    Demand for animal products has been increasing rapidly in Bangladesh due to urbanization and increases in per capita income. There are rudimentary indications that demand for improved food quality and safety has also been increasing and that consumers were willing to pay higher prices for such attributes of products. However, there is little empirical evidence on the criteria and indicators of quality and safety that consumers use in their buying decisions, or that suppliers use in differentiating products to promote sales, or the extent to which consumers are willing to pay for such attributes. This study is the first attempt to comprehensively characterize and quantify Bangladeshi urban demand for animal products with a focus on quality and safety. Based on a multi-stage sample survey of 900 households from Dhaka and Mymensingh cities, successive analyses present statements of preference based on ratings, identified quality criteria, stated sources of supply and recent purchasing behaviour both at home and away from home, and econometric analysis of relationships between price ratings and quality ratings across attributes, so as to generate willingness to pay for those attributes. The findings show that officially defined grades and quality standards of livestock products are either absent or poorly defined and enforced. On the other hand, producers and consumers in the market use specific attributes or criteria and indicators to differentiate quality and safety of livestock products and they also charge and pay different prices based on those attributes. Although targeted at urban populations, considerable variation between locations in terms of the product preferences and attributes used to differentiate quality was identified. Establishment of standards and grades will become necessary to meet consumer demand on the one hand and facilitate producers and market agents to respond to consumer demand on the other. Whether smallholders will have any comparative advantage in supplying an expanding market requiring more homogenous and better quality and safer products need to be studied regularly along with studies on consumer demand because of the dynamic nature of the emerging and evolving market, the industry and the sector

    Modeling Neutron Interaction Inside a 2D Reactor Using Monte Carlo Method

    Scientists and engineers have been working for many years to develop accurate approaches to analyzing nuclear power reactors using computer codes that closely model the behavior of neutrons in a reactor core. The Monte Carlo simulation method is capable of treating complex geometries with a high level of resolution and fidelity to model neutron interactions inside a reactor core. With the requirement of accurate modeling in reactor physics and dynamics and great innovation of computer technology, Monte Carlo method is becoming an ever more powerful tool and receiving rising attention. In this study, Monte Carlo method is used to model nuclear interactions between randomly moving neutrons and the fuel material, cladding material and moderator. The code, QualifyingMC, written using Python language develops the neutron diffusion scenario in a two-dimensional car- tesian geometry. To evaluate the performance and accuracy of the simulation, the calcu- lated values of the effective multiplication factor (keff), a key component in characterizing the breeding property of a fission-reactor system, was compared with reference values cal- culated with other codes using the same geometry, materials and boundary conditions. A good agreement within a few percent on multiplication factors was obtained. The neutron flux distribution, another important parameter in a fission-reactor system, as a function of neutron energy is also calculated and compared with the Watt distribution function. A rea- sonable agreement between QualifyingMC and the reference results was obtained

    Characterization of 2S albumin allergenic proteins for anaphylaxis in common buckwheat

    2S albumin (2SA) is responsible for anaphylaxis following consumption of buckwheat in allergic individuals. To reduce allergen incidents, characterization of 2SA polypeptides is prerequisite, thus was analyzed in this study. Of the five 2S albumin genes (g03, g11, g13, g14, and g28), g03 was seemingly non-functional. The g14 content was 3- and 40-fold higher than that of g11/g28 and g13, respectively. The g11/g28 were more processed to a ∼8 kDa band from a 16 kDa band than g14 in seeds, agreeing with that g11/g28 have high similarity with Fag e 8kD. Meanwhile, anti-g13 produced only a single ∼10 kDa band. Modification of g13 and domain exchange between g13 and g14 suggested that the hydrophobicity of the first domain and the nature of some amino acids in g13 contributed, at least in part, to the lower apparent molecular weight of g13 than expected. Thus, g13 might be an unexplored and noteworthy allergen

    World’s Demand for Food and Water: The Consequences of Climate Change

    This study focused on analysis of global food demand and supply situation by 2030 and 2050, water demand-availability, impact of climate change on world water resource, food security and desalination challenges and development opportunities. The population of the world will be 8.6 billion in 2030 and 9.8 billion in 2050; Africa will be the major contributor. World cereal equivalent (CE) food demand is projected to be around 10,094 million tons in 2030 and 14,886 million tons in 2050, while its production is projected to be 10,120 million tons in 2030 and 15,970 million tons in 2050 having a marginal surplus. India and China are capturing large share of global food demand. The developing country will demand more animal origin foods due to income growth in the future. The growth rate of world demand for cereals will decline till 2050. Global water demand is projected to increase by 55% between 2000 and 2050 from 3500 to 5425 km3. Evidence showed that climate change will have adverse impact on world water resources and food production with high degree of regional variability and scarcity. A number of options are suggested for development of global water resource and food production

    2S albumin g13 polypeptide, less related to Fag e 2, can be eliminated in common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) seeds

    2S albumin (g11, g13, g14, and g28) is an important allergen in common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). g13 is hydrophobic, rare in seeds, and may show distinct allergenicity from the others; therefore, we tried to eliminate this protein. Phylogenetic and property distance analyses indicated g13 is less related to g14 (Fag e 2) than g11/g28 is related to g14, particularly in the second domain containing the II and III α-helices. A null allele with a 531 bp insertion in the coding region was found for g13 at an allele frequency of 2 % in natural populations of common buckwheat. The g13_null allele homozygote accumulated no g13 protein. A BLAST search for the 531 bp insertion suggested the insert-like sequence resided frequently in the buckwheat genome, including the self-incompatibility responsible gene ELF3 in Fagopyrum tataricum. The g13_null insert-like sequence could, therefore, help in producing hypoallergenic cultivars, and expand the genetic diversity of buckwheat
