    Exploiting the labile site in dinuclear [Pd2L2]n+ metallo-cycles: multi-step control over binding affinity without alteration of core host structure

    While Nature often controls supramolecular processes through regulation giving multiple levels of activity, synthetic metallosupramolecular systems have generally been binary (e.g. on/off) when they have control over molecular recognition events, and have often relied upon drastic chemical transformations or complete disassembly to enforce this control. We report here a new low symmetry ligand with a bidentate and a monodentate site (L). In combination with Pd2+, this ligand forms a [2 + 2] metallo-macrocycle, [Pd2L2L′2]n+, where L′ is the monodentate ancillary ligand that occupies the fourth and final coordination site of the metal ions. This assembly is structurally simple, but displays nuanced, multi-step binding affinity toward a neutral diplatinate guest employed for proof-of-concept. This complexity is introduced through varying the identity of L′, which can either be solvent (DMSO) or the halides chloride, bromide or iodide. The identity of L′ alters the cationic charge of the complex (neutral DMSO versus monoanionic halides) or otherwise influences the electron deficiency of the binding site of the host through varied strength of halide-ligand intra-molecular hydrogen bonding. Cycling between these different complexes was demonstrated, except for L′ = chloride which is non-reversible. This system therefore is able to interact with a platinate guest with four different graduations of affinity in response to stimuli, while still retaining the same simple core cationic structure. In addition to multi-setting binding affinity, we believe this is the first example of the use of variable intramolecular hydrogen bonding strength in switchable ancillary ligands to alter the electronic character and hence the π-π recognition characteristics of a metallosupramolecular host.DP would like to thank the ARC for a DECRA Fellowship, and the Royal Society of New Zealand for a Rutherford Postdoctoral Fellowship.     On the possibility of magneto-structural correlations: detailed studies of di-nickel carboxylate complexes

    A series of water-bridged dinickel complexes of the general formula [Ni<sub>2</sub>(μ<sub>2</sub>-OH<sub>2</sub>)(μ2- O<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu)<sub>2</sub>(O<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu)2(L)(L0)] (L = HO<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu, L0 = HO<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu (1), pyridine (2), 3-methylpyridine (4); L = L0 = pyridine (3), 3-methylpyridine (5)) has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic properties have been probed by magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy, and detailed measurements show that the axial zero-field splitting, D, of the nickel(ii) ions is on the same order as the isotropic exchange interaction, J, between the nickel sites. The isotropic exchange interaction can be related to the angle between the nickel centers and the bridging water molecule, while the magnitude of D can be related to the coordination sphere at the nickel sites

    Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber : Recent R&D Results

    The Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber collaboration recently reported a dark matter limit obtained with a 10 liter time projection chamber filled with CF[subscript 4] gas. The 10 liter detector was capable of 2D tracking (perpendicular to the drift direction) and 2D fiducialization, and only used information from two CCD cameras when identifying tracks and rejecting backgrounds. Since that time, the collaboration has explored the potential benefits of photomultiplier tube and electronic charge readout to achieve 3D tracking, and particle identification for background rejection.     The Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI)

    FOXSI is a direct-imaging, hard X-ray (HXR) telescope optimized for solar flare observations. It detects hot plasma and energetic electrons in and near energy release sites in the solar corona via bremsstrahlung emission, measuring both spatial structure and particle energy distributions. It provides two orders of magnitude faster imaging spectroscopy than previously available, probing physically relevant timescales (<1s) never before accessible to address fundamental questions of energy release and efficient particle acceleration that have importance far beyond their solar application (e.g., planetary magnetospheres, flaring stars, accretion disks). FOXSI measures not only the bright chromospheric X-ray emission where electrons lose most of their energy, but also simultaneous emission from electrons as they are accelerated in the corona and propagate along magnetic field lines. FOXSI detects emission from high in the tenuous corona, where previous instruments have been blinded by nearby bright features and will fully characterizes the accelerated electrons and hottest plasmas as they evolve in energy, space, and time to solve the mystery of how impulsive energy release leads to solar eruptions, the primary drivers of space weather at Earth, and how those eruptions are energized and evolve.Comment: White paper submitted to the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024-2033; 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Adaptive Manufacturing for Healthcare During the COVID-19 Emergency and Beyond

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, global health services have faced unprecedented demands. Many key workers in health and social care have experienced crippling shortages of personal protective equipment, and clinical engineers in hospitals have been severely stretched due to insufficient supplies of medical devices and equipment. Many engineers who normally work in other sectors have been redeployed to address the crisis, and they have rapidly improvised solutions to some of the challenges that emerged, using a combination of low-tech and cutting-edge methods. Much publicity has been given to efforts to design new ventilator systems and the production of 3D-printed face shields, but many other devices and systems have been developed or explored. This paper presents a description of efforts to reverse engineer or redesign critical parts, specifically a manifold for an anaesthesia station, a leak port, plasticware for COVID-19 testing, and a syringe pump lock box. The insights obtained from these projects were used to develop a product lifecycle management system based on Aras Innovator, which could with further work be deployed to facilitate future rapid response manufacturing of bespoke hardware for healthcare. The lessons learned could inform plans to exploit distributed manufacturing to secure back-up supply chains for future emergency situations. If applied generally, the concept of distributed manufacturing could give rise to “21st century cottage industries” or “nanofactories,” where high-tech goods are produced locally in small batches

    Supermarket Healthy Eating for Life (SHELf): protocol of a randomised controlled trial promoting healthy food and beverage consumption through price reduction and skill-building strategies

    Background: In the context of rising food prices, there is a need for evidence on the most effective approaches for promoting healthy eating. Individually-targeted behavioural interventions for increasing food-related skills show promise, but are unlikely to be effective in the absence of structural supports. Fiscal policies have been advocated as a means of promoting healthy eating and reducing obesity and nutrition-related disease, but there is little empirical evidence of their effectiveness. This paper describes the Supermarket Healthy Eating for LiFe (SHELf) study, a randomised controlled trial to investigate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a tailored skill-building intervention and a price reduction intervention, separately and in combination, against a control condition for promoting purchase and consumption of healthy foods and beverages in women from high and low socioeconomic groups.Methods/design: SHELf comprises a randomised controlled trial design, with participants randomised to receive either (1) a skill-building intervention; (2) price reductions on fruits, vegetables and low-joule soft drink beverages and water; (3) a combination of skill-building and price reductions; or (4) a control condition. Five hundred women from high and low socioeconomic areas will be recruited through a store loyalty card program and local media. Randomisation will occur on receipt of informed consent and baseline questionnaire. An economic evaluation from a societal perspective using a cost-consequences approach will compare the costs and outcomes between intervention and control groups.Discussion: This study will build on a pivotal partnership with a major national supermarket chain and the Heart Foundation to investigate the effectiveness of intervention strategies aimed at increasing women&rsquo;s purchasing and consumption of fruits and vegetables and decreased purchasing and consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. It will be among the first internationally to examine the effects of two promising approaches - skill-building and price reductions - on diet amongst women.<br /

    Detection of carbon monoxide's 4.6 micron fundamental band structure in WASP-39b's atmosphere with JWST NIRSpec G395H

    Carbon monoxide (CO) is predicted to be the dominant carbon-bearing molecule in giant planet atmospheres and, along with water, is important for discerning the oxygen and therefore carbon-to-oxygen ratio of these planets. The fundamental absorption mode of CO has a broad, double-branched structure composed of many individual absorption lines from 4.3 to 5.1 μm, which can now be spectroscopically measured with JWST. Here we present a technique for detecting the rotational sub-band structure of CO at medium resolution with the NIRSpec G395H instrument. We use a single transit observation of the hot Jupiter WASP-39b from the JWST Transiting Exoplanet Community Early Release Science (JTEC ERS) program at the native resolution of the instrument (R ~ 2700) to resolve the CO absorption structure. We robustly detect absorption by CO, with an increase in transit depth of 264 ± 68 ppm, in agreement with the predicted CO contribution from the best-fit model at low resolution. This detection confirms our theoretical expectations that CO is the dominant carbon-bearing molecule in WASP-39b's atmosphere and further supports the conclusions of low C/O and supersolar metallicities presented in the JTEC ERS papers for WASP-39b

    The research area is a limestone quarry region prospect, located in Gunung Sudo, Gunung Kidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. Safety factor of bench in limestone quarry is extremely determined by rock mass quality. The aim of this research is analyzing of rock mass strength of limestone in the quarry prospect using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The research used quantitative method. To obtain rock mass strength analysis of limestone needs some parameters. The main parameters are uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock, GSI, lithology, disturbance factor, unit weight and application for slope (height).To solve this analysis is assisted by Roclab software. The Roclab is a software program for determining rock mass strength parameters based on the generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Final result of the research will be used for safely mine design of the limestone quarry
