A buyer's guide to the Hubble Constant
Since the expansion of the universe was first established by Edwin Hubble and Georges LemaĂźtre about a century ago, the Hubble constant H0 which measures its rate has been of great interest to astronomers. Besides being interesting in its own right, few properties of the universe can be deduced without it. In the last decade, a significant gap has emerged between different methods of measuring it, some anchored in the nearby universe, others at cosmological distances. The SH0ES team has found H0=73.2±1.3kmsâ1Mpcâ1 locally, whereas the value found for the early universe by the Planck Collaboration is H0=67.4±0.5kmsâ1Mpcâ1 from measurements of the cosmic microwave background. Is this gap a sign that the well-established ÎCDM cosmological model is somehow incomplete? Or are there unknown systematics? And more practically, how should humble astronomers pick between competing claims if they need to assume a value for a certain purpose? In this article, we review results and what changes to the cosmological model could be needed to accommodate them all. For astronomers in a hurry, we provide a buyerâs guide to the results, and make recommendations
Enabling Scalable and Sustainable Softwarized 5G Environments
The fifth generation of telecommunication systems (5G) is foreseen to play a fundamental
role in our socio-economic growth by supporting various and radically new vertical
applications (such as Industry 4.0, eHealth, Smart Cities/Electrical Grids, to name
a few), as a one-fits-all technology that is enabled by emerging softwarization solutions
\u2013 specifically, the Fog, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), Network Functions Virtualization
(NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigms. Notwithstanding
the notable potential of the aforementioned technologies, a number of open issues
still need to be addressed to ensure their complete rollout. This thesis is particularly developed
towards addressing the scalability and sustainability issues in softwarized 5G
environments through contributions in three research axes: a) Infrastructure Modeling
and Analytics, b) Network Slicing and Mobility Management, and c) Network/Services Management
and Control. The main contributions include a model-based analytics approach
for real-time workload profiling and estimation of network key performance indicators
(KPIs) in NFV infrastructures (NFVIs), as well as a SDN-based multi-clustering approach
to scale geo-distributed virtual tenant networks (VTNs) and to support seamless
user/service mobility; building on these, solutions to the problems of resource consolidation,
service migration, and load balancing are also developed in the context of 5G.
All in all, this generally entails the adoption of Stochastic Models, Mathematical Programming,
Queueing Theory, Graph Theory and Team Theory principles, in the context
of Green Networking, NFV and SDN
Agents and Robots for Reliable Engineered Autonomy
This book contains the contributions of the Special Issue entitled "Agents and Robots for Reliable Engineered Autonomy". The Special Issue was based on the successful first edition of the "Workshop on Agents and Robots for reliable Engineered Autonomy" (AREA 2020), co-located with the 24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2020). The aim was to bring together researchers from autonomous agents, as well as software engineering and robotics communities, as combining knowledge from these three research areas may lead to innovative approaches that solve complex problems related to the verification and validation of autonomous robotic systems
Rethinking Environmentally Induced Displacement in the Global North (pubblicazione integrale della tesi di dottorato)
This research investigates how the environmentally induced displacement phenomenon is perceived in the Global North on the basis of the evidence gathered in in two Italian catatsrophes. An analysis on the environmental resources management and the vulnerability in Italy has been associated with a study over media coverage, political discourses and personal experiences about environmentally induced displacements following the two landslides in Sarno (1998) and Cerzeto (2005), highlighting the limits of the use of this concept. Moreover, this research illustrated how, contrarily to the current debate, the phenomenon is likely to occur both in the Global North and Global South contexts. The theoretical, political and media discourses and representations seem to be, in fact, mostly focused on specific geographical areas of the Global South. The motivations behind these different descriptions and narratives on the same concept are investigated, through geographical and political science tools. The findings of this research reveal a political agenda exploiting the debate to reinforce the power unbalance within the Global North and between the Global North and the Global South
The Fifteenth Marcel Grossmann Meeting
The three volumes of the proceedings of MG15 give a broad view of all aspects of gravitational physics and astrophysics, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments. The scientific program of the meeting included 40 morning plenary talks over 6 days, 5 evening popular talks and nearly 100 parallel sessions on 71 topics spread over 4 afternoons. These proceedings are a representative sample of the very many oral and poster presentations made at the meeting.Part A contains plenary and review articles and the contributions from some parallel sessions, while Parts B and C consist of those from the remaining parallel sessions. The contents range from the mathematical foundations of classical and quantum gravitational theories including recent developments in string theory, to precision tests of general relativity including progress towards the detection of gravitational waves, and from supernova cosmology to relativistic astrophysics, including topics such as gamma ray bursts, black hole physics both in our galaxy and in active galactic nuclei in other galaxies, and neutron star, pulsar and white dwarf astrophysics. LâattivitĂ dei Centri Antifumo italiani tra problematiche e aree da potenziare: i risultati di unâindagine svolta attraverso un questionario on-line
Introduzione. In Italia sono 295 i Servizi per la cessazione dal
fumo di tabacco (Centri Antifumo - CA) afferenti al Servizio Sanitario
Nazionale (SSN) censiti nel 2011 dallâOsservatorio Fumo,
Alcol e Droga (OssFAD) dellâIstituto Superiore di SanitĂ . La presente
indagine, condotta dallâOssFAD in collaborazione con i CA,
Ăš stata volta a rilevare alcune delle problematiche con le quali il
personale dei CA si confronta per portare avanti la propria attivitĂ
e le iniziative ritenute utili per migliorarla.
Materiali e metodi. Lâindagine Ăš stata condotta dal 7 al 21
maggio 2012, mediante un questionario compilabile on-line
composto da 5 brevi sezioni di domande con un totale di 38
items da completare. Il link al questionario on-line Ăš stato inviato
per e-mail a 322 indirizzi dei CA censiti nel 2011 dallâOssFAD. I
dati raccolti sono stati elaborati statisticamente con il programma
SPSS 20.
Risultati. Allâindagine hanno risposto 146 operatori dei CA
(45,3%). Sebbene ci siano aspetti ormai consolidati dellâattivitĂ
dei CA, sono ancora molte le criticitĂ che gli operatori riscontrano
nella loro attivitĂ . Le principali problematiche che influiscono
in modo fondamentale/rilevante per la buona attivitĂ
del centro sono le âScarse o nulle risorse economicheâ per il
60,7% del personale, âla mancanza di personale dedicatoâ per
il 52,4% del personale; il âriconoscimento/mandato istituzionale
del CAâ per il 40,9% del personale. Tra le azioni ritenute
piĂč efficaci per facilitare lâaccesso ai CA sono risultate la sensibilizzazione
del personale sanitario (91%), in particolare dei medici
di famiglia e lâinserimento delle prestazioni antitabagiche
nei LEA (76,8%).
Conclusioni. Ă auspicabile che lâattivitĂ dei CA riceva una maggiore
attenzione, attraverso la dotazione di strutture, personale
e finanziamenti adeguati a svolgere un importante ruolo nella
tutela e promozione della salute
