    The strong coupling constant from lattice QCD with N_f=2 dynamical quarks

    We compute ΛMSˉ\Lambda_{\bar{MS}} for two flavors of light dynamical quarks using non-perturbatively O(a)O(a) improved Wilson fermions.     The nucleon mass in N_f=2 lattice QCD: finite size effects from chiral perturbation theory

    In the framework of relativistic SU(2)_f baryon chiral perturbation theory we calculate the volume dependence of the nucleon mass up to and including O(p^4). Since the parameters in the resulting finite size formulae are fixed from the pion mass dependence of the large volume nucleon masses and from phenomenology, we obtain a parameter-free prediction of the finite size effects. We present mass data from the recent N_f=2 simulations of the UKQCD and QCDSF collaborations and compare these data as well as published mass values from the dynamical simulations of the CP-PACS and JLQCD collaborations with the theoretical expectations. Remarkable agreement between the lattice data and the predictions of chiral perturbation theory in a finite volume is found.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures; references added + minor corrections; one more reference added, typo in eq.(25) corrected, additional clarifying remark

    Quenched Hadrons using Wilson and O(a)-Improved Fermion Actions at beta=6.2

    We present the first study of the light hadron spectrum and decay constants for quenched QCD using an O(a)-improved nearest-neighbour Wilson fermion action at \beta=6.2. We compare the results with those obtained using the standard Wilson fermion action, on the same set of 18 gauge field configurations of a 24^3 times 48 lattice. For pseudoscalar meson masses in the range 330-800 MeV, we find no significant difference between the results for the two actions. The scales obtained from the string tension and mesonic sector are consistent, but differ from that derived from baryon masses. The ratio of the pseudoscalar decay constant to the vector meson mass is roughly independent of quark mass as observed experimentally, and in approximate agreement with the measured value.Comment: 11 page

    Effects of non-perturbatively improved dynamical fermions in QCD at fixed lattice spacing

    We present results for the static inter-quark potential, lightest glueballs, light hadron spectrum and topological susceptibility using a non-perturbatively improved action on a 163×3216^3\times 32 lattice at a set of values of the bare gauge coupling and bare dynamical quark mass chosen to keep the lattice size fixed in physical units (1.7\sim 1.7 fm). By comparing these measurements with a matched quenched ensemble, we study the effects due to two degenerate flavours of dynamical quarks. With the greater control over residual lattice spacing effects which these methods afford, we find some evidence of charge screening and some minor effects on the light hadron spectrum over the range of quark masses studied (MPS/MV0.58M_{PS}/M_{V}\ge0.58).     Mechanisms of the reaction pi^-p --> a^0_0(980)n --> p-^0 eta n at high energies

    The main dynamical mechanisms of the reaction πpa00(980)nπ0ηn\pi^-p \rightarrow a^0_0 (980)n \rightarrow \pi^0\eta n at high energies, currently investigated at Serpukhov and Brookhaven, are considered in detail. It is shown that the observed forward peak in its differential cross section can be explained within the framework of the Regge pole model only by the conspiring ρ2\rho_2 Regge pole exchange. The tentative estimates of the absolute πpa00(980)nπ0ηn\pi^-p \rightarrow a^0_0(980)n \rightarrow \pi^0\eta n reaction cross section at Plabπ=18P_{lab}^{\pi^-} = 18 GeV/c are obtained: σ200\sigma\approx200 nb and, in the forward direction, dσ/dt940d\sigma/dt\approx940 nb/GeV2^2. The contribution of the one pion exchange, which is forbidden by GG-parity and which can rise owing to the f00(980)a00(980)f^0_0(980)-a^0_0(980) mixing, is also estimate. A role of the Regge cuts in the non-flip helicity amplitude is briefly examined and a conclusion is made that the contributions of the cuts have to be inessential in comparison with the conspiring ρ2\rho_2 Regge pole exchange.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 2 ps figure

    Matching Dynamics with Constraints

    We study uncoordinated matching markets with additional local constraints that capture, e.g., restricted information, visibility, or externalities in markets. Each agent is a node in a fixed matching network and strives to be matched to another agent. Each agent has a complete preference list over all other agents it can be matched with. However, depending on the constraints and the current state of the game, not all possible partners are available for matching at all times. For correlated preferences, we propose and study a general class of hedonic coalition formation games that we call coalition formation games with constraints. This class includes and extends many recently studied variants of stable matching, such as locally stable matching, socially stable matching, or friendship matching. Perhaps surprisingly, we show that all these variants are encompassed in a class of "consistent" instances that always allow a polynomial improvement sequence to a stable state. In addition, we show that for consistent instances there always exists a polynomial sequence to every reachable state. Our characterization is tight in the sense that we provide exponential lower bounds when each of the requirements for consistency is violated. We also analyze matching with uncorrelated preferences, where we obtain a larger variety of results. While socially stable matching always allows a polynomial sequence to a stable state, for other classes different additional assumptions are sufficient to guarantee the same results. For the problem of reaching a given stable state, we show NP-hardness in almost all considered classes of matching games.Comment: Conference Version in WINE 201

    Hydrodynamic approach to the evolution of cosmological structures

    A hydrodynamic formulation of the evolution of large-scale structure in the Universe is presented. It relies on the spatially coarse-grained description of the dynamical evolution of a many-body gravitating system. Because of the assumed irrelevance of short-range (``collisional'') interactions, the way to tackle the hydrodynamic equations is essentially different from the usual case. The main assumption is that the influence of the small scales over the large-scale evolution is weak: this idea is implemented in the form of a large-scale expansion for the coarse-grained equations. This expansion builds a framework in which to derive in a controlled manner the popular ``dust'' model (as the lowest-order term) and the ``adhesion'' model (as the first-order correction).     "Oh! What a tangled web we weave": Englishness, communicative leisure, identity work and the cultural web of the English folk morris dance scene

    In this paper, we consider the relationship between Englishness and the English folk morris dance scene, considering how the latter draws from and reinforces the former. Englishness is considered within the context of the cultural web; a tool more often applied to business management but linked to a sociological viewpoint here. By doing so, we draw the connections between this structured business model and the cultural identity of Englishness. Then, we use the framework of the cultural web and theories of leisure, culture and identity to understand how morris dancers see their role as dancers and ‘communicative leisure’ agents in consciously defending Englishness, English traditions and inventions, the practices and traditions of folk and morris, and the various symbolic communities they inhabit. We argue that most morris dancers in our research become and maintain their leisured identities as dancers because they are attracted to the idea of tradition – even if that tradition is invented and open to change

    The spin dependence of high energy proton scattering

    Motivated by the need for an absolute polarimeter to determine the beam polarization for the forthcoming RHIC spin program, we study the spin dependence of the proton-proton elastic scattering amplitudes at high energy and small momentum transfer.We examine experimental evidence for the existence of an asymptotic part of the helicity-flip amplitude phi_5 which is not negligible relative to the largely imaginary average non-flip amplitude phi_+. We discuss theoretical estimates of r_5, essentially the ratio of phi_5 to phi_+, based upon extrapolation of low and medium energy Regge phenomenological results to high energies, models based on a hybrid of perturbative QCD and non-relativistic quark models, and models based on eikonalization techniques. We also apply the model-independent methods of analyticity and unitarity.The preponderence of evidence at available energy indicates that r_5 is small, probably less than 10%. The best available experimental limit comes from Fermilab E704:those data indicate that |r_5|<15%. These bounds are important because rigorous methods allow much larger values. In contradiction to a widely-held prejudice that r_5 decreases with energy, general principles allow it to grow as fast as ln(s) asymptotically, and some models show an even faster growth in the RHIC range. One needs a more precise measurement of r_5 or to bound it to be smaller than 5% in order to use the classical Coulomb-nuclear interference technique for RHIC polarimetry. As part of this study, we demonstrate the surprising result that proton-proton elastic scattering is self-analysing, in the sense that all the helicity amplitudes can, in principle, be determined experimentally at small momentum transfer without a knowledge of the magnitude of the beam and target polarization
