    Estimating Delay of Vehicles in Nearside Legs of the Signalized Intersections under Expectation Method in Under-Saturation Conditions for Isolated Intersection

    Signalized intersections are essential elements of road transport in cities, thus providing condition in which these key elements have optimal performance in different traffic conditions has always been a concern for traffic engineers. Normally, Average vehicle control delay (delay due to the presence of traffic lights) is used as performance indicators on signalized intersections that is estimated using a lot of equations, including the Webster, Green Shields and the equation described in the book "Highway Capacity Manual". But in these equations no place is include for the distribution of vehicles on the routes leading to the signalized intersections. Ignoring this issue could lead to a false estimate of the average amount of delay on the signalized intersections because of the type of their entrance resulting in inefficient operation of the intersection. Using Expectation Method, this paper proposes a better estimate of the amount of delay on the vehicles in signalized intersections, depending on frequency of entrance to the intersection. In the end it will be found out that different frequency distribution of vehicles at nearside legs of intersection lead to different delay estimates of vehicles

    A study on influencing factors on brand loyalty: A case study of Mobile industry

    Brand loyalty plays essential role on product development especially in mobile industry. In this paper, we present an empirical survey to study the effects of different factors including brand associate, brand awareness, distribution intensity and quality perception on brand loyalty. The proposed model of this paper is examined by designing a questionnaire consists of 16 questions in Likert scale and distributing it among 200 people who use a particular brand in mobile industry called Nokia. The results are analyzed using structural equation modeling where Cronbach alpha is calculated as 0.84. The results indicate that there is a positive relationship between perception quality as well as brand awareness and brand loyalty. In addition, there is a positive relationship between brand awareness and perception quality

    Remote sensing for crop residue cover recognition: A review

    Nowadays, using of conservation tillage instead of conventional tillage has been changing attitudes from conventional agriculture to sustainable agriculture. The tillage method affects directly soil and water quality. Actions relative to optimized agricultural management such as conservation tillage methods has adopted at recent years by agronomists and agricultures, due to agricultural and environment advantages. These advantages consist of soil and water quality improving, wind and water erosion prevention, evaporation reduction, soil surface temperature reduction, greenhouse gases reduction, fuel consumption reduction, and etc. In conversation tillage, more than 30% agricultural production residues remain on the ground. For evaluation of residues cover in the fields, information of crop residue obtain from line-transect method. This method has great accuracy, but it is very time consuming and costly for large areas. Remote sensing using satellite information processing can help the researchers to gather the data from the field and the extraction the information. Tillage indices and textural features are two most applicable approach in remote sensing crop residue cover assessment. The aim of this paper was to study of conservation tillage advantages and remote sensing methods to residue cover crop measurement at vast regions through satellite imagery.

    The correlation between total antioxidant capacity and nitric oxide concentration in seminal plasma with sperm DNA damage

    Sperm DNA quality is important in male fertility. Oxidative stress increases sperm DNA damages. Antioxidants decrease production of free radicals and scavenge them. Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical which is produced by most cells and has a dual role on cells. Low concentrations of NO is essential in biology and physiology of systems but high level of NO has a detrimental effect on cells. The aim of this study was to determine the role of the nitric oxide concentration and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in seminal plasma with sperm DNA damage. Semen samples from 45 infertile men and 70 normozospermic men were examined for DNA damage, nitric oxide concentration and TAC. DNA damage was measured by comet assay and nitric oxide concentration was evaluated by Griess assay. TAC was measured in seminal plasma based on the generation of peroxyl radicals from 2,2-azinobis (2-amidino propane) dihydrochlorid (AAPH). Our results show that the means of DNA damage and nitric oxide concentration in infertile men was higher than fertile men. TAC level in infertile men was significantly lower than fertile men. DNA damage was significantly correlated with nitric oxide concentration in infertile men (p = 0.001, r = +0.598) and TAC (p = 0.04, r = - 0.3) in infertile men.     20-Day Trend of Serum Potassium Changes in Bam Earthquake Victims with Crush Syndrome; a Cross-sectional Study

    Introduction: Many of those who survive following an earthquake die in the next phase due to preventable and treatable medical conditions such as hyperkalemia. The present study aimed to evaluate the trend of potassium changes in crush syndrome patients of Bam earthquake. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, using the database of Bam earthquake victims, which were developed by Iranian Society of Nephrology following Bam earthquake, Iran, 2003, the 20-day trend of potassium changes in > 15 years old crush syndrome patients was evaluated. Results: 135 crush syndrome patients with the mean age of 29.9 ± 9.91 years were evaluated (56.3% male). Mean potassium concentration during the first 3 days of admission was 5.6 ± 1.3 mEq/L. On the day of admission, 43.1% (95% CI: 34.0 - 52.2) had normal potassium concentration, 3.4% (95% CI: 0.1 - 6.8) had hypokalemia, and 53.4% (44.3 - 62.6) had hyperkalemia. During 20-day follow-up, 62.3% (95% CI: 66.7-71.9) of the patients had normal potassium. While, 11.5% (95% CI: 9.7-13.3) had hypokalemia and 19.2% (95% CI: 17.0-21.5) had hyperkalemia. As the days of hospitalization increased, prevalence of hyperkalemia decreased while hypokalemia increased. On the 17th day 21.2% (95% CI: 2.2-39.9) had hypokalemia and 10.5% (95% CI: 0.1 – 24.7) had hyperkalemia. Conclusion: Findings of the present study showed that following urine alkalinization and fluid resuscitation, the prevalence of hyperkalemia reduced, but hypokalemia developed. It seems that the correction of serum potassium level should be accompanied by precise monitoring of intake and output of the patient and prescription of reasonable amount of intravenous fluid

    Trends of Serum Electrolyte Changes in Crush syndrome patients of Bam Earthquake; a Cross sectional Study

    Introduction: Electrolyte imbalances are very common among crushed earthquake victims but there is notenough data regarding their trend of changes. The present study was designed to evaluate the trend of changesin sodium, calcium, and phosphorus ions among crush syndrome patients. Methods: In this retrospectivecross-sectional study, using the database of Bam earthquake victims, which was developed by Iranian Society ofNephrology following Bam earthquake, Iran, 2003, the 10-day trend of sodium, calcium, and phosphorus ionschanges in > 15 years old crush syndrome patients was evaluated. Results: 118 patients with the mean age of25.6 § 6.9 yearswere studied (57.3 male). On the first day of admission, 52.5% (95% CI: 42.7 - 62.3) of the patientshad hyponatremia, which reached 43.9% (95% CI: 28.5 - 59.3) on day 10. 100.0% of patients were hypocalcemicon admission and serum calcium level did not change dramatically during the 10 days of hospitalization. Theprevalence of hyperphosphatemia on the first day was 90.5% (95% CI: 81.5 - 99.5) and on the 10th day of hospitalization66.7% (95% CI: 48.5 - 84.8) of the patients were still affected. Conclusion: The results of the presentstudy shows the 52.5%prevalence of hyponatremia, 100% hypocalcemia, and 90.5% hyperphosphatemia amongcrush syndrome patients of Bam earthquake victims on the first day of admission. Evaluation of 10-day trendshows a slow decreasing pattern of these imbalances as after 10 days, 43.9% still remain hyponatremic, 92.3%hypocalcemic, and 66.7% hypophosphatemic

    Prevalence of Compartment Syndrome and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation following Rhabdomyolysis; a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis (RM) may cause some complications such as compartment syndrome and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), which can affect its prognosis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the prevalence of the mentioned complications following RM. Methods: Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched using keywords related to compartment syndrome, DIC, and rhabdomyolysis with appropriate combination. Cohort and cross-sectional studies that conducted research on the prevalence of compartment syndrome and DIC in patients with RM were included in the present study. The desired data were extracted from the included studies and meta-analysis was conducted on them to calculate pooled prevalence of these complications. Results: Twenty articles were included in our systematic review. The rate of compartment syndrome reported in these studies ranged from 0 to 30.7%. Our meta-analysis revealed the pooled prevalence of 4% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.20 to 7.40) for compartment syndrome in these studies. The pooled prevalence of this complication was 7.1% (95% CI: 2.90 to 16.00) among patients with severe RM and 4.4% (95% CI: 1.80 to 10.00) in traumatic RM. The rate of DIC reported in the included studies ranged from 0 to 40.47%. Our meta-analysis showed the pooled prevalence of 8.3% (95% CI: 03.90 to 16.50) for this complication among RM patients. Conclusion: We reported the rates of compartment syndrome and DIC in RM patients based on rhabdomyolysis etiologies through an epidemiologic systematic review and meta-analysis. The rate of compartment syndrome was slightly higher in patients with severe RM and its rate in patients with traumatic RM was close to the overall rate of compartment syndrome.

    Quality of life in patients with breast cancer before and after diagnosis: an eighteen months follow-up study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Measuring quality of life in breast cancer patients is of importance in assessing treatment outcomes. This study examined the impact of breast cancer diagnosis and its treatment on quality of life of women with breast cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was a prospective study of quality of life in breast cancer patients. Quality of life was measured using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and its breast cancer supplementary measure (QLQ-BR23) at three points in time: baseline (pre diagnosis), three months after initial treatment and one year after completion of treatment (in all 18 months follow-up). At baseline the questionnaires were administered to all suspected identified patients while both patients and the interviewer were blind to the final diagnosis. Socio-demographic and clinical data included: age, education, marital status, disease stage and initial treatment. Repeated measure analysis was performed to compare quality of life differences over the time.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In all, 167 patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The mean age of breast cancer patients was 47.2 (SD = 13.5) years and the vast majority (82.6%) underwent mastectomy. At eighteen months follow-up data for 99 patients were available for analysis. The results showed there were significant differences in patients' functioning and global quality of life at three points in time (P < 0.001). Although there were deteriorations in patients' scores for body image and sexual functioning, there were significant improvements for breast symptoms, systematic therapy side effects and patients' future perspective (P < 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings suggest that overall breast cancer patients perceived benefit from their cancer treatment in long-term. However, patients reported problems with global quality of life, pain, arm symptoms and body image even after 18 months following their treatments. In addition, most of the functional scores did not improve.</p

    Renal Function and Risk Factors of Moderate to Severe Chronic Kidney Disease in Golestan Province, Northeast of Iran

    Introduction: The incidence of end-stage renal disease is increasing worldwide. Earlier studies reported high prevalence rates of obesity and hypertension, two major risk factors of chronic kidney disease (CKD), in Golestan Province, Iran. We aimed to investigate prevalence of moderate to severe CKD and its risk factors in the region. Methods: Questionnaire data and blood samples were collected from 3591 participants (≥18 years old) from the general population. Based on serum creatinine levels, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was estimated. Results: High body mass index (BMI) was common: 35.0 of participants were overweight (BMI 25-29.9) and 24.5 were obese (BMI ≥30). Prevalence of CKD stages 3 to 5 (CKD-S3-5), i.e., GFR &lt;60 mL/min/1.73 m2, was 4.6. The odds ratio (OR) and 95 confidence interval (95 CI) for the risk of CKD-S3-5 associated with every year increase in age was 1.13 (1.11- 1.15). Men were at lower risk of CKD-S3-5 than women (OR = 0.28; 95 CI 0.18-0.45). Obesity (OR = 1.78; 95 CI 1.04-3.05) and self-reported diabetes (OR = 1.70; 95 CI 1.00-2.86), hypertension (OR = 3.16; 95 CI 2.02-4.95), ischemic heart disease (OR = 2.73; 95 CI 1.55-4.81), and myocardial infarction (OR = 2.69; 95 CI 1.14-6.32) were associated with increased risk of CKD-S3-5 in the models adjusted for age and sex. The association persisted for self-reported hypertension even after adjustments for BMI and history of diabetes (OR = 2.85; 95 CI 1.77-4.59). Conclusion: A considerable proportion of inhabitants in Golestan have CKD-S3-5. Screening of individuals with major risk factors of CKD, in order to early detection and treatment of impaired renal function, may be plausible. Further studies on optimal risk prediction of future end-stage renal disease and effectiveness of any screening program are warranted. © 2010 Najafi et al
