Proximate characterization and lycopene determination in bitter melon seed aril

Bitter melon aril is the mucilage covering the fruit\u27s seeds which could contain beneficial dietary ingredients. The bright red color of bitter melon aril suggests that it could contain lycopene. The purpose of this study was to determine the proximate composition of bitter melon aril and to explore this material as a potential rich source of lycopene that has health benefits. Bitter melon aril from Sri Lanka, harvested in Arkansas, USA in 2005, 2006, and 2007 was analyzed. An investigation to develop an extraction method for lycopene from bitter melon was performed using liquid-liquid and a polar liquid extraction. The compositional analysis included determination of moisture, ash, lipid, protein, starch, soluble dietary fiber, insoluble dietary fiber, and mineral content. The proximate characterization of bitter melon aril revealed that it is high in starch with concentrations ranging from 31.4 to 40.3 g/100g. Bitter melon aril had an average of 9.3% soluble fiber, insoluble fiber and protein content individually with no significant difference between harvest seasons. The lipid content was determined to be between 1.7 - 3.1 g/100g of BMAF and had significance differences among harvest seasons. The ripe fruit\u27s aril has major mineral content in potassium, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium and sulfur. The lycopene content was linearly correlated to spectrophotometric absorbance at 476nm. Proyecto Final de Graduación (Licenciatura en Ingeniería en Construcción) Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción, 2020Quality control in an infrastructure project occurs before, during or after an activity is executed, so it is important that the planning, monitoring and quality control to be in accordance with the physical progress of the project. The objective of this project was to design a manual for quality control of materials and systems for healthcare buildings that are currently being developed by costarrican health institutions administrator, known as CCSS. The electrical system isn’t part of the scope of this project. The results of this project consist of four parts: A manual that contains the minimum quality requirements that materials and systems must meet for a healthcare building project developed by CCSS. An MS Excel file that allows the planning, monitoring and control of tests and quality specifications of materials and systems. The third and fourth part is a graphic user interface and its respective user manual that simplifies the use of the MS Excel file and allows the user to register, search and generate quality control information of the different healthcare building projects that they want. From the development of the project, it is concluded that there is a large number of tests and quality specifications of materials and systems that are dispersed in different bibliographic sources, different procedures and therefore it is difficult to consult all of them, making an integrated manual for the management of the tests useful to facilitate the planning monitoring and control of the quality tests as well as their consultation and to help update them later or in real time.El control de calidad en un proyecto de construcción ocurre antes, durante o después de ejecutada una actividad, por eso es importante que la planificación, seguimiento y control de calidad sean de acuerdo con el avance físico de la obra. El objetivo de este proyecto fue realizar el diseño de un manual para control de calidad de materiales y sistemas en edificios de salud de la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS). El área eléctrica no forma parte del alcance de este proyecto. Los resultados de este proyecto consisten en cuatro partes: Un manual que contiene los requisitos mínimos de calidad que deben cumplir los materiales y sistemas para un proyectos de construcción de edificios de salud de la CCSS. Un archivo de MS Excel que permite la planificación, seguimiento, así como control de las pruebas y especificaciones de calidad de los materiales y sistemas. La tercera y cuarta parte es una herramienta digital y su respectivo manual de usuario que facilita el uso del archivo de MS Excel y le permite al usuario registrar, buscar y generar información de control de calidad de los diferentes proyectos de construcción de edificios de salud que desee. Del desarrollo de proyecto se concluye que existe gran cantidad de pruebas y especificaciones de calidad de materiales y sistemas que están dispersas en diferentes fuentes bibliográficas, diferentes procedimientos y por tanto es difícil el seguimiento de todas ellas por lo que un manual integrado para la gestión de las pruebas llega a facilitar la planeación seguimiento y control de las pruebas así como su consulta y actualización posterior o en tiempo real
