    Should sex ratio distorting parasites abandon horizontal transmission?

    BACKGROUND: Sex-ratio distorting parasites are of interest due to their effects upon host population dynamics and their potential to influence the evolution of host sex determination systems. In theory, the ability to distort host sex-ratios allows a parasite with efficient vertical (hereditary) transmission to dispense completely with horizontal (infectious) transmission. However, recent empirical studies indicate that some sex-ratio distorting parasites have retained the capability for horizontal transmission. RESULTS: Numerical simulations using biologically realistic parameters suggest that a feminising parasite is only likely to lose the capability for horizontal transmission if its host occurs at low density and/or has a male-biased primary sex ratio. It is also demonstrated that even a small amount of horizontal transmission can allow multiple feminising parasites to coexist within a single host population. Finally it is shown that, by boosting its host's rate of population growth, a feminising parasite can increase its own horizontal transmission and allow the invasion of other, more virulent parasites. CONCLUSIONS: The prediction that sex-ratio distorting parasites are likely to retain a degree of horizontal transmission has important implications for the epidemiology and host-parasite interactions of these organisms. It may also explain the frequent co-occurrence of several sex-ratio distorting parasite species in nature

    Genomes and geography: genomic insights into the evolution and phylogeography of the genus Schistosoma

    Blood flukes within the genus 'Schistosoma' still remain a major cause of disease in the tropics and subtropics and the study of their evolution has been an area of major debate and research. With the advent of modern molecular and genomic approaches deeper insights have been attained not only into the divergence and speciation of these worms, but also into the historic movement of these parasites from Asia into Africa, via migration and dispersal of definitive and snail intermediate hosts. This movement was subsequently followed by a radiation of Schistosoma species giving rise to the S. mansoni and S. haematobium groups, as well as the S. indicum group that reinvaded Asia. Each of these major evolutionary events has been marked by distinct changes in genomic structure evident in differences in mitochondrial gene order and nuclear chromosomal architecture between the species associated with Asia and Africa. Data from DNA sequencing, comparative molecular genomics and karyotyping are indicative of major constitutional genomic events which would have become fixed in the ancestral populations of these worms. Here we examine how modern genomic techniques may give a more in depth understanding of the evolution of schistosomes and highlight the complexity of speciation and divergence in this group

    Superhigh-frequency characteristics of optical modulators on the basis of InGaAlAs resonance-tunnel heterostructures

    The impedance of InGaAlAs resonance-tunnel heterostructures used for modulation of optical radiation is experimentally studied in the frequency range from 45 to 18 MHz. The dependence of their equivalent circuit on the bias voltage is determined. The spectrum of the harmonics of the current in the resistive frequency multiplication in such structures is calculated. The results confirm that these structures are promising as applied to the frequency multiplication. The effect of frequency multiplication is demonstrated experimentally at low frequencies

    From ocean sprawl to blue-green infrastructure:A UK perspective on an issue of global significance

    Artificial structures are proliferating in the marine environment, resulting in ‘ocean sprawl’. In light of the potential environmental impacts of this, such as habitat loss and alteration, it is becoming increasingly important to incorporate ecologically-sensitive design into artificial marine structures. The principles of eco-engineering and green infrastructure are embedded in urban planning practice for terrestrial and freshwater development projects. In marine planning, however, eco-engineering of blue-green infrastructure remains an emerging concept. This note provides a UK perspective on the progress towards uptake of eco-engineering approaches for enhancing biodiversity on artificial marine structures. We emphasise that, despite a clear ‘policy pull’ to incorporate biodiversity enhancements in marine structures, a range of proof-of-concept evidence that it is possible to achieve, and strong cross-sectoral stakeholder support, there are still few examples of truly and purposefullydesigned blue-green artificial structures in the UK. We discuss the barriers that remain and propose a strategy towards effective implementation. Our strategy outlines a step-wise approach to: (1) strengthening the evidence base for what enhancements can be achieved in different scenarios; (2) improving clarity on the predicted benefits and associated costs of enhancements; (3) packaging the evidence in a useful form to support planning and decision-making; and (4) encouraging implementation as routine practice. Given that ocean sprawl is a growing problem globally, the perspective presented here provides valuable insight and lessons for other nations at their various states of progress towards this same goal

This giant suppression is found to be a signature of the coherent transport regime and can occur near zero temperature as a consequence of the Pauli principle or above about 77 K as a consequence of long range Coulomb interaction. These predictions are validated by experimental data

    Coherent approach to transport and noise in double-barrier resonant diodes

    We implement a quantum approach which includes long range Coulomb interaction and investigate current voltage characteristics and shot noise in double-barrier resonant diodes. The theory applies to the region of low applied voltages up to the region of the current peak and considers the wide temperature range from zero to room temperature. The shape of the current voltage characteristic is well reproduced and we confirm that even in the presence of Coulomb interaction the shot noise can be suppressed with a Fano factor well below the value of 0.5. This feature can be an indication of coherent tunneling since the standard sequential tunneling predicts in general a Fano factor equal to or greater than the value 0.5. This giant suppression is a consequence of Pauli principle as well as long range Coulomb interaction. The theory generalizes previous findings and is compared with experiments

    Abnormal prion protein in the retina of the most commonly occurring subtype of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

    Background: Involvement of the eye has been reported in patients with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), but there is disagreement on whether retinal involvement occurs in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD). Methods: Western blotting, paraffin embedded tissue blotting, and immunohistochemistry were used to test whether the abnormal form of the prion protein (PrP(Sc)) accumulates to detectable levels in the eye in a case of the most common subtype of sCJD (MM1). Results: Low levels of PrP(Sc) were detectable in the retina, localised to the plexiform layers of the central retina. PrP(Sc) was not detectable in other ocular tissues. Conclusions: The abnormal form of the prion protein is present in the retina in the most common sCJD subtype (MM1), albeit at levels lower than those found previously in vCJD and in sCJD of the VV2 subtype

    On the shopfloor: exploring the impact of teacher trade unions on school-based industrial relations

    Teachers are highly unionised workers and their trade unions exert an important influence on the shaping and implementation of educational policy. Despite this importance there is relatively little analysis of the impact of teacher trade unions in educational management literature. Very little empirical research has sought to establish the impact of teacher unions at school level. In an era of devolved management and quasi-markets this omission is significant. New personnel issues continue to emerge at school level and this may well generate increased trade union activity at the workplace. This article explores the extent to which devolved management is drawing school-based union representation into a more prominent role. It argues that whilst there can be significant differences between individual schools, increased school autonomy is raising the profile of trade union activity in the workplace, and this needs to be better reflected in educational management research
