Types of ethmoid sinus morphology on the basis of computed tomography examination
The aim of the study was the application of computed tomography (CT) in the
evaluation of types of ethmoid morphology. The material consisted of 197 CT
examinations performed, using the Somatom AR.T (Siemens) CT scanner, in
patients referred for CT for reasons other than sinus pathology. The examinations
were performed in 2-mm contiguous axial scans. Ethmoid morphology
was evaluated by means of classification into 3 types according to the degree of
aeration and the relationship of the anterior ethmoid cells to the lacrimal sac on
transversal scans. The most common was the II type (medium relationship to the
lacrimal sac) found in 38.32% of the cases. Type III (large ethmoid sinus extending
in front of the lacrimal sac) occurred in 32.49% of the patients, while the
smallest sinus (Type I) was detected in the remaining 29.19% of the cases. In
almost 1/5 of the cases asymmetry of the bilateral ethmoid anatomy was noted.
It was concluded that CT examination was useful in the evaluation of ethmoid
sinus morphology in respect to the lacrimal sac
Think then act or act then think?
We introduce a new agent-based model of opinion dynamics in which binary
opinions (yes/no) of each agent can be measured and described regarding both
pre- and post-influence at both of two levels, public and private, vis-\`a-vis
the influence source. The model combines ideas introduced within the -voter
model with noise, proposed by physicists, with the descriptive,
four-dimensional model of social response, formulated by social psychologists.
We investigate two versions of the same model that differ only by the updating
order: an opinion on the public level is updated before an opinion on the
private level or vice versa. We show how the results on the macroscopic scale
depend on this order. The main finding of this paper is that both models
produce the same outcome if one looks only at such a macroscopic variable as
the total number of the individuals with positive opinions. However, if also
the level of internal harmony (viz., dissonance) is measured, then significant,
qualitative differences are seen between these two versions of the model. All
results were obtained simultaneously within Monte Carlo simulations and
analytical calculations. We discuss the importance of our studies and findings
from three points of view: the theory of phase transitions, agent-based
modeling of social systems, and social psychology.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures, corrected typos and the algorithm description,

Polysplenia and other anatomical variants of the spleen
The anatomy, physiology and embryology of the spleen are essential fields of study for the determination of congenital varieties as well as the pathological processes occurring in this organ. The aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge on the proper development of the spleen and to present structural variants that may be of clinical significance or be important from the radiologist's point of view.Structural changes of the spleen may result in non-specific clinical symptoms, which may confuse an inexperienced physician. Inaccurate diagnosis and late diagnosis have various negative, often even fatal, consequences. In order to make an appropriate diagnosis, and thus help the patient in a timely manner, it is necessary to have extensive knowledge about the variants of the structure of the spleen. Knowledge of anatomical variations is essential for the development of a differential diagnosis, which enables the correct diagnosis to be made

Evaluation of mesenteric lymph nodes in children with abdominal pain
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes seen on pediatric abdominal ultrasound examinations performed in children with abdominal pain. Material/Methods: Ultrasound was performed with Sonoline Elegra and Philips iU-22 units with convex-array 2-5 MHz transducer for the general abdominal examination, and in addition with convex 5-8 MHz or linear 7.5 MHz transducers specially to detect lymph nodes. Results: Enlarged lymph nodes were found in 248 (21,2%) out of 1171 symptomatic patients. In 53 patients some other abnormalities were found. The nodes were mostly disc-like and oval in shape. They had usually a homogeneous appearance and were iso- or hypoechoic relative to the surrounding tissues and intestinal loops. Conclusions: Mesenteric lymphadenitis is commonly reported in children with acute, chronic or recurrent abdominal pain and no evidence of other pathologies, and has been reported as one of the most common explanation for acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain
Multiparametric ultrasonography of the pediatric scrotum and in boys with undescended testes
Due to its noninvasiveness and high resolving power, ultrasound examination is the examination
of choice for the imaging of the structures of the pediatric scrotum. It allows to
reveal changes impossible to find in the course of a clinical examination. Its significance
has increased over the past few years due to the technological developments. The introduction
of transducers with frequency of 10–17 MHz has improved the resolution of pediatric
testes images as well as the resolution of the inguinal canals images, which has been
of particular importance for the evaluation of undescended, retractile and abdominal testes.
New diagnostic tools have also been introduced, such as 3D imaging or elastography,
whose application has helped provide valuable additional information for the evaluation
of pediatric testes, for treatment monitoring, and for post-surgical follow-up examinations.
3D imaging facilitates a more accurate evaluation of the location of an undescended
testicle, testicular volume, and vascularization. Elastography may be used for the evaluation
of focal lesions, post-ischemic lesions, unclear fluid spaces, undescended testes, and
following orchiopexy
Importance of the Long-Term Seasonal Component in Day-Ahead Electricity Price Forecasting Revisited: Parameter-Rich Models Estimated via the LASSO
Recent studies suggest that decomposing a series of electricity spot prices into a trend-seasonal and a stochastic component, modeling them independently, and then combining their forecasts can yield more accurate predictions than an approach in which the same parsimonious regression or neural network-based model is calibrated to the prices themselves. Here, we show that significant accuracy gains can also be achieved in the case of parameter-rich models estimated via the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Moreover, we provide insights as to the order of applying seasonal decomposition and variance stabilizing transformations before model calibration, and propose two well-performing forecast averaging schemes that are based on different approaches for modeling the long-term seasonal component
