    East India Company Strategies in the Development of Singapore

    Singapore in the Malay Peninsula was targeted by the British East India Company (EIC) to be the epicentre of their direct rule in Southeast Asia. Seeking new sources of revenue at the end of the 18th century, after attaining domination in India, the Company sought to extend its reach into China, and Malaya was the natural region to do this, extending outposts to Penang and Singapore. The latter was first identified as a key site by Stamford Raffles. The EIC Governor General Marquess Hastings (r. 1813-1823) planned to facilitate Raffle’s attention on the Malay Peninsula from Sumatra. Raffles’ plan for Singapore was approved by the EIC’s Bengal Government. The modern system of administration came into the Straits Settlements under the EIC’s Bengal Presidency. In 1819 in Singapore, Raffles established an Anglo-Oriental College (AOC) for the study of Eastern languages, literature, history, and science. The AOC was intended firstly to be the centre of local research and secondly to increase inter-cultural knowledge of the East and West. Besides Raffles’ efforts, the EIC developed political and socio-economic systems for Singapore. The most important aspects of the social development of Singapore were proper accommodation for migrants, poverty eradication, health care, a new system of education, and women’s rights. The free trade introduced by Francis Light (and later Stamford Raffles) in Penang and Singapore respectively gave enormous opportunities for approved merchants to expand their commerce from Burma to Australia and from Java to China. Before the termination of the China trade in 1833 Singapore developed tremendously, and cemented the role of the European trading paradigm in the East

It discusses Chinggis Khan's charismatic leadership qualities that united all nomadic tribes and gave him the authority to become the supreme Mongol leader, which helped him to invade Khorasan. It also focuses on the rise of the Muslim cities in Khorasan where many Muslim scholars kept their intellectual brilliance and made Khorasan the cultural capital of the Muslims. This study apprises us of Chinggis Khan's war tactics and administrative system which made his men extremely strong and advanced despite their culture remaining barbaric in nature. His progeny also followed a similar policy for a long time until all Muslim cities were fully destroyed. The work also focuses on the rise of many sectarian divisions among the Muslims which brought disunity that eventually led to their downfall. Thus, this study underscores the importance of revitalization of unity in the Muslim world so that Muslims may not become vulnerable to any foreign imperialistic power. Unity also is the key to preserve Muslim intellectual thought and Islamic cultural identities

    Almost 85% of epilepsy patients which is a common neurolotical disease lives in developing world. Mostly the disease start in childhoold in more than half o the cases. Long term use of antiepileptic drugs may alter serum zinc level.   The purpose of the present study was to assess the serum zinc level in childhood epilepsy treated with long-term Anti Epileptic Drug (AED). This cross-sectional study was carried out in the outdoor and indoor patient department of Pediatric neurology, BSMMU during the period from March 2013 to August 2013. Sample size was one hundred, among these fifty were case e.g. epileptic child who had received  anti epileptic drugs (Carbamazepine and/or Valproic acid) for more than three months and fifty werecontrol e.g. newly diagnosed epileptic child, who have not yet received antiepileptic drugs.  In this study, among100 epileptic child, mean serum zinc level in case group was 0.36(±0.20)(µg/ml)and incontrol group was 0.52(±0.26) (µg/ml),which was statistically significant (p<0.05). The use of one drug or multiple drugs in the treatment of epileptic patients has made the significant low serum zinc level

    Risk factors for respiratory failure in Guillain-Barre syndrome in Bangladesh: a prospective study

    Objective: We investigated clinical, biological, and electrophysiological risk factors for mechanical ventilation (MV) and patient outcomes in Bangladesh using one of the largest, prospective Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) cohorts in developing world. Methods: A total of 693 GBS patients were included in two GBS studies conducted between 2006 and 2016 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Associations between baseline characteristics and MV were tested using Fisher’s exact test, v2 test, or Mann–Whitney U-test, as appropriate. Risk factors for MV were assessed using multivariate logistic regression. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan–Meier method; comparisons between groups performed using logrank test. Results: Of 693 patients, 155 (23%) required MV (median age, 26 years; interquartile range [IQR] 17–40). Among the ventilated patients, males were predominant (68%) than females. The most significant risk factor for MV was bulbar involvement (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]:19.07; 95% CI = 89.00– 192.57, P = 0.012). Other independently associated factors included dysautonomia (AOR:4.88; 95% CI = 1.49–15.98, P = 0.009) and severe muscle weakness at study entry (AOR:6.12; 95% CI = 0.64–58.57, P = 0.048). At 6 months after disease onset, 20% of ventilated and 52% of non-ventilated patients (P < 0.001) had recovered completely or with minor symptoms. Mortality rate was significantly higher among ventilated patients than non-ventilated patients (41% vs. 7%, P < 0.001). Interpretation: Bulbar involvement, dysautonomia and severe muscle weakness were identified as the most important risk factors for MV among GBS patients from Bangladesh. The findings may help to develop predictive models for MV in GBS in developing countries to identify impending respiratory failure and proper clinical management of GBS patients

    The Expansion of Penang under the East India Company

    This study highlights that the British had long experiences in the Malay Peninsula before Francis Light’s acquisition and development of Penang, due to the central role of Malayan ports such as Kedah, Takuapa, Langkasuka, Terengganu, Palembang, Siak, and Malacca in global trade between China and India. Under the influence of Islam, Malacca (and, to a lesser extent, Kedah) became a Muslim Sultanate and reached its peak in this trading network, which attracted European traders (and subsequent colonialism), initially from Portugal and Spain, and later France, the Netherlands, and Britain. After the East India Company attained hegemony in India, it was strongly placed to extend its power from its presidencies in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. The EIC’s main focus was Bengal, where the Company founded the Fort William College as its headquarters in Calcutta. As trade with China became more important, the Malay Peninsula commensurately became a more attractive destination for investment due to its closer proximity to the Chinese sea lanes, and closer access to the Indo-Malay hinterlands and their products. In 1784, the EIC sent Kinloch to Aceh but he was unsuccessful in negotiating to establish a factory there. Nevertheless, they succeeded in establishing a foothold in Malaya with Francis Light’s embassy to Riau, Kedah, and Penang. Kedah also became prosperous under the Muslim Sultanates. Many Chinese and Indian merchants were settled there, benefitting from the trade in jungle products like camphor, betelnut, bird nests, situated near the Kedah River, was identified as a strategic location. Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin Muazzam Shah II of Kedah (r. 1710-1778) at that time was facing many internal as well as external conflicts. His son Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah (r. 1778-1797) also suffered the same fate. As a result of internal crisis and dynastic intrigues, he agreed to lease Penang to the EIC in exchange for military assistance in 1785. In July 1786, Francis Light sailed from Calcutta and reached Penang in August, and thus Penang became an EIC stronghold

This paper analyzes Physical Layer Security (PLS) applied to 6G Radio Access Networks (RAN) to enhance Layer-1 security. The description defines a PLS air interface and system model with AI/ML-based intelligent codebook generation and detection schemes. The paper also proposes an operational overview of AI/ML integrated PLS with shared key-agreement protocol in an O-RAN architecture for 6G security. Results include codebook generation details, the impact of MIMO antenna array size, and the key-Bit Error rate (BER) of 6G-PLS detection in the presence of eavesdroppers and Rayleigh fading plus noise

    Adipose tissue-derived hormone leptin plays a functional role in glucose tolerance through its effects on insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity which also represent the risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The present study explored the gender specific association of serum leptin and insulinemic indices with NAFLD in Bangladeshi prediabetic subjects. Under a cross-sectional analytical design a total of 110 ultrasound examined prediabetic subjects, aged 25-68 years consisting of 57.3% male (55.6% non NAFLD and 44.4% NAFLD) and 42.7% female (57.4% non NAFLD and 42.6% NAFLD), were investigated. Insulin secretory function (HOMA%B) and insulin sensitivity (HOMA%S) were calculated from homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). Serum leptin showed significant positive correlation with fasting insulin (r = 0.530, P = 0.004), postprandial insulin (r = 0.384, P = 0.042) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.541, P = 0.003) as well as significant negative correlation with HOMA%S (r = -0.388, P = 0.046) and HOMA%B (r = -0.356, P = 0.039) in male prediabetic subjects with NAFLD. In multiple linear regression analysis, log transformed leptin showed significant positive association with HOMA-IR (β = 0.706, P <0.001) after adjusting the effects of body mass index (BMI), triglyceride (TG) and HOMA%B in male subjects with NAFLD. In binary logistic regression analysis, only log leptin [OR 1.29 95% (C.I) (1.11-1.51), P = 0.001] in male subjects as well as HOMA%B [OR 0.94 95% (C.I) (0.89-0.98), P = 0.012], HOMA-IR [OR 3.30 95% (C.I) (0.99-10.95), P = 0.049] and log leptin [OR 1.10 95% (C.I) (1.01-1.20), P = 0.026] in female subjects were found to be independent determinants of NAFLD after adjusting the BMI and TG. Serum leptin seems to have an association with NAFLD both in male and female prediabetic subjects and this association in turn, is mediated by insulin secretory dysfunction and insulin resistance among these subjects

    458-463In vitro production of doubled haploid (DH) plants through anther-culture provides an efficient and convenient system for rapid production of homozygous lines. Various pretreatments have been reported to influence callus induction and plantlet regeneration efficiency. In the present study, cold pretreated anthers <span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: bold">influenced the embryoid formation in five different induction media where hormonal combination was modified. Regeneration potential of 25 rice cultivars was assessed on the basis of anther response, embryo induction, plantlet regeneration and production of green and albino plantlets. Of 20 rice cultivars, embryoids were obtained from only five cultivars on media containing specific amino acids and different combination of phytohormones. IR43 produced maximum embryos (16.13%) and green plantlets (11.88%), followed by BRRI dhan33, IR54, Jaya and BR3 in SK3 medium. All the responding genotypes produced albinos in addition to the green plantlets. Cold pretreatment at 4°C for 3-7 d generated highest frequency of embryos and green plantlets. However, all the responding genotypes showed better induction from cold pretreated anthers in comparison to the control. 5-d (T3) cold pretreatment was found to be the most effective compared to other treatments on SK3 medium. </span
