    Differentiating polarization curve technique for determining the exchange current density of hydrogen electrode reaction

    The authors propose a new method to easily and reliably determine the exchange current density (i0) of hydrogen evolution reaction (her). The validity of a novel method named the differential polarization method (DPM) was ascertained by the estimation of i0 on platinum electrode in acid solutions. The hers in 0.005, 0.05 and 0.5 mol dmāˆ’3 H2SO4 solutions were visually categorized as reversible reactions. The obtained i0 had constant values of about 0.5 mA cmāˆ’2, corresponding to the appearance of a vertical line on the anodic polarization resistance curve. This DPM shows the i0 is corresponds to the limiting diffusion current density of the hydrogen oxidation reaction. We believe that the DPM has the potential to be a beneficial and reliable method for estimating electrochemical parameters

    Craniocervical junction abnormalities with atlantoaxial subluxation caused by ventral subluxation of C2 in a dog

    Craniocervical junction abnormalities with atlantoaxial subluxation caused by ventral subluxation of C2 were diagnosed in a 6-month-old female Pomeranian with tetraplegia as a clinical sign. Lateral survey radiography of the neck with flexion revealedĀ  atlantoaxial subluxation with ventral subluxation of C2. Computed tomography revealed absence of dens and atlanto-occipital overlapping. Magnetic resonance imaging showed compression of the spinal cord and indentation of caudal cerebellum. The diagnosis was Chiari-like malformation, atlantoaxial subluxation with ventral displacement of C2,Ā  atlanto-occipital overlapping, and syringomyelia. The dog underwent foramen magnum decompression, dorsal laminectomy of C1, and ventral fixation of the atlantoaxial joint. Soon after the operation, voluntary movements of the legs were recovered. Finally, the dog could stand and walk without assistance. The dog had complicated malformations at the craniocervical junction but foramen magnum decompression and dorsalĀ  laminectomy for Chiari-like malformation, and ventral fixation for atlantoaxialĀ  subluxation resulted in an excellent clinical outcome.Keywords: Atlantoaxial subluxation, Atlanto-occipital overlapping, Chiari-likeĀ  malformation, Craniocervical junction abnormalities, Foramen magnumĀ  decompression

    Agesasines A and B, Bromopyrrole Alkaloids from Marine Sponges Agelas spp.

    Exploration for specialized metabolites of Okinawan marine sponges Agelas spp. resulted in the isolation of five new bromopyrrole alkaloids, agesasines A (1) and B (2), 9-hydroxydihydrodispacamide (3), 9-hydroxydihydrooroidin (4), and 9E-keramadine (5). Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses. Agesasines A (1) and B (2) were assigned as rare bromopyrrole alkaloids lacking an aminoimidazole moiety, while 3ā€“5 were elucidated to be linear bromopyrrole alkaloids with either aminoimidazolone, aminoimidazole, or N-methylated aminoimidazole moieties

    SummaryBackgroundRelationships among clinical, physiological, imaging and pathological findings of small airway disease associated with Sjƶgrenā€™s syndrome have remained unclear.Subjects and methods: We retrospectively studied 14 patients who underwent surgical lung biopsy and who were diagnosed with small airway disease associated with primary or secondary Sjƶgrenā€™s syndrome. We compared clinical, bronchoalveolar lavage, physiological, imaging and pathological findings between primary and secondary Sjƶgrenā€™s syndrome. We scored HRCT and pathological abnormalities and investigated correlations among physiological, HRCT and pathological data, changes in physiological parameters and in HRCT scores after two years of treatment, as well as correlations between these values and pathological scores.ResultsBronchoalveolar lavage fluid, physiological, imaging and pathological findings of the airways did not significantly differ between primary and secondary Sjƶgrenā€™s syndrome. Air trapping on HRCT negatively correlated with MEF50 and MEF25. Although lymphoid cell infiltration and peribronchiolar fibrosis were the most common pathologies, constrictive change scores correlated negatively with MEF50 and MEF25, positively with air trapping scores and negatively with improvements after therapy in MEF50, MEF25 and air trapping.ConclusionsConstrictive change was the most significant determinant of physiological and imaging presentations and of changes in these factors after therapy for small airway disease associated with Sjƶgrenā€™s syndrome

    Spectroscopy of eta'-nucleus bound states at GSI-SIS

    The eta' meson mass may be reduced due to partial restoration of chiral symmetry. If this is the case, an eta'-nucleus system may form a nuclear bound state. We plan to carry out a missing-mass spectroscopy with the 12C(p,d) reaction at GSI-SIS.     The PHCCEx domain of Tiam1/2 is a novel protein- and membrane-binding module

    Tiam1 and Tiam2 (Tiam1/2) are guanine nucleotide-exchange factors that possess the PHā€“CCā€“Ex (pleckstrin homology, coiled coil and extra) region that mediates binding to plasma membranes and signalling proteins in the activation of Rac GTPases. Crystal structures of the PHā€“CCā€“Ex regions revealed a single globular domain, PHCCEx domain, comprising a conventional PH subdomain associated with an antiparallel coiled coil of CC subdomain and a novel three-helical globular Ex subdomain. The PH subdomain resembles the Ī²-spectrin PH domain, suggesting non-canonical phosphatidylinositol binding. Mutational and binding studies indicated that CC and Ex subdomains form a positively charged surface for protein binding. We identified two unique acidic sequence motifs in Tiam1/2-interacting proteins for binding to PHCCEx domain, Motif-I in CD44 and ephrinB's and the NMDA receptor, and Motif-II in Par3 and JIP2. Our results suggest the molecular basis by which the Tiam1/2 PHCCEx domain facilitates dual binding to membranes and signalling proteins

    Feasibility Study of Observing eta' Mesic Nuclei with (p,d) Reaction

    A novel method is proposed to measure eta'(958) meson bound states in 11C nuclei by missing mass spectroscopy of the 12C(p,d) reaction near the eta' production threshold. It is shown that peak structures will be observed experimentally in an inclusive measurement in case that the in-medium eta' mass reduction is sufficiently large and that the decay width of eta' mesic states is narrow enough. Such a measurement will be feasible with the intense proton beam supplied by the SIS synchrotron at GSI combined with the good energy resolution of the fragment separator FRS.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Progress of Theoretical Physic

    Organoids with cancer stem cell-like properties secrete exosomes and HSP90 in a 3D nanoenvironment

    Ability to form cellular aggregations such as tumorspheres and spheroids have been used as a morphological marker of malignant cancer cells and in particular cancer stem cells (CSC). However, the common definition of the types of cellular aggregation formed by cancer cells has not been available. We examined morphologies of 67 cell lines cultured on three dimensional morphology enhancing NanoCulture Plates (NCP) and classified the types of cellular aggregates that form. Among the 67 cell lines, 49 cell lines formed spheres or spheroids, 8 cell lines formed grape-like aggregation (GLA), 8 cell lines formed other types of aggregation, and 3 cell lines formed monolayer sheets. Seven GLA-forming cell lines were derived from adenocarcinoma among the 8 lines. A neuroendocrine adenocarcinoma cell line PC-3 formed asymmetric GLA with ductal structures on the NCPs and rapidly growing asymmetric tumors that metastasized to lymph nodes in immunocompromised mice. In contrast, another adenocarcinoma cell line DU-145 formed spheroids in vitro and spheroid-like tumors in vivo that did not metastasize to lymph nodes until day 50 after transplantation. Culture in the 3D nanoenvironment and in a defined stem cell medium enabled the neuroendocrine adenocarcinoma cells to form slowly growing large organoids that expressed multiple stem cell markers, neuroendocrine markers, intercellular adhesion molecules, and oncogenes in vitro. In contrast, the more commonly used 2D serum-contained environment reduced intercellular adhesion and induced mesenchymal transition and promoted rapid growth of the cells. In addition, the 3D stemness nanoenvironment promoted secretion of HSP90 and EpCAM-exosomes, a marker of CSC phenotype, from the neuroendocrine organoids. These findings indicate that the NCP-based 3D environment enables cells to form stem cell tumoroids with multipotency and model more accurately the in vivo tumor status at the levels of morphology and gene expression
