    Performance Evaluation of Virtualization Tools in Multi-Threaded Applications

    In the last decade, virtualization technologies have become very popular. Virtualization enables a user to run multiple operating systems on the same computer concurrently, while providing a degree of isolation between OS instances. Even though virtualization is mostly used on servers, its popularity on desktop also rises, where it is mostly used in cross-platform development and execution of software available to other platforms. Since both of these use cases are performance intensive, the goal of this paper is to evaluate the performance of a couple of the most popular desktop virtualization tools on the market, i.e., VMWare Player and Oracle VirtualBox. Benchmarks used in this paper evaluate the performance of the tools in both CPU intensive and GPU intensive applications, with special emphasis placed on the performance of multi-threaded applications

    Performance Overhead of Haxe Programming Language for Cross-Platform Game Development

    Video game industry has become the largest entertainment based industry, surpassing both the film and the music industry in terms of revenue. Costs of game development are rising with a number of platforms one has to support. In today’s competitive industry, it is necessary to support as many platforms as possible to remain profitable. One way to cut down on time spent on porting the game to other platforms, is to use cross-platform programming languages and development frameworks. Even though such frameworks allow drastic reduction of development time spent on making sure games work on all intended platforms, they are not without cost. The cost in this case is mainly in reduced performance, compared to games developed in their native development environments. This paper evaluates performance overhead of a relatively new programming language (less than a decade old) called Haxe, which is built especially for cross-platform development. We have implemented the same game in both its native environment and in the Haxe programming language, from which the game is cross-compiled to run in the native environment. The authors tested developed games on three different hardware configurations, with three different complexity settings, and the results show that even though performance overhead of cross-compilation is not insignificant, the overall reduction in development time attained by developing in Haxe presents a viable option for cross-platform game development, with positive aspects outweighing the negatives

    Subject cataloguing in the Collection of Manuscripts and Rare Books in the National and University Library in Zagreb

    Autorica se bavi sadržajnom obradom u Zbirci rukopisa i starih knjiga. Uz tzv. formalnu obradu ili katalogizaciju, sadržajna obrada predstavlja značajan i nezaobilazan dio obrade knjižnične građe, pogotovo ako je riječ o rukopisima. Ponekad je važnije rukopisnu građu obraditi sa sadržajnog, nego s formalnog gledišta. Građa se obrađuje u formatu MARC21. Predmetne odrednice oblikuju se u bloku 6xx prema predmetnom sustavu Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice u Zagrebu. Za obradbu starih i rijetkih knjiga rabe se tezaurusi. Katalogizacija, sadržajna obradba i klasifikacija omogućuju cjelovitost u obradbi rukopisne i knjižne građe od njezina pristizanja u Zbirku pa sve do smještaja na police i davanja na korištenje. Osim klasifikacijskog sustava Nacionalne i sveučilišne knjižnice u Zagrebu, u Zbirci rukopisa i starih knjiga rabi se Univerzalna decimalna klasifikacija.The paper discusses subject analysis in the Manuscripts and Rare Books Collection in the National and University Library in Zagreb. The descriptive cataloguing and subject analysis are two most distinctive aspects of the cataloguing process, especially in cataloguing manuscripts. In some cases the description of the manuscripts content is even more important than formal aspects of cataloguing. The Library uses MARC21 format for cataloguing manuscripts. Subject headings and subheadings are entered in the 6xx block of fields. Thesauri for old and rare books are also being used. Cataloguing, subject analysis and classification represent three important steps in the process which starts with acquiring of manuscripts and books, and ends with placing them on the shelves and making them available to users. Besides the classification system of the National and University Library in Zagreb, the Manuscripts and rare books collection uses Universal Decimal Classification system

    Bibliografski opis ručno tiskanih knjiga sagledan je u komplementarnom odnosu općeg i pojedinačnog. Opći dio opisa zajednički je svim izdanjima jednog djela. S druge strane, pojedinačni dijelovi opisa svojstveni su pojedinačnim primjercima nekog djela. Posebni se bibliografski zapisi mogu izrađivati i za novi otisak, otisak i tiskarsku varijantu. Izdvojena su i analizirana pravila za opis starih omeđenih jedinica građe u skupinama 1, 4, 5 i 7. Pritom su najviše analizirane skupine 1 i 4 jer se u njima izdvaja najveći broj propisa ISBD-a za opis stare omeđene građe. Neka su pravila u pojedinim skupinama ISBD-a sagledana u odnosu na pravila prethodnih skupina. Posebna je pozornost posvećena redoslijedu izvora podataka koji se preuzimaju u opis. U radu se također ističu pojedinosti koje su značajne za opis starih omeđenih jedinica građe (transkripcija, kratice, dvostruka interpunkcija) koje su samo djelomično uključene u ISBD ili uopće nisu dio ISBD-a.The paper presents an overview of the bibliographic description of hand press books as seen and analyzed through a complementary relationship between the general and the specific. The general part of the description is common for all editions of an individual work. On the other hand, the specific part of the description is correlated to the particular copies of one work. Also, separate bibliographic descriptions could be created for different issues, impressions, and states of older monographic resources. The areas 1, 4, 5, and 7 of the bibliographic description are singled out and certain peculiarities of the stipulations regarding old monographic resources are analyzed. The most extensively analyzed areas are 1 and 4 since they contain the largest number of ISBD stipulations for the description of older monographic resources. In the analyses certain ISBD stipulations from one area were compared to the stipulations from other areas of bibliographic description. Special attention was given to the order of bibliographic data taken from the sources. In some cases the whole resource could be used as the prescribed source of information for all areas of bibliographic description. The peculiarities of older monographic resources such as transcription, abbreviations and double punctuation are also analyzed. They are only partially included, or in some cases not at all, in the consolidated edition of ISBD

    Autorica se bavi opisivanjem rukopisa i inkunabula u dvama sustavima. Jedan je format za strojno čitljive kataloge (MARC), a drugi se sustav zasniva na XMLu. Analiziraju se njihove prednosti i nedostaci. Postoje pomagala pomoću kojih se MARC format konvertira u XML.The paper deals with the principles of the manuscript and incunabula bibliographic description in two different systems. The first one is based on MARC format, while the second one is based on the Markup Language. The author discusses their advantages and disadvantages. Also, the tools which convert MARC format into the XML system are presented

    Protestantski teolog, filolog, filozof i povjesničar Matija Vlačić Ilirik (1520–1575) većinu je života proveo mijenjajući mjesta boravka izvan rodnog Labina. Zarana prihvativši protestantski nauk, odlazi u zemlje njemačkoga govornog područja, gdje se školuje i poučava na protestantskim sveučilištima. Za boravka u Magdeburgu (1549–1556) i Regensburgu (1562–1566) Vlačić je napisao i dovršio svoja najznačajnija djela. Ne postoji cjelovita bibliografija njegovih djela, no smatra se da je napisao više od 200 naslova koji su tiskani na latinskom i njemačkom u europskim tiskarskim središtima (Basel, Magdeburg, Frankfurt, Leipzig). Prvo Vlačićevo tiskano djelo bila je filološka rasprava koja je pod naslovom De vocabulo fidei objavljena 1555. Iste godine na hrvatskom je tiskana rasprava Rasgovarange megiu papistu, i gednim luteran, koju je Vlačić objavio pod pseudonimom Anton Segnianin. Četiri kapitalna djela Matije Vlačića Ilirika tiskana su u folio formatu. Godine 1556. tiskano je prvo izdanje povijesnog djela Catalogus testium veritatis. Prvo izdanje Vlačićeva egzegetskog djela objavljeno je 1567. pod naslovom Clavis Scripturae Sacrae seu De sermone Sacrarum literarum. Vlačićevo djelo o tumačenju Novog zavjeta objavljeno je 1570. pod dvojezičnim naslovom Tῆς τοῦ υἱοῦ θεοῦ καινῆς διαθήκης ἅπαντα = Novum Testamentum Iesu Christi filii, ex versione Erasmi, innumeris in locis ad Graecam veritatem, genuinumque sensum emendata. Glossa compendiaria M. Matthiae Flacii Illyrici Albonensis in Novum Testamentum. Od 1559. do 1574. tiskar Johann Oporin u Baselu je objavio opsežno Vlačićevo djelo u osam svezaka kojemu je naslov Historia ecclesiastica ili Centuriae Magdeburgenses.Matthias Flacius Illyricus spent most of his life moving from one European city to another, teaching at protestant universities and spreading new doctrine. He accepts Luther’s doctrine in early youth and spends almost whole life in German-speaking area. After Luther’s death Flacius consistently defends his doctrine opposing his former teacher Philipp Melanchthon. While residing in Magdeburg (1549–1556) and Regensburg (1562–1566) Flacius wrote and finished most of his prominent works. Matthias Flacius Illyricus is an author of more than 200 bibliographic units published in Latin and German in different printing centres all over Europe (Basel, Magdeburg, Frankfurt, Leipzig). His first work, philological treatise De vocabulo fidei was printed in 1555. The same year as De vocabulo fidei was printed his treatise Rasgovarange megiu papistu, i gednim luteran. Flacius published it under the pseudonym Anton Segnianin. There are four capital Flacius’ works which ought to be mentioned, all printed in folio bibliographic format. First of them, historical survey entitled Catalogus testium veritatis, was printed in 1556. Flacius’s exegetic work on the Holy Scripture entitled Clavis Scripturae Sacrae seu De sermone Sacrarum literarum was published in 1567. Then followed Flacius’ work on Geert’s Latin translation of the New Testament was published in 1570. with bilingual title Тῆς του ὑιου θεοῦ καινῆς διαθήκης ἅπαντα = Novum Testamentum Iesu Christi filii, ex versione Erasmi, innumeris in locis ad Graecam veritatem, genuinumque sensum emendata. Glossa compendiaria M. Matthiae Flacii Illyrici Albonensis in Novum Testamentum. Work on Church history which comprises the first thirteen centuries was printed between 1559 and 1574. Flacius applied philological and grammatical method in studying the Holy Scripture instead of previous philosophical and theological method.     Kompresija slike korištenjem B-tree algoritma kodiranja poboljšan modeliranjem podataka Burrows-Wheeler transformacijom

    The paper shows that the partial differential based compression framework, Edge Enhancing Diffusion Compression (EEDC) on high compression ratios can come close to or even be better than present compression standard - JPEG2000 thus presenting a novel method for image compression. In this paper EEDC will be enhanced by changing its data coding, i.e. Huffman coding will be changed with an entropy coder accompanied with Burrows-Wheeler transformation and context mixing. Images, graphs and tables show image compression results. The purpose of this article is to examine the effectiveness of the PDEs in image compression and to evaluate it by comparing to cosine and wavelet transform based compression methods.Ovaj rad pokazuje kako je kompresija temeljena na parcijalnim diferencijalnim jednadžbama, tj. EEDC na velikom stupnju kompresije dovoljno dobra ili čak bolja od trenutačnog kompresijskog standarda - JPEG2000 time predstavljajući novu metodu kompresije slika. U ovom radu EEDC je poboljšan tako da je promijenjeno kodiranje podataka svjetline slike, tj. Huffmanovo kodiranje je zamijenjeno entropijskim koderom i Burrows-Wheeler transformacijom s miješanjem konteksta. Slike, grafovi i tablice prikazuju rezultate kompresije slika. Svrha ovog rada je ispitati efikasnost parcijalnih diferencijalnih jednadžbi u kompresiji slike te ju usporediti metodama kompresije koje su bazirane na kosinusnoj i wavelet transformaciji
