    Significant uncertainties from calibrating overshooting with eclipsing binary systems

    The precise measurement of the masses and radii of stars in eclipsing binary systems provides a window into uncertain processes in stellar evolution, especially mixing at convective boundaries. Recently, these data have been used to calibrate models of convective overshooting in the cores of main sequence stars. In this study we have used a small representative sample of eclipsing binary stars with 1.25M/M<4.21.25 \leq M/\text{M}_\odot < 4.2 to test how precisely this method can constrain the overshooting and whether the data support a universal stellar mass--overshooting relation. We do not recover the previously reported stellar mass dependence for the extent of overshooting and in each case we find there is a substantial amount of uncertainty, that is, the same binary pair can be matched by models with different amounts of overshooting. Models with a moderate overshooting parameter 0.013fos0.0140.013 \leq f_\text{os} \leq 0.014 (using the scheme from Herwig et al. 1997) are consistent with all eight systems studied. Generally, a much larger range of fosf_\text{os} is suitable for individual systems. In the case of main sequence and early post-main sequence stars, large changes in the amount of overshooting have little effect on the radius and effective temperature, and therefore the method is of extremely limited utility.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    A spatial analysis of residential land prices in Belgium : accessibility, linguistic border and environmental amenities

    This paper explores the spatial variation of land prices in Belgium. The originality of the methodology is threefold : (1) to work at the spatial extent of an entire country, (2) to compute several accessibility measures to all jobs and several representations of the environmental amenities and, more importantly, (3) to test the hypothesis that jobs influence land prices only in the same linguistic region. Spatial autocorrelation is accounted for by estimating spatial models. The results show that the linguistic border acts as a strong barrier in the spatial pattern of land prices and that environmental variables have no significant effect at this scale of spatial analysis.land price ; accessibility ; border effect ; environment ; Belgium

    Does the Shape of a Territory Influence the Locations of Human Activities? a Numerical Geography Approach

    This paper aims at showing how far the shape of a studied area influences the results of optimal location-allocation models. Simulations are performed on rectangular toy-networks with an equal number of vertices but with different length/width ratios. The case of merging two such networks into a common market is also considered. We limit our experience to the Simple Plant Location Problem (SPLP) which captures the fundamental trade-off of economic geography between accessibility and economies-of-scales. Results are analysed in terms of locations, allocations and costs. The results help at understanding how far an area (country/region) has larger development problems than others just because of its shape and/or of the way this area is linked within a common market (elongation of the country and length of the common border). Several real world examples are discussed when interpreting of the results.

    Carpooling and employers: a multilevel modelling approach

    Both public policy-makers and private companies promote carpooling as a commuting alternative in order to reduce the number of Single Occupant Vehicle (SOV) users. The Belgian questionnaire Home-To-Work-Travel (HTWT) is used to examine the factors which explain the share of carpooling employees at a worksite. The modal split between carpooling and rail use was also subject of the analysis. The number of observations in the HTWT database (n=7460) makes it possible to use more advanced statistical models: such as multilevel regression models which incorporate, next to the worksite level, also the company and economic sector levels. As a consequence, a more employer-oriented approach replaces the traditional focus of commuting research on the individual. Significant differences in modal split between economic sectors appeared. The most carpool-oriented sectors are construction and manufacturing, while rail transport is more popular in the financial and public sector. Carpooling also tend to be an alternative at locations where rail is no real alternative. Next to this, regular work schedules and smaller sites are positively correlated with a higher share of carpooling employees. Finally, no real evidence could be found for the effectiveness of mobility management measures which promote carpooling. However, most of these measures are classified in the literature as less effective and a case study approach should complete the research on mobility management initiatives

    Distance decay in activity chains analysis. A Belgian case study

    This paper aims at measuring and testing the distance decay effect in activity chains. It enables one to show how far distance constrains the length of the trips and if there are borders effects. Two Belgian data bases are used: one conducted at the national level, the other at a regional level. Statistical tests are conducted for (1) several definitions of the trip and chain, (2) several distance measurements (time or kilometers), (3) several purposes of trips, and (4) different categories of travellers. This exploratory data analysis enables one to gain information about the spatial aspects of the activity chains and to get a better fit in the gravity type models.

    Measuring the effect of node aggregation on community detection

    Many times the nodes of a complex network, whether deliberately or not, are aggregated for technical, ethical, legal limitations or privacy reasons. A common example is the geographic position: one may uncover communities in a network of places, or of individuals identified with their typical geographical position, and then aggregate these places into larger entities, such as municipalities, thus obtaining another network. The communities found in the networks obtained at various levels of aggregation may exhibit various degrees of similarity, from full alignment to perfect independence. This is akin to the problem of ecological and atomic fallacies in statistics, or to the Modified Areal Unit Problem in geography. We identify the class of community detection algorithms most suitable to cope with node aggregation, and develop an index for aggregability, capturing to which extent the aggregation preserves the community structure. We illustrate its relevance on real-world examples (mobile phone and Twitter reply-to networks). Our main message is that any node-partitioning analysis performed on aggregated networks should be interpreted with caution, as the outcome may be strongly influenced by the level of the aggregation.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    Transportation networks and the location of human activities

    The impact of transportation networks on the location of human activities is a surprisingly neglected topic in economic geography. Using the simple plant location problem, this paper investigates such an impact in the case of a few idealized networks. It is seen that a grid network tends to foster a dispersed pattern of activities, while the center of a radial network acts as an attractor. The case of two economies characterized by different network configurations that form a custom union is then analyzed. It is shown that the structural properties of the networks still hold, though some locations are pulled toward the common border. This suggests that no much relocation should be expected within the European Union if the state members endorse similar fiscal and social policies after the formation of the single market.
