Urban flooding reflects the urban expansion on the territory and the consequent soil sealing, which promotes the rapid movement of runoff and its concentration in depressed areas. This work deals with the design and interpretation of the structure defined by the surface runoff in urban areas for the village of Arouca and for the city of São João da Madeira. It's analysed the contribution of the urban fabric for the runoff reunion in depressed areas and identified the areas most susceptible to the occurrence of inundations. The adopted methodology is a quick procedure that allows interpreting how urban morphology contributes and exacerbates the occurrence of floods, by the identification of critical areas and thecontributory urban area to these locations. The results may support local authorities in identifying critical locations and implementing corrective measures to mitigate the occurrence of floods motivated by the urban surface runoff

Communication skills in higher education vs the labor market: different perceptions and valuations

    Get PDF
Communication skills are considered increasingly important by higher education institutions, but also by employers as they influence better professional perfor-mance. The literature review recommends a necessary and desirable alignment of the communicational aspect of academic curricula with work needs, so that graduates have professional success. The objective of this research is to know how communicational skills are seen and valued in higher education, specifically in a Portuguese Polytechnic Accounting and Business School. For this purpose, undergraduate and Masters students who integrate courses or approaches related to communicational skills are surveyed. Coordinators of some of these courses (who are also professors) are consulted too. The methodology adopted is the case study and the data collection techniques are questionnaires applied to a sample of students and interviews carried out with the Coordinators of some of afore-mentioned courses. According to a self-assessment carried out by students, it was concluded that their average communication performance is very good, which is not in line with the literature review. As for the existence of training, within the scope of communication skills, course coordinators and most students consider that these should be taught in higher education. In the opinion of the course di-rectors, there is an alignment between the skills taught in the courses and those that are required in the job market, an opinion that a not very expressive majority of students also share, although an overwhelming majority of students consider that this should be done. Course coordinators and students suggest motivating, practical and work-related pedagogical approaches for greater development of the skills in analysis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Lactic Acid Bacteria Contribution to Wine Quality and Safety

    Get PDF
Wine production is a complex biochemical process that brings into play different microorganisms. Among these, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play a central role in the quality of the final wine. LAB are not only responsible for the malolactic fermentation that usually occurs after the alcoholic fermentation but also contribute for other important biochemical reactions such as esterase and glycosidase activities and citric acid and methionine metabolism. Nonetheless, LAB may also contribute negatively to wine quality by contributing to the production of volatile phenols, biogenic amines, and ethyl carbamate. This chapter aims to integrate the current knowledge about the role of LAB in wine flavor and quality

    Social sustainability in fashion companies

Fashion brands that choose the fast fashion production model are still the most expressive in the market. This model is characterized by fast production and disposal, which becomes unsustainable for the planet and for the society. While the environmental issue is urgent, the social issue also requires immediate action. Therefore, this study takes social issues as the central object of the study. Research methodologies, analysis of existing documents, semi-structured interviews, online surveys and focus group interviews, made it possible to create a group of suggestions and recommendations for projects that can be implemented in fashion companies, in order to contribute to social sustainability

As part of the Fast-Track Cities initiative, a pilot study was initiated in community pharmacies in Portugal. Aim: To characterize the individuals choosing to have point-of-care testing or screening for human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis C, and hepatitis B virus infections in community pharmacies, their risk behaviours and motivations to perform the tests, as well as to understand the facilitators and barriers from the perspective of pharmacists. Method: A quantitative and qualitative study was conducted. A survey was applied to test users in pharmacies between May and December 2019, and three focus groups were conducted with six, four, and five pharmacists involved in the initiative. Qualitative data were analysed according to thematic content analysis. Results: A total of 210 questionnaires were collected (57.9% response rate). Point-of-care test users were predominantly male, mean age of 35 (± 13.0) years, the majority had higher education level, and 22.8% were born outside of Portugal. Almost half of the users were first time tested and the main reason for screening was unprotected sexual intercourse. Pharmacists identified speed, confidentiality, counselling provided to users, pharmacists’ initial training to perform the tests, and trust in the pharmacist as facilitators of these tests. Stigma associated with infections, the procedure, logistical conditions, and the referral process were considered as barriers. Conclusion: Pharmacies are a screening site with special importance for individuals who are first tested, heterosexuals, and some migrants. Nevertheless, it is necessary to understand and reduce barriers and increase the support to specific groups.publishersversionpublishe
