The Problem of Substantial Generation in Aristotle\u27s Physical Writings

    Get PDF
This dissertation explores the relation between Aristotle\u27s account of the generation of substances and his attempt to lay the foundations for his natural philosophy. The central question concerns the injunction posed by the Eleatic philosophers to the study of nature on the basis of the principle ex nihilo nihil which they formulated into argument against the intelligibility of nature. Aristotle\u27s Physics begins with a sustained attempt to defeat the Eleatic prohibition by demonstrating that change in general can be understood once a few principles are established. My reading of the arguments that constitute Aristotle\u27s refutation of the Eleatics and the rehabilitation of the Milesian project of natural philosophy corrects the traditional view that interprets Aristotle\u27s understanding of substantial generation by means of his general account of change in Physics I.7. This correction, however, complicates the issue of the coherence of Aristotle\u27s arguments establishing the legitimacy of the science of nature. To resolve the issues raised here, an appeal must be made to Aristotle\u27s definition of motion in Physics III in order to reinterpret Aristotle\u27s account of substantial generation in terms of potentiality and actuality. This definition once properly understood applied as a model for substantial generation allows for a more satisfactory resolution to the Eleatic dilemma

    Eichler\u27s Rockland County Lodge

    Get PDF
Developer Joseph Eichler was a residential architect in Northern California. These homes reflect the beauty and uniqueness of the Eichler design and the integrity and daring of the builder behind it. Eichler homes are considered historical landmarks in the state of California making them celebrated buildings. For this project we explored the architects design thinking and aesthetic to create an authentic mid-century modern lodge for visitors to stay in. In addition, we researched and created branding, graphics, & fabric lines to inspire and create the most authentic experience possible. These deliverables greatly influenced the design of this Eichler Lodge

A Communicative Approach to Teaching Phrasal Verbs

    Get PDF
The intention of this independent professional project is to present a way in which phrasal verbs can be taught communicatively. Included in it are five lesson plans which clearly illustrate ways in which this can be done. A grammatical analysis is also included as it is felt that students need to know some of the rules governing phrasal verbs to be able to use them correctly and effectively. A second part of the grammar analysis deals with aspects of phrasal verbs which can be an aid to the teacher in choosing and organizing phrasal verb lesson plans. The lesson plans included in this IPP are organized according to semantic category; e.g., literal, completive, and figurative. The figurative phrasal verb lesson plans are grouped according to topics. Within each lesson plan, listening and speaking skills are emphasized. Activities based on realia, personal student input, and games are examples of the kinds of exercises found in any one lesson plan

Observed crustal uplift near the Southern Patagonian Icefield constrains improved viscoelastic Earth model

    Get PDF
Thirty‒one GPS geodetic measurements of crustal uplift in southernmost South America determined extraordinarily high trend rates (> 35 mm/yr) in the north‒central part of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. These trends have a coherent pattern, motivating a refined viscoelastic glacial isostatic adjustment model to explain the observations. Two end‒member models provide good fits: both require a lithospheric thickness of 36.5 ± 5.3 km. However, one end‒member has a mantle viscosity near η =1.6 ×1018 Pa s and an ice collapse rate from the Little Ice Age (LIA) maximum comparable to a lowest recent estimate of 1995–2012 ice loss at about −11 Gt/yr. In contrast, the other end‒member has much larger viscosity: η = 8.0 ×1018 Pa s, half the post–LIA collapse rate, and a steadily rising loss rate in the twentieth century after AD 1943, reaching −25.9 Gt/yr during 1995–2012.Fil: Lange, H..
