"Fortress Europe." Matthew Carr. Hurst. October 2012. --- For nearly thirty years the Berlin Wall symbolised a divided Europe. In the euphoric aftermath of the Cold War, the advent of a new borderless world was hailed, one in which such barriers would become obsolete. Today these utopian predictions have yet to be realised. An inspiring and thoroughly researched book, not afraid of communicating a clear political message and expressing severe criticism, Fortress Europe provides much room for discussion not only on EU immigration policies, but also on the norms, values and principles on which Europe builds itself and against which it is measured, writes Inez von Weitershausen

State-related electroencephalographic deviances in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Objective: This study aimed to provide more insight into the functional significance of electroencephalographic (EEG) deviances in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by evaluating quantitative EEG during performance on a task with a low activation level and a task tapping top-down executive control. Method: Behavioral performance and EEG activity were compared between 24 adults with ADHD and 20 typically developing adults during a simple slow-paced 2-choice reaction time (2-CRT) task and a moderately paced flanker task. Results: During the slow 2-CRT task, adults with ADHD responded slower, more variably, and tended to make more errors of commission. Although being slower, adults with ADHD showed equally large congruency effects during flanker task performance, indicating intact interference inhibition. In the slow 2-CRT task, (midline) theta and beta power were higher in the ADHD group than in the control group, whereas no significant EEG group differences were observed in the flanker task. A moderate positive correlation between theta power and errors of commission was found in the 2-CRT task for adults with ADHD. Conclusions: Adults with ADHD performed worse on a task inducing a low activation level but showed intact interference inhibition. The EEG findings are in accord with this, showing an abnormal EEG pattern in ADHD only when a low activation level was induced, not when top-down executive control load was high. Time-on-task effects could not explain the group deviances. The findings indicate that EEG deviances in ADHD are task-dependent and may be related to a suboptimal energetic state, rather than impaired top-down executive control

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyze the influence of High Performance Work System on Anxiety Role Overload and Turnover Intentions with Job control as a moderating variable. The sample used in this study is Banking Employees in Banda Aceh. Data collection tool used in this study was a questionnaire. The sampling technique used in this study is proportionate stratified random sampling with a total of 135 questionnaires were distributed and only 131 can be collected. Methods of data analysis are Moderate Regression Analysis (MRA) and Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) which were used as methods of analysis to determine the effect of all the variables involved. The results showed that: 1) High Performance Work Systems has significant effect on the Anxiety role overloadon Banking Employees in Banda Aceh. 2) High Performance Work Systems has significant effect on Turnover Intentions on Banking Employees in Banda Aceh. 3) Anxiety role overload has significant effect on Turnover Intentions on Banking Employees in Banda Aceh.4) Job control has significant effect on role overload Anxiety on Banking Employess in Banda Aceh. 5) Based on simultaneous testing, it isshown that all the studied variables have significant effect on role overload Anxiety on Banking employees in Banda Aceh, but for Job control (Z2) as moderating variable does not have moderating effect on the model. 6) Anxiety role overload has a partially mediation on the effect of High Performance Work Systems on Turnover Intentions effect on Banking employees in Banda Aceh. 6) Peran kegelisahan yang berlebihan memediasi secara parsial (partial mediation) pengaruh HPWS terhadap Niat Berpindah pada karyawan Perbankan Banda AcehKata kunci: Sistem Berkinerja Tinggi, Kontrol Kerja, Peran Kegelisahan yang Berlebihan, Keinginan untuk Keluar.ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyze the effect of High Performance Work System on Anxiety Role Overload and Turnover Intentions with Job control as a moderating variable.
