The 2mrad crossing angle scheme for the international linear collider

    No full text
http://cern.ch/AccelConf/e08/papers/mopp005.pdfInternational audienceThe present baseline configuration of the ILC has a 14 mrad crossing angle between the beams at the interaction point. This allows easier extraction of the beams after col- lisions, but imposes on the other hand more constraints on the control of the beams prior to colliding them. More- over, some limitations to physics capabilities arise, in par- ticular because of the degraded very forward electromag- netic detector hermeticity and because calibration proce- dures for (gaseous) tracking detectors become more com- plex. To mitigate these problems, alternative configurations with very small crossing angles are studied. A new version of the 2 mrad layout was designed last year, based on sim- pler concepts and assumptions. The emphasis of this new scheme was to satisfy specifications with as few and feasi- ble magnets as possible, in order to reduce costs

Band-theoretical prediction of magnetic anisotropy in uranium monochalcogenides

Magnetic anisotropy of uranium monochalcogenides, US, USe and UTe, is studied by means of fully-relativistic spin-polarized band structure calculations within the local spin-density approximation. It is found that the size of the magnetic anisotropy is fairly large (about 10 meV/unit formula), which is comparable with experiment. This strong anisotropy is discussed in view of a pseudo-gap formation, of which crucial ingredients are the exchange splitting of U 5f states and their hybridization with chalcogen p states (f-p hybridization). An anomalous trend in the anisotropy is found in the series (US>>USe<UTe) and interpreted in terms of competition between localization of the U 5f states and the f-p hybridization. It is the spin-orbit interaction on the chalcogen p states that plays an essential role in enlarging the strength of the f-p hybridization in UTe, leading to an anomalous systematic trend in the magnetic anisotropy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Semiclassical short strings in AdS_5 x S^5

We present results for the one-loop correction to the energy of a class of string solutions in AdS_5 x S^5 in the short string limit. The computation is based on the observation that, as for rigid spinning string elliptic solutions, the fluctuation operators can be put into the single-gap Lame' form. Our computation reveals a remarkable universality of the form of the energy of short semiclassical strings. This may help to understand better the structure of the strong coupling expansion of the anomalous dimensions of dual gauge theory operators.Comment: 12 pages, one pdf figure. One-loop corrections to AdS_5 x S^5 superstring partition function via Pohlmeyer reduction

We discuss semiclassical expansions around a class of classical string configurations lying in AdS_3 x S^1 using the Pohlmeyer-reduced from of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring theory. The Pohlmeyer reduction of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring theory is a gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model with an integrable potential and two-dimensional fermionic fields. It was recently conjectured that the quantum string partition function is equal to the quantum reduced theory partition function. Continuing the previous paper (arXiv:0906.3800) where arbitrary solutions in AdS_2 x S^2 and homogeneous solutions were considered, we provide explicit demonstration of this conjecture at the one-loop level for several string solutions in AdS_3 x S^1 embedded into AdS_5 x S^5. Quadratic fluctuations derived in the reduced theory for inhomogeneous strings are equivalent to respective fluctuations found from the Nambu action in the original string theory. We also show the equivalence of fluctuation frequencies for homogeneous strings with both the orbital momentum and the winding on a big circle of S^5.Comment: 45 pages, references added, minor correction

Characterization and Tuning of Ultra High Gradient Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles

    Get PDF
The application of quadrupole-devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole-device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. Consequently, the size of the aperture can be minimized to match the beam size achieving field gradients of up to 500 T/m at good imaging quality. The characterization method based on a Hall probe measurement and a Fourier analysis was confirmed using the high quality electron beam at the Mainz Microtron MAMI

Generalized cusp in AdS_4 x CP^3 and more one-loop results from semiclassical strings

    Get PDF
We evaluate the exact one-loop partition function for fundamental strings whose world-surface ends on a cusp at the boundary of AdS_4 and has a "jump" in CP^3. This allows us to extract the stringy prediction for the ABJM generalized cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_{cusp}^{ABJM} (phi, theta) up to NLO in sigma-model perturbation theory. With a similar analysis, we present the exact partition functions for folded closed string solutions moving in the AdS_3 parts of AdS_4 x CP^3 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 backgrounds. Results are obtained applying to the string solutions relevant for the AdS_4/CFT_3 and AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence the tools previously developed for their AdS_5 x S^5 counterparts.Comment: 48 pages, 2 figures, version 3, corrected misprints in formulas 2.12, B.86, C.33, added comment on verification of the light-like limi

First πK\pi K atom lifetime and πK\pi K scattering length measurements

The results of a search for hydrogen-like atoms consisting of πK±\pi^{\mp}K^{\pm} mesons are presented. Evidence for πK\pi K atom production by 24 GeV/c protons from CERN PS interacting with a nickel target has been seen in terms of characteristic πK\pi K pairs from their breakup in the same target (178±49178 \pm 49) and from Coulomb final state interaction (653±42653 \pm 42). Using these results the analysis yields a first value for the πK\pi K atom lifetime of τ=(2.51.8+3.0)\tau=(2.5_{-1.8}^{+3.0}) fs and a first model-independent measurement of the S-wave isospin-odd πK\pi K scattering length a0=13a1/2a3/2=(0.110.04+0.09)Mπ1\left|a_0^-\right|=\frac{1}{3}\left|a_{1/2}-a_{3/2}\right|= \left(0.11_{-0.04}^{+0.09} \right)M_{\pi}^{-1} (aIa_I for isospin II).Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
