International instructional systems: social studies
This paper reports on research conducted as part of the International Instructional System Study that explored five subject areas across nine jurisdictions in six high-performing countries. The Study’s overall aim was to understand what, if anything, there is in common in the curricula and assessment arrangements among the high-performing jurisdictions to see if there are aspects of instructional system design that might account, in part, for high performance. This paper focuses on social studies which in most jurisdictions includes elements of history, geography and citizenship and highlights a number of emerging issues. These include the advantages and disadvantages of teaching history and geography separately or within a social studies programme; the extent to which key concepts are embedded within the social studies/history/geography curricula; whether the level of demand should be considered in terms of a generic taxonomy or in terms of subject specific models; how progression might be defined and considerations of an appropriate balance between teacher assessment and external assessment
Estimation of the geophysical properties of the ocean surface using aircraft microwave measurements
An improved model of the effects of sea state on microwave signature has been developed which incorporates the different effects of whitecaps and streaks to define the response of microwave channels to wind speed. This model has been demonstrated to agree with recent measurements. An approximation model has also been incorporated to describe the effects of precipitation on microwave radiation through a computationally rapid routine. The use of these models and a new technique to allow the selection of the most climatologically appropriate D-matrix is demonstrated in the inversion of data collected over the bering Sea. Surface wind speed agrees very well with observations while good results are obtained for integrated water vapor, and liquid water
Knowledge Cartography for Controversies: The Iraq Debate
In analysing controversies and debates—which would include reviewing a literature in order to plan research, or assessing intelligence to formulate policy—there is no one worldview which can be mapped, for instance as a single, coherent concept map. The cartographic challenge is to show which facts are agreed and contested, and the different kinds of narrative links that use facts as evidence to define the nature of the problem, what to do about it, and why. We will use the debate around the invasion of Iraq to demonstrate the methodology of using a knowledge mapping tool to extract key ideas from source materials, in order to classify and connect them within and across a set of perspectives of interest to the analyst. We reflect on the value that this approach adds, and how it relates to other argument mapping approaches
Optimized Coplanar Waveguide Resonators for a Superconductor-Atom Interface
We describe the design and characterization of superconducting coplanar
waveguide cavities tailored to facilitate strong coupling between
superconducting quantum circuits and single trapped Rydberg atoms. For initial
superconductor-atom experiments at 4.2 K, we show that resonator quality
factors above can be readily achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate that
the incorporation of thick-film copper electrodes at a voltage antinode of the
resonator provides a route to enhance the zero-point electric fields of the
resonator in a trapping region that is 40 m above the chip surface,
thereby minimizing chip heating from scattered trap light. The combination of
high resonator quality factor and strong electric dipole coupling between the
resonator and the atom should make it possible to achieve the strong coupling
limit of cavity quantum electrodynamics with this system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The Online Dissemination of Nature–Health Concepts: Lessons from Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Relating to “Nature-Deficit Disorder”
Evidence continues to grow supporting the idea that restorative environments, green exercise, and nature-based activities positively impact human health. Nature-deficit disorder, a journalistic term proposed to describe the ill effects of people's alienation from nature, is not yet formally recognized as a medical diagnosis. However, over the past decade, the phrase has been enthusiastically taken up by some segments of the lay public. Social media, such as Twitter, with its opportunities to gather "big data" related to public opinions, offers a medium for exploring the discourse and dissemination around nature-deficit disorder and other nature-health concepts. In this paper, we report our experience of collecting more than 175,000 tweets, applying sentiment analysis to measure positive, neutral or negative feelings, and preliminarily mapping the impact on dissemination. Sentiment analysis is currently used to investigate the repercussions of events in social networks, scrutinize opinions about products and services, and understand various aspects of the communication in Web-based communities. Based on a comparison of nature-deficit-disorder "hashtags" and more generic nature hashtags, we make recommendations for the better dissemination of public health messages through changes to the framing of messages. Group Chase and Escape
We describe here a new concept of one group chasing another, called "group
chase and escape", by presenting a simple model. We will show that even a
simple model can demonstrate rather rich and complex behavior. In particular,
there are cases in which an optimal number of chasers exists for a given number
of escapees (or targets) to minimize the cost of catching all targets. We have
also found an indication of self-organized spatial structures formed by both
