Developing Deaf Interpreters Conference - University of Hamburg, Germany 25th - 26th May 2018In this article we consider the experience of two traditional ‘amateur’ Deaf interpreters working at an international conference within the context of the professionalization of deaf interpreters. We explore the themes raised during interviews of the Deaf and hearing interpreters who worked together at an efsli event. The path to becoming a professional deaf interpreter is often mediated by such capacity building opportunities in countries with limited access to formal training and so we note the dynamics of the teams and the professional reflections of the interpreters. We also draw attention to the attitudinal barriers that deaf interpreters face, which can affect the work of deaf interpreters and the ways in which traditional Deaf interpreters adopt strategies of collegiality and resilience to enable their professionalization

Patterns in the mesoscale distribution of larval fish in the coastal waters of central Greece, an area of high topographic and bathymetric complexity, were analysed using samples collected during two ichthyoplankton surveys in July 1998 and June 1999. Salinities were lower in the eastern (Aegean) part of the study area due to the influence of waters originating from the Black Sea. In this region, larvae of many epipelagic and benthopelagic (typically summer spawning) species were less abundant in June 1999, when waters were significantly cooler, compared to July 1998. Multivariate analyses identified ‘neritic’ and ‘pelagic’ groups of stations dominated by larvae of epipelagic/bethopelagic (typically shelf dwelling) and mesopelagic species. In the west (Ionian Sea), a prominent third group of stations located in the deep and highly enclosed Korinthiakos Gulf was also defined with very high abundances of mesopelagic fish larvae. However, the genera Cyclothone and Vinciguerria that dominated the neighbouring offshore assemblage of the Ionian Sea were absent from this gulf. In the study area, Korinthiakós Gulf ( > 900 m) and North Evoikos ( > 400 m) Gulf comprise unique ‘fjord-like’ ecosystems in the Mediterranean with increased productivity and significantly cooler deep waters compared to adjacent open sea basins.

Numerical Investigation of the Seismic Behavior of Unanchored Steel Tanks with an emphasis on the Uplift Phenomenon

Ground steel storage tanks are widely used in different industries. Regarding the significance of these structures, ensuring the proper performance of such structures in earthquakes needs evaluating their seismic performance. The present study examines the seismic behavior of an unanchored fluid storage system via ABAQUS after validation using an experimental model. Next, the uplift of the bottom sheet is studied using the accelerogram records of the 1940 El Centro and 1994 Northridge earthquakes. The overturning moment time history of the fluid storage system and the maximum overturning moments were obtained to identify their behavior. The results indicated that not bracing storage tanks leads to the uplift phenomenon. Finally, the maximum axial stress of the storage tank shell was compared with the values recommended in the design codes to control the buckling

11th Panhellenic Symposium on Oceanography and Fisheries, Aquatic Horizons : Challenges & Perspectives, 13-17 May 2015, Mytilene, Lesvos island, Greece.-- 11ο Πανελλήνιο Συμπόσιο Ωκεανογραφίας & Αλιείας, Μυτιλήνη, Λέσβος, Ελλάδα.-- 4 pagesThis experimental study aimed to evaluate the direct impact of two distinct pH levels, one “Control” (pHNBS: 8.17) and one “Low pH” (pHNBS: 7.75) on the feeding, respiration and reproductive output of two marine copepods: the calanoid Acartia graniand the cyclopoid Oithonadavisae. Adult copepods collected from laboratory cultures were preconditioned for 4 consecutive days at a dinoflagellate suspension (Akashiwo sanguinea) prepared with filtered sea water preadjusted at the targeted pH values via CO2 bubbling. Water acidification had no direct effect on the examined vital rates for any of the two copepod species. Our results lend support to the generally observed lack of direct influence of the seawater pH decrease projected at the end of the century on the group of copepodsThis work was supported by the project CROA (LS8-1893), implemented within the framework of the «Supporting Postdoctoral Researchers» Action of the >Education and Lifelong Learning> Operational Program (Action’s Beneficiary: General Secretariat for Research and Technology), and was cofinanced by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Greek StatePeer Reviewe

High-strength automotive fasteners need to go through the heat treatment process so that their mechanical properties are achieved, and to be able to withstand higher loads, since they are used mainly in heavy vehicles and the agricultural line. However, as the flow limit of the steel decreases appreciably with increasing temperature, when a part is heated to austenitizing temperature, the simple action of its own weight may cause permanent dimensional deformations that hinder its assembly, even if its properties mechanics are as requested. In this way, the disposition of a load inside a heat treatment furnace is one of the main factors so that distortions do not occur, mainly of thin components. In this sense, the present work aimed to analyze the method of conditioning the pieces in the batch to be treated in a kiln by batches, and their respective mechanical properties achieved. The batch of fasteners with dimensions of 12mm x 300mm was produced in SAE 10B22 steel and subjected to the heat treatment of quenching at 890ºC and tempering at 480ºC using a device to accommodate the parts. Microstructural characterization was performed using optical microscopy, dimensional analysis through warping, and the mechanical properties were evaluated through tensile tests, Rockwell C and Vickers hardness. The results showed that automotive fasteners made of boron steel, thermally treated in a batch oven, obtained the properties of tensile strength and hardness efficient for the requested strength class. Also fully reaching the specifications of the ISO 898-1: 2013 standard, regarding the minimum martensitic transformation and the maximum distortion
