    Kirven and King Ranch Field Day

    The second annual Kirven and King Ranch Field Day is being held near Waxahachie, Texas. Pictured left to right are J. I. King and J. D. Kirven. They are partners in the breeding of the Herefords at the ranch. They changed their farm program and took up raising cattle. Now they make more money from cattle than off the 2,000 acres of farmland. More than 500 people are attending the field day. A number of friends and family members are in attendance to see the cattle, pastures, and barns. Mr. King is dressed in a hat, suit, and a coat.     Camp Bowie Army maneuvers. First Platoon of Troop C, 113th Cavalry is pictured here. One of the first brushes occurred when this 113th Cavalry, was chased into woods by a superior force and became lost near Mullen, Texas. The platoon is shown here emerging from its temporary refuge. The cavalry is an Iowa National Guard unit attached to VIII Army Corps. A mechanized unit of the 113th ran into heavy artillery fire and was chased as far as Comanche. The unit is on horseback, dressed in uniforms. There appear to be 16 men total, a couple are smiling at the camera but most are expressionless. They are riding along a dirt road in the grass.     Here is Snooks, a nine-year-old white horse and his owner, Grady Blue, manager of the S. B. Cantey Estate ranch near Palo Pinto in action. This pair has won the championship in the cutting horse contest at the Texas Cowboy Reunion at Stamford in 1940, at Mineral Wells and Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show at Fort Worth in 1941 and 1942. Here is a dogie that is cut out. Snooks, with his bridle removed, goes about his work with but one thought in mind, that is, keeping that dogie from the herd. Grady Blue is mounted on Snooks.
