    Integrated photonic building blocks for next-generation astronomical instrumentation II: the multimode to single mode transition

    There are numerous advantages to exploiting diffraction-limited instrumentation at astronomical observatories, which include smaller footprints, less mechanical and thermal instabilities and high levels of performance. To realize such instrumentation it is imperative to convert the atmospheric seeing-limited signal that is captured by the telescope into a diffraction-limited signal. This process can be achieved photonically by using a mode reformatting device known as a photonic lantern that performs a multimode to single-mode transition. With the aim of developing an optimized integrated photonic lantern, we undertook a systematic parameter scan of devices fabricated by the femtosecond laser direct-write technique. The devices were designed for operation around 1.55 {\mu}m. The devices showed (coupling and transition) losses of less than 5% for F/# \geq 12 injection and the total device throughput (including substrate absorption) as high as 75-80%.     Multiband processing of multimode light: combining 3D photonic lanterns with waveguide Bragg gratings

    The first demonstration of narrowband spectral filtering of multimode light on a 3D integrated photonic chip using photonic lanterns and waveguide Bragg gratings is reported. The photonic lanterns with multi-notch waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated using the femtosecond direct-write technique in boro-aluminosilicate glass (Corning, Eagle 2000). Transmission dips of up to 5 dB were measured in both photonic lanterns and reference single-mode waveguides with 10.4-mm-long gratings. The result demonstrates efficient and symmetrical performance of each of the gratings in the photonic lantern. Such devices will be beneficial to space-division multiplexed communication systems as well as for units for astronomical instrumentation for suppression of the atmospheric telluric emission from OH lines.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Laser & Photonics Review

    Reversed-Spin Quasiparticles in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems and Their Effect on Photoluminescence

    The energy, interaction, and optical properties of reversed-spin quasielectrons (QE_R's) in fractional quantum Hall systems are studied. Based on the short range of the QE_R-QE_R repulsion, a partially unpolarized incompressible nu=4/11 state is postulated within Haldane hierarchy scheme. To describe photoluminescence, a reversed-spin fractionally charged exciton hQE_R (QE_R bound to a valence hole h) is predicted.     1. Chiral polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) such as PCB 136 enantioselectively sensitize the ryanodine receptor (RyR). In light of recent evidence that PCBs cause developmental neurotoxicity via RyR-dependent mechanisms, this suggests that enantioselective PCB metabolism may influence the developmental neurotoxicity of chiral PCBs. However, enantioselective disposition of PCBs has not been fully characterized. 2. The effect of sex and cytochrome P450 (P450) enzyme induction on the enantioselective metabolism of PCB 136 was studied using liver tissue slices prepared from naïve control (CTL), phenobarbital (PB; CYP2B inducer) or dexamethasone (DEX; CYP3A inducer) pretreated adult Sprague-Dawley rats. PCB 136 metabolism was also examined in hippocampal slices derived from untreated rat pups. 3. In liver tissue slices, hydroxylated PCB (OH-PCB) profiles depended on sex and inducer pretreatment, and OH-PCB levels followed the rank orders male > female and PB > DEX > CTL. In contrast, the enantiomeric enrichment of PCB 136 and its metabolites was independent of sex and inducer pretreatment. Only small amounts of PCB 136 partitioned into hippocampal tissue slices and no OH-PCB metabolites were detected. 4. Our results suggest that enantioselective metabolism, sex and induction status of P450 enzymes in the liver may modulate the neurotoxic outcomes of developmental exposure to chiral PCBs

    Cyber-behavior and emotional dependency in young couples

    The use of the ICT and the cyber media is leading to new forms of socialization and communication among youth. Virtual environment has become a new context for relating to other people which also includes the establishment and development of couple relationships. At the same time, couple relationships\ud in youth can be very satisfactory, although many studies also described the existence of different problems such as inadequate behaviors towards the partners or emotional dependency. Thus, the current work describes the use of different cyber media among youth and its relationship to the levels of emotional dependency. First, a questionnaire on the use of cyber media in oneself and perceived in a partner was answered by the participants. At the same time, the IRIDS-100 questionnaire for the assessment of the emotional dependency was responded.\ud Both instruments were answered by 100 students between 19 and 32 years old, enrolled in the University of Córdoba. Results showed frequent use of WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube in oneself and also perceived in the partner. Moreover, positive correlations were found between its use in oneself and perceived in the partner and emotional dependency. Taking into account that the cyber media have changed the way of relating among young people, with their peers and their couples, the results of the current study contribute to this topic suggesting\ud at the same time new lines of studies related to the emotional dependency expressed through the cyber media
