    Development of Analytical Models of T- and U-shaped Cantilever-based MEMS Devices for Sensing and Energy Harvesting Applications

    Dynamic-mode cantilever-based structures supporting end masses are frequently used as MEMS/NEMS devices in application areas as diverse as chemical/biosensing, atomic force microscopy, and energy harvesting. This paper presents a new analytical solution for the free vibration of a cantilever with a rigid end mass of finite size. The effects of both translational and rotational inertia as well as horizontal eccentricity of the end mass are incorporated into the model. This model is general regarding the end-mass distribution/geometry and is validated here for the commonly encountered geometries of T- and U-shaped cantilevers. Comparisons with 3D FEA simulations and experiments on silicon and organic MEMS are quite encouraging. The new solution gives insight into device behavior, provides an efficient tool for preliminary design, and may be extended in a straightforward manner to account for inherent energy dissipation in the case of organic-based cantilevers

    Three Histories of Greening and Whiteness in American Cities

The answer to this question provides an essential "historical diagnostic" that can be used to develop an approach to urban ecology which integrates racial and ethnic change into the planning for proposed interventions. In this paper we employ state sequence analysis to analyze the historical trend of greening (including the implementation of new parks, greenways, community gardens, green recreation areas, and nature preserves) between 1975 and 2014 in a sample of nine cities in the United States relative to concentrations of white and non-white residents. We divide the nine cities into three common growth trajectories and separately examine the trends for each growth trajectory. We further illustrate these trends by mobilizing qualitative data from field work in selected neighborhoods to help explain the processes that generate certain key findings in the quantitative data. We find that the relationship between greening and race/ethnicity differs according to city-level growth trajectory. Cities with continuous high and rapid levels of growth in the postwar period have the strongest link between increased greening and whiter populations. Meanwhile, in cities that contracted or had a punctuated growth pattern, non-white areas had a uniformly low level of greening that occurred mostly in recent years. In all, we show how urban growth, greening, and whiteness are inextricably associated qualities of American cities. We argue that understanding this association is essential for development of a race-conscious model for enhancing urban ecosystems

    Seismic oceanography imaging of thermal intrusions in strong frontal regions

    The Naval Research Laboratory and collaborating partners carried out two dedicated seismic oceanography field experiments in two very different strong frontal regions. ADRIASEISMIC took seismic oceanography measurements at the confluence of North Adriatic Dense Water advected along the Western Adriatic Current and Modified Levantine Intermediate Water advected around the topographic rim of the Southern Adriatic basin. ARC12 took seismic oceanography measurements in and around the Agulhas Return Current as it curved northwards past the Agulhas Plateau and interacted with a large anticyclone that had collided with the current. Despite one study focused on coastal boundary currents and the other focused on a major Western Boundary Current extension, the complex horizontal structures seen through seismic imaging are tied to the processes of thermal intrusions and interleaving in both systems. Seismic Oceanography provides a unique capability of tracking the fine-scale horizontal extent of these intrusions

    Belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) create facial displays during social interactions by changing the shape of their melons

    Beluga whales are considered unique among odontocetes in their ability to visibly alter the appearance of their head by changing the shape of the melon, but only anecdotal observations are available to evaluate the use or potential function of these melon shapes. This study of belugas in professionally managed care aimed to establish an ethogram for the repertoire of categorizable melon shapes and then evaluate their potential function as intentional communication signals by determining if they were produced and elaborated during social interactions of varying behavioral contexts while in the line of sight of a recipient. Five different melon shapes were reliably identified in video observations of the primary study population (n = 4) and externally validated in a second aquarium population (n = 51). Among the 2570 melon shapes observed from the primary study subjects, melon shapes occurred 34 × more frequently during social interactions (1.72 per minute) than outside of social interactions (0.05 per minute). Melon shapes occurring during social interactions were performed within the line of sight of a recipient 93.6% of the time. The frequency of occurrence of the different melon shapes varied across behavioral contexts. Elaboration of melon shapes through extended duration and the occurrence of concurrent open mouth displays varied by shape type and across behavioral contexts. Melon shapes seem to function as visual displays, with some characteristics of intentional communication. This ability could yield adaptive benefits to belugas, given their complex social structure and hypothesized mating system that emphasizes pre-copulatory female mate choice
