Elites, communities and the limited benefits of mentorship in electronic music
While the emergence of success in creative professions, such as music, has been studied extensively, the link between individual success and collaboration is not yet fully uncovered. Here we aim to fill this gap by analyzing longitudinal data on the co-releasing and mentoring patterns of popular electronic music artists appearing in the annual Top 100 ranking of DJ Magazine. We find that while this ranking list of popularity publishes 100 names, only the top 20 is stable over time, showcasing a lock-in effect on the electronic music elite. Based on the temporal co-release network of top musicians, we extract a diverse community structure characterizing the electronic music industry. These groups of artists are temporally segregated, sequentially formed around leading musicians, and represent changes in musical genres. We show that a major driving force behind the formation of music communities is mentorship: around half of musicians entering the top 100 have been mentored by current leading figures before they entered the list. We also find that mentees are unlikely to break into the top 20, yet have much higher expected best ranks than those who were not mentored. This implies that mentorship helps rising talents, but becoming an all-time star requires more. Our results provide insights into the intertwined roles of success and collaboration in electronic music, highlighting the mechanisms shaping the formation and landscape of artistic elites in electronic music

Cavity electromechanics with parametric mechanical driving
Microwave optomechanical circuits have been demonstrated to be powerful tools for both exploring fundamental physics of macroscopic mechanical oscillators, as well as being promising candidates for on-chip quantum-limited microwave devices. In most experiments so far, the mechanical oscillator is either used as a passive element and its displacement is detected using the superconducting cavity, or manipulated by intracavity fields. Here, we explore the possibility to directly and parametrically manipulate the mechanical nanobeam resonator of a cavity electromechanical system, which provides additional functionality to the toolbox of microwave optomechanics. In addition to using the cavity as an interferometer to detect parametrically modulated mechanical displacement and squeezed thermomechanical motion, we demonstrate that this approach can realize a phase-sensitive parametric amplifier for intracavity microwave photons. Future perspectives of optomechanical systems with a parametrically driven mechanical oscillator include exotic bath engineering with negative effective photon temperatures, or systems with enhanced optomechanical nonlinearities
4D Spin Glasses in Magnetic Field Have a Mean Field like Phase
By using numerical simulations we show that the 4D Edwards Anderson
spin glass in magnetic field undergoes a mean field like phase transition. We
use a dynamical approach: we simulate large lattices (of volume ) and work
out the behavior of the system in limit where both and go to infinity,
but where the limit is taken first. By showing that the dynamic
overlap converges to a value smaller than the static one we exhibit replica
symmetry breaking. The critical exponents are compatible with the ones obtained

Equilibrium and off-equilibrium simulations of the 4d Gaussian spin glass
In this paper we study the on and off-equilibrium properties of the four
dimensional Gaussian spin glass. In the static case we determine with more
precision that in previous simulations both the critical temperature as well as
the critical exponents. In the off-equilibrium case we settle the general form
of the autocorrelation function, and show that is possible to obtain

The mean field theory of spin glasses: the heuristic replica approach and recent rigorous results
The mathematically correct computation of the spin glasses free energy in the
infinite range limit crowns 25 years of mathematic efforts in solving this
model. The exact solution of the model was found many years ago by using a
heuristic approach; the results coming from the heuristic approach were crucial
in deriving the mathematical results. The mathematical tools used in the
rigorous approach are quite different from those of the heuristic approach. In
this note we will review the heuristic approach to spin glasses in the light of
the rigorous results; we will also discuss some conjectures that may be useful

Evidence and theory for lower rates of depression in larger US urban areas
It is commonly assumed that cities are detrimental to mental health. However, the evidence remains inconsistent and at most, makes the case for differences between rural and urban environments as a whole. Here, we propose a model of depression driven by an individual’s accumulated experience mediated by social networks. The connection between observed systematic variations in socioeconomic networks and built environments with city size provides a link between urbanization and mental health. Surprisingly, this model predicts lower depression rates in larger cities. We confirm this prediction for US cities using four independent datasets. These results are consistent with other behaviors associated with denser socioeconomic networks and suggest that larger cities provide a buffer against depression. This approach introduces a systematic framework for conceptualizing and modeling mental health in complex physical and social networks, producing testable predictions for environmental and social determinants of mental health also applicable to other psychopathologies
