Challenges for Monetary Policy in the Enlarged European Monetary Union

The eastward enlargement of the Euro area entails significant implications for the accession candidates in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the existing Euro system and the monetary policy of the European Central Bank (ECB). The present analysis assesses the challenges and critical aspects in monetary policy modeling with special emphasis to enlargement. The focus is on the difficulty of implementing a unique currency policy in view or growing heterogeneity within the enlarged monetary union, and secondly the issue of the voting mechanism within the ECB. When analyzing those two issues, it is conclusive that the difficulties for the ECB and the current Euro zone members will increase. For the enlarged Euro zone, which is becoming more divergent, it will be very hard to find adequate recipes to meet the needs and requirements of all. The big question is: whether centralisation of monetary policy is a sustainable and superior solution?European Monetary Union, EU enlargement, Monetary policy, ECB reform

Grouping of red clover genotypes based on parameters of chemical quality

Red clover breeding is usually directed at improving productive traits, but recently it is also oriented to the quality traits, including the content and the stability of proteins, content of soluble carbohydrates and digestibility of cell wall. Th e main part of the structural carbohydrates is found in the plant cell walls, and it is defi ned through the concept of fi ber. Th e parameters ADF (acid detergent fi ber) and NDF (neutral detergent fi ber) represent fi ber fractions that are only partially available to animals and which are indicators of the consumption and digestibility of the dry matter. Th e aim of this study was determination of the crude protein, ADF and NDF content for 46 red clover varieties and populations, classifi cation of genotypes based on the estimated quality parameters and selection of the most promising genotypes for further breeding. On the basis of these three parameters, the analyzed red clover genotypes were clearly grouped into two clusters, while one cluster was without subclusters and the another one was composed of two subclusters. Classifi cation of genotypes, as well as group composition based on the analysis of quality parameters, may be important for understanding the variability of genotypes at the quality level and for future breeding programs for quality improvement

Background Menstrual cycle may contribute to experimental pain measures in healthy women and women with chronic pain. Objectives The present study aimed to investigate variation in pulp sensitivity across the menstrual cycle in healthy women and women with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to explore the effect of TMD pain and psychosocial variables on the pulp response. Methods This longitudinal study involved 47 regularly menstruating women aged 20‐45, 24 healthy and 23 with diagnosed painful TMD. The electric and cold stimuli were performed by electric pulp tester and refrigerant spray, respectively, on mandibular lateral incisors, in five menstrual phases (menstrual, follicular, periovulatory, luteal and premenstrual). Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD were used to assess TMD, chronic pain, depression and somatisation. Regression analysis was performed to investigate the effect of the predictor variables on the pulp sensitivity. Results Significant phase‐related differences were observed for pain intensity to cold stimuli. Higher pain sensitivity was reported in menstrual in comparison with luteal phase (P = .019) among healthy women, and in menstrual in comparison with follicular (P = .033), periovulatory (P = .003) and luteal (P = .007) phases in TMD women. No significant differences were recorded for electric stimuli. Regression analysis identified depression as the determinant of cold and electric response in menstrual phase, regardless of age and presence of TMD. Conclusion Menstrual phase in healthy and TMD women with regular menstrual cycle is characterised with higher pulp sensitivity to cold stimuli. Depressive symptoms independently influence pulp response in this phase

Influence of Endodontic Procedure on Postoperative Pain – Evidence from Systematic Reviews

    No full text
Pain control, during and after root canal treatment is one of the important issues in endodontic practice. Occurrence of pain after intervention often presents considerable distress to both patient and dentist. In many studies influence of different endodontic treatment factors on incidence of postoperative pain has been investigated. However, different and inconsistent results between studies and growth in number of published papers each year made professional updating and clinical-decision making challenging. Systematic reviews synthesized and combined data from relevant studies to find the answer to a research question providing the highest level of scientific evidence. Thus, their use may facilitate decision making in clinical practice. The aim of this article was to present results from systematic reviews about the influence of endodontic treatment on postoperative pain
