Exploring Black Clinical Psychologists’ Experiences of Racism and its Discussion at Work and in the Profession.

This research aimed to explore Black Clinical Psychologists’ (BCPs’) experiences of racism and its discussion at work and in the profession. Within this, there was a focus on how they describe and make sense of their experiences, how they feel they are positioned and perceived when racism is discussed, how they navigate conversations about racism and how they think a sense of safety and support could be fostered within these experiences. In line with the critical realist epistemological position, the methodology employed a qualitative design. Data was collected through twelve in-depth semi-structured interviews with clinical psychologists who self-identified as Black and practiced in the UK. Interviews were analysed using an inductive approach to reflexive thematic analysis. Five themes were identified: ‱ “It is what I am”: BCP identity ‱ Whiteness at work ‱ Spotlighting Whiteness; the work of anti-racism ‱ Resistance ‱ “An absolute mess”; what needs to change These themes highlight and provide a narrative of the systemic and systematic processes of Whiteness and the ways in which it manifests in BCPs’ lived experiences. The analyses are discussed in relation to the research question and existing literature. Drawing upon the analyses, recommendations for clinical practice, policy, future research and education and training are made

On exact mappings between fermionic Ising spin glass and classical spin glass models

We present in this paper exact analytical expressions for the thermodynamical properties and Green functions of a certain family of fermionic Ising spin-glass models with Hubbard interaction, by noticing that their Hamiltonian is a function of the number operator only. The thermodynamical properties are mapped to the classical Ghatak-Sherrington spin-glass model while the the Density of States (DoS) is related to its joint spin-field distribution. We discuss the presence of the pseudogap in the DoS with the help of this mapping.Comment: 6 page

Standardization and application of microsatellite markers for variety identification in tomato and wheat

    Get PDF
The present study is part of a EU project that aims to demonstrate the technical viability of STMS markers for variety identification. As examples two important European crop species, tomato and wheat were chosen. Initially, about 30-40 STMS markers were used to identify a set of 20 good markers per crop and to standardise the methodology and the interpretation of the results in different laboratories. Several systems were used for the detection of STMS polymorphisms. The selected STMS markers are being tested on 500 varieties of each species and databases are being constructed. The first comparisons of data generated by the different laboratories revealed a high degree of agreement. The causes of discrepancies between duplicate samples analysed in different laboratories and precautions to prevent them, are discussed

A Theory of Jump Bidding in Ascending Auctions

Jump bidding is a commonly observed phenomenon that involves bidders in ascending auctions submitting bids higher than required by the auctioneer. Such behavior is typically explained as due to irrationality or to bidders signaling their value. We present field data that suggests such explanations are unsatisfactory and construct an alternative model in which jump bidding occurs due to strategic concerns and impatience. We go on to examine the impact of jump bidding on the outcome of ascending auctions in an attempt to resolve some policy disputes in the design of ascending auctions.auction theory, ascending auctions, jump bidding

Large Deviations of the Smallest Eigenvalue of the Wishart-Laguerre Ensemble

We consider the large deviations of the smallest eigenvalue of the Wishart-Laguerre Ensemble. Using the Coulomb gas picture we obtain rate functions for the large fluctuations to the left and the right of the hard edge. Our findings are compared with known exact results for ÎČ=1\beta=1 finding good agreement. We also consider the case of almost square matrices finding new universal rate functions describing large fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
