The implementation of technical energy efficiency measures in shipping (MEPC 69/INF.8)

    Get PDF
This document focuses on the implementation of technical energy efficiency measures. The data are derived from a cross-sectional survey of 275 shipowners and operators covering around 5,000 ships. This is an important undertaking given that very little data exists on the take-up of energy efficiency technologies for both, newly built and existing ship

Shipboard Crisis Management: A Case Study.

    Get PDF
The loss of the "Green Lily" in 1997 is used as a case study to highlight the characteristics of escalating crises. As in similar safety critical industries, these situations are unpredictable events that may require co-ordinated but flexible and creative responses from individuals and teams working in stressful conditions. Fundamental skill requirements for crisis management are situational awareness and decision making. This paper reviews the naturalistic decision making (NDM) model for insights into the nature of these skills and considers the optimal training regimes to cultivate them. The paper concludes with a review of the issues regarding the assessment of crisis management skills and current research into the determination of behavioural markers for measuring competence

Analysis of harmonics in subsea power transmission cables used in VSC-HVDC transmission systems operating under steady-state conditions

    Get PDF
Subsea power cables are a critical component of a voltage-source converter-high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system in any offshore electrical power scheme. Subsea cables have complicated structures consisting of many different layers: conductor, insulation, sheath, and armor. Harmonic performance of the system depends upon the interactions between the subsea cable, the power converters, and other system components, such as smoothing capacitors. In this paper, a mathematical model of an HVDC-VSC transmission system is developed and its harmonic performance is investigated for steady-state operating conditions. The results suggest that the design of the subsea transmission cable has important effects on harmonic levels in the voltage and current waveforms in the cable and upon power loss within the transmission system. This paper demonstrates that it is always important to consider interactions between all of the system components when predicting harmonic performance in a VSC-HVDC transmission system

On the importance of antifouling coatings regarding ship resistance and powering

    Get PDF
This paper aims to introduce one of the latest investigations on development of marine antifouling coatings and also to demonstrate the importance of the type of antifouling coatings on fouling accumulation and ship resistance/powering. First, marine biofouling and fouling prevention methods are reviewed. A recent research study (EU FP7 FOUL-X-SPEL Project) concerning a novel and environmentally friendly antifouling coating is presented and discussed. Next, a case study is carried out to assess the effect of fouling on ship resistance and powering. A vessel is selected and the roughness on the hull surface induced by different level of fouling is considered. The increase in frictional resistance and effective power is evaluated for each particular case by using boundary layer similarity law analysis and experimental data. The results emphasise that the type of antifouling coatings has a great importance on the amount of fouling accumulation, hence on ship performance especially in low speed

ROV Trainer Kit for Education Purposes

    Get PDF
This paper presents the Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) trainer or called it as the ROV Trainer for the educational purpose. Many underwater industries are involved in developing underwater robot in order to reduce human works as well as increase productivity, efficiency and monitoring. Therefore, the ROV was designed in order to replace the divers and reduce a risk to a diver itself. However, the major constraints to the ROV designed are understanding and knowledge the fundamental of the ROV design. Therefore, ROV Trainer is designed in order to give a basic knowledge and as a platform to test the control system of the ROV. ROV Trainer was a design based on maneuverability and performance of each component with minimum cost where the size of ROV can be varied based on user needed. The Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) is used to control the movement of this ROV either as manual control or autonomous control. The experiment carried out from this ROV trainer such as buoyancy test, pressure test, measure thrust and controlling the ROV will be covered in ROV Trainer. This project will give many benefits for educational researcher, school educational kits and also related underwater industries by looking at ROV’s features with the needed minimum cost of implementation

Analysis of the potential of a wave energy conversion system for Maltese waters

    Get PDF
This paper presents the analysis of waves in the Maltese waters. Through data analysis the results will highlight the most common waves together with others which yield the largest power. The paper also presents a novel type of wave energy converter with a hydraulic power take off system which is being proposed to be replaced by a linear electric machine. Thus wave data was also analysed with respect to this prototype design. However due to its operational characteristics the design is not an optimal one for the local waters and a point absorber type of converter is suggested. This mechanical structure, in conjunction with the linear machine, shall absorb more power from waves with a large wavelength and a relatively small wave height.Alternative Technologies Ltd., Energy Investment Ltd, JMV Vibro Blocks Ltd., Solar Engineering Ltd. and Solar Solutions Ltd.peer-reviewe
