Far infrared luminosity functions of normal galaxies

    Get PDF
Researchers constructed a volume limited sample of 443 optically selected nearby galaxies from the Zwicky catalog to study far infrared luminosity functions. Schechter function fits and integrated luminosity densities are calculated. Comparing the resulting infrared spectrum with the infrared spectrum for interstellar matter in the solar neighborhood, researchers find most of the infrared emission is due to dust heated by the interstellar radiation field, except at 60 micron emission where star forming regions contribute significantly

Survival analysis, or what to do with upper limits in astronomical surveys

    Get PDF
A field of applied statistics called survival analysis has been developed over several decades to deal with censored data, which occur in astronomical surveys when objects are too faint to be detected. How these methods can assist in the statistical interpretation of astronomical data are reviewed

Many-particle simulation of the evacuation process from a room without visibility

We study the evacuation process from a smoky room by means of experiments and simulations. People in a dark or smoky room are mimicked by ``blind'' students wearing eye masks. The evacuation of the disoriented students from the room is observed by video cameras, and the escape time of each student is measured. We find that the disoriented students exhibit a distinctly different behavior compared with a situation in which people can see and orient themselves. Our experimental results are reproduced by an extended lattice gas model taking into account the empirically observed behavior. Our particular focus is on the mean value and distribution of escape times. For a large number of people in the room, the escape time distribution is wide because of jamming. Surprisingly, adding more exits does not improve the situation in the expected way, since most people use the exit that is discovered first, which may be viewed as ``herding effect'' based on accoustic interactions. Moreover, the average escape time becomes minimal for a certain finite number of people in the dark or smoky room. These non-linear effects have practical implications for emergency evacuation and the planning of safer buildings.Comment: For related work see http://www.helbing.or

Eosinophilic Granuloma in a Patient with Marked Improvements of Social Activity as well as Clinical Manifestations

    Get PDF
A twenty-year-old male started to have low-back pain. On X-ray survey, unusual shadows of the right humerus and sacrum were found. An open biopsy confirmed a histological diagnosis of eosinophilic granuloma in the 5th lumbal spine and sacrum, followed by the second biopsy of the same diagnosis on the right humerus. A local radiation therapy was performed with 2 Gy for 3 times on the right humerus, along with low-dose continuous cyclophospamide administration for about 17 months. As to pain and performance status (PS) of the patient, there are complete disapperarance of pain and a marked improvement of PS, producing a great success in the therapy and an excellent social life i.e. a good quality of life (QOL) in the present patient

Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of C/LiMnPO4 CathodeMaterials by Complex Polymerized Method

    Get PDF
C/LiMnPO4 materials were synthesized by the complex polymerized method. An orthorhombic olivine type structure was obtained by calcination at temperatures over 973 K under an argon/hydrogen (5%) atmosphere. Differential thermogravimetric analysis showed that the carbon content of C/LiMnPO4 was about 65 wt%. The initial discharge capacity of C/LiMnPO4 calcined at 973 K was 135 mAh/g at 0.1 C and 60 mAh/g at 1 C
