Descritpion of Exotic Nuclei Using Continuum Shell Model
In weakly bound exotic nuclei, number of excited bound states or narrow
resonances is small and, moreover, they couple strongly to the particle
continuum. Hence, these systems should be described in the quantum open system
formalism which does not artificially separate the subspaces of (quasi-) bound
and scattering states. The Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum provides a
novel approach which solves this problem. Examples of application in sd-shell
nuclei will be presented.Comment: Presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop Brijuni, Pula,

Statistical modeling of biomedical corpora: mining the Caenorhabditis Genetic Center Bibliography for genes related to life span
BACKGROUND: The statistical modeling of biomedical corpora could yield integrated, coarse-to-fine views of biological phenomena that complement discoveries made from analysis of molecular sequence and profiling data. Here, the potential of such modeling is demonstrated by examining the 5,225 free-text items in the Caenorhabditis Genetic Center (CGC) Bibliography using techniques from statistical information retrieval. Items in the CGC biomedical text corpus were modeled using the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model. LDA is a hierarchical Bayesian model which represents a document as a random mixture over latent topics; each topic is characterized by a distribution over words. RESULTS: An LDA model estimated from CGC items had better predictive performance than two standard models (unigram and mixture of unigrams) trained using the same data. To illustrate the practical utility of LDA models of biomedical corpora, a trained CGC LDA model was used for a retrospective study of nematode genes known to be associated with life span modification. Corpus-, document-, and word-level LDA parameters were combined with terms from the Gene Ontology to enhance the explanatory value of the CGC LDA model, and to suggest additional candidates for age-related genes. A novel, pairwise document similarity measure based on the posterior distribution on the topic simplex was formulated and used to search the CGC database for "homologs" of a "query" document discussing the life span-modifying clk-2 gene. Inspection of these document homologs enabled and facilitated the production of hypotheses about the function and role of clk-2. CONCLUSION: Like other graphical models for genetic, genomic and other types of biological data, LDA provides a method for extracting unanticipated insights and generating predictions amenable to subsequent experimental validation
Multi-rendezvous Spacecraft Trajectory Optimization with Beam P-ACO
The design of spacecraft trajectories for missions visiting multiple
celestial bodies is here framed as a multi-objective bilevel optimization
problem. A comparative study is performed to assess the performance of
different Beam Search algorithms at tackling the combinatorial problem of
finding the ideal sequence of bodies. Special focus is placed on the
development of a new hybridization between Beam Search and the Population-based
Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. An experimental evaluation shows all
algorithms achieving exceptional performance on a hard benchmark problem. It is
found that a properly tuned deterministic Beam Search always outperforms the
remaining variants. Beam P-ACO, however, demonstrates lower parameter
sensitivity, while offering superior worst-case performance. Being an anytime
algorithm, it is then found to be the preferable choice for certain practical
applications.Comment: Code available at https://github.com/lfsimoes/beam_paco__gtoc
On Heavy-Quark Free Energies, Entropies, Polyakov Loop, and AdS/QCD
In this paper we explore some of the features of a heavy quark-antiquark pair
at finite temperature using a five-dimensional framework nowadays known as
AdS/QCD. We shall show that the resulting behavior is consistent with our
qualitative expectations of thermal gauge theory. Some of the results are in
good agreement with the lattice data that provides additional evidence for the
validity of the proposed model.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures; v2: comments added, misprints correcte
Substituent position-induced color tunability in polymer light-emitting diodes
We report substituent position-induced color tunability in polymer light-emitting diodes fabricated with poly[2-{2- or 3- or 4-[(3,7-dimethyloctyl)oxy] phenyoxy}-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (DMOPPPV). When the position of the substituent in DMOP-PPV moves to the ortho, meta, and para sites, the corresponding photo- and electroluminescence spectra shift their peaks to a longer wavelength of about 540, 560, and 585 nm, respectively. We ascribe this to the different degree of steric effect in the backbone for each substituent position. As the substituent position is closer to the main chain, the planarity of the backbone is less conserved, thereby reducing the effective conjugated length of the main chain and broadening the pi-pi(*) energy gapopen6
APPLICATION OF CONTRA LEGEM IN JUDGE DECISIONS (Critical Study of Iddah Alimony Rights in Divorce Cases)
The subject of this study is based on article 149 letters (b) Compilation of Islamic law which reads: ex-husband must provide maintenance, maskan, and kiswah to ex-wife during the iddah, unless the ex-wife has been granted talaq bain or nusyuz and is not pregnant. There are two barriers for an ex-wife to earn a living during the period of iddah, namely because the wife is divorced ba'in and or because the ex-wife is nusyuz. In general, the wife filed for divorce in court because she could no longer stand her husband's treatment of her. As a result of the law, if the wife who filed for divorce sues the Court, then the panel of judges will issue a divorce. Unless the husband violates the talaq. In the context of the wife falling into the act of nusyuz, generally as a result of the treatment and conduct of the husband towards the wife. If this is returned to the sound of the law then it will be very felt the injustice received by the wife (ex-wife). This study seeks to find the answer from the formulation of the problem "Why is contra legem important for the judge in deciding the case (inconcritoplaintiff) divorce with the decision of talaq ba'in and or proven in court nusyus wife's arbitrary because of the husband treatment of his wife? Materials and data are obtained by methods library research, the nature of the research is normative research. The goal to be achieved is to provide an alternative solution in providing justice and legal protection to women (ex-wives) who do not get iddah alimony because of filing a lawsuit or nusyus with a theory approach contra legem. Positive law in practice is not sufficiently able to accommodate the legal facts revealed in the Court, in another narrative it can be said that positive law always lags behind social reality. So in the legal system in Indonesia, the judge's ijtihad to deviate and or find the law is accommodated by the principle of Contra legemin order to provide justice and benefits to the community seeking justice, the judge needs to do contra legem. Keywords: Contra Legem; Iddah Livelihood; Divorce Lawsuit; Judge's Decisio
Another weak first order deconfinement transition: three-dimensional SU(5) gauge theory
We examine the finite-temperature deconfinement phase transition of
(2+1)-dimensional SU(5) Yang-Mills theory via non-perturbative lattice
simulations. Unsurprisingly, we find that the transition is of first order,
however it appears to be weak. This fits naturally into the general picture of
"large" gauge groups having a first order deconfinement transition, even when
the center symmetry associated with the transition might suggest otherwise.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

A high-efficiency portable system for insulation condition assessment of wind farm inter-array cables with double-sided partial discharge detection and localisation
Partial discharge (PD) diagnosis is a crucial tool to assess the insulation condition of wind farm cables. Among PD diagnosis techniques, PD localisation is promising as it can provide target maintenance indicators on the insulation weak points of the cables. Accordingly, this paper developed a portable PD detection and location system for wind farm inter-array cables. The system consists of two non-invasive and lightweight testing units, which can be conveniently deployed on an energised cable, enabling highly efficient online PD diagnosis of the widely distributed inter-array cables. The system achieves accurate PD localisation of the energised cable via an improved double-sided travelling wave method. The method exhibits two superior features: the double-sided testing units are accurately synchronised via the joint application of Global Position Systems and a pulse-based interaction process, and a windowed phase difference method is proposed and integrated into the system to robustly estimate the time-of-arrival difference in low signal-to-noise ratio environment. Validation experiments were conducted on both a 10-kV cable in the laboratory and a real 35-kV cable in an on-shore wind farm
