Breve nota acerca de simúlidos colombianos

Durante corta permanencia en la ciudad de Cali, Colombia (1.000 mts. Alt.) 4 de junio de 1946, tuvimos oportunidad de colectar a orillas del rio Cauca a su paso par la prospera capital del Departamento del Valle, ejemplares de Simúlidos al estado de pupa en las inmediaciones del parque donde la admiración conciudadana ha erigido un busto al escritor Jorge Isaacs Iragorri. Pudimos, no obstante las pocas facilidades de que disponíamos, obtener par cría adultos que facilitaron el estudio completo de los ejemplares en referencia, que permitió clasificarlos como Simulium (E) lutzianus

Histological and microbiological aspects of actinomycetoma cases in Venezuela

A ten year (1976-1986) review study of cases of Actinomycetoma in Venezuela was made through personal interview and clinical examinations, analysis of medical records of patients with actinomycetoma, histological studies of biopsy samples, as well as microbiological studies of isolates strain, also through out personal interviews with researchers and dermatologists who were sources of information on mycetoma cases. A total of 47 cases were recorded. As etiologic agent Actinomadura madurae was found in 20 cases - (42.5%), Nocardia brasiliensis in 13 cases (27.6%), Nocardia spp 7 cases (14.8%), Streptomyces somaliensis in 4 cases (8.5%), N. asteroides in 2 cases (4.2%) and N. otitidis caviarum, (N. caviae) in 1 case (2.1%). Most of the reported cases involved individuals living and working in rural areas, mostly males who outnumber females 4:1. The patients were 18 to 80 years old. A. madurae was reported as the most frequent etiologic agent. Most of the clinical cases were seen when the disease was well established. Twenty four of the forty seven cases reported were observed in Lara State, which represents a 51.0% of all the cases studied

Fuimos 257 jóvenes que un 21 de agosto de 1962 recibimos el título de Médico Cirujano de manos del Rector Francisco De Venanzi. Nuestra Promoción tomó el nombre de Centenario Luis Razetti, en honor a uno de los fundadores de la Academia

Continuous property measurement techniques and physics based mathematical model for frost growth control

The development of a new set of frost property measurement techniques to be used in the control of frost growth and defrosting processes in refrigeration systems was investigated. Holographic interferometry and infrared thermometry were used to measure the temperature of the frost-air interface, while a beam element load sensor was used to obtain the weight of a deposited frost layer. The proposed measurement techniques were tested for the cases of natural and forced convection, and the characteristic charts were obtained for a set of operational conditions. An improvement of existing frost growth mathematical models was also investigated. The early stage of frost nucleation was commonly not considered in these models and instead an initial value of layer thickness and porosity was regularly assumed. A nucleation model to obtain the droplet diameter and surface porosity at the end of the early frosting period was developed. The drop-wise early condensation in a cold flat plate under natural convection to a hot (room temperature) and humid air was modeled. A nucleation rate was found, and the relation of heat to mass transfer (Lewis number) was obtained. It was found that the Lewis number was much smaller than unity, which is the standard value usually assumed for most frosting numerical models. The nucleation model was validated against available experimental data for the early nucleation and full growth stages of the frosting process. The combination of frost top temperature and weight variation signals can now be used to control the defrosting timing and the developed early nucleation model can now be used to simulate the entire process of frost growth in any surface material

En todas las instancias, excepto muy pocas, el cirujano oncólogo pediatra está involucrado con estos pacientes, ya sea para obtener una biopsia del tumor oganglio para diagnóstico, intentar una extirpación total del mismo o finalmente realizar operaciones paliativas o segundas operaciones en niños con tumores inoperables
