a broader context relevant to the interested public and legislators as well as to scientists.
3) Project objectives included collecting existing water quality data, developing an accessible database appropriate for application to a national study, and applying the assessment methods to 14 coastal systems – nine systems north of Cape Cod and five systems south. The geographical distribution of systems was used to examine potential regional differences in condition.
4) The intent is to use the lessons learned in this pilot study on a national scale to guide completion of an update of the 1999 National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment
Impedance spectroscopy analysis of Ti n O 2n − 1 Magnéli phases
This letter presents a comprehensive impedance spectroscopy characterisation of Magnéli phases (Ti n O 2n − 1 ) over a range of temperatures, which are of interest in electrochemistry and sensing applications, with the aim to enhance the understanding of their electrical properties and influence their microstructure. The impedance of the Ti n O 2n − 1 can be resolved into two different contributions, namely the grain bulk (R B ) and grain boundaries (R GB ). The ac conductivity increases with frequency and temperature, following a universal power law. The high relative permittivity (10 5 -10 6 ), which is relatively frequency independent from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz, is attributed to the presence of insulating grain boundaries (R GB NN R B ) creating an Internal Barrier Layer Capacitor (IBLC) effect. Above 100 kHz, the grain boundaries begin to contribute to the ac conductivity and the permittivity drops sharply

Understanding the structure and evolution of web-based user-object networks
is a significant task since they play a crucial role in e-commerce nowadays.
This Letter reports the empirical analysis on two large-scale web sites,
audioscrobbler.com and del.icio.us, where users are connected with music groups
and bookmarks, respectively. The degree distributions and degree-degree
correlations for both users and objects are reported. We propose a new index,
named collaborative clustering coefficient, to quantify the clustering behavior
based on the collaborative selection. Accordingly, the clustering properties
and clustering-degree correlations are investigated. We report some novel
phenomena well characterizing the selection mechanism of web users and outline
