    Content Clauses in English

In the case of J espersen (l964: 349-351), the term 'content clause' refers to both> sentential complements and appositional complements. For example, (1) a. He believes that the world is round. b. He knows the fact that the world is round. The italicized part of (la) which does not contain a head noun is a sentential complement, whereas the italicized part of (1b) which contains a head noun is an appositional corriplemenL Jespersen's term, 'content clause, refers to both categories. This paper, however, uses the term in a narrow sense which refers only to sentential complements which are preceded by head nouns. In traditional grammars, content clauses were understood to the effect that head nouns and their content clauses constitute a syntactic appositional relationship. Furthermore, Jespersen (op. cit.) indicated that head nouns and their content clauses may be separated by Extraposition. With regard to content clauses, generative-transformational grammars have not much surpassed studies of traditional grammars, particularly in their semantic explorations

    Two Causative Forms in Korean

We all agree that sentences must be synonymous with each other if they are to be related by transformation. But the question is whether or not they are "really" synonymous. There are growing number of cases in which a set of sentences that were previously regarded as synonymous turn out to be non-synonymous when subject to deeper investigation. In many cases, arguments for non-synonymy seem to be correct hut there are some cases in which such arguments do not hold simply because the investigators incorrectly observed the phenomena and then jumped to erroneous conclusions

    Semantics of Delimiters

One of the characteristics which drastically distinguish Korean (and Japanese) from 'English (and other languages) is the phenomenon of Korean (and Japanese) delimiters, the counterpart of which is almost lacking in many languages. When a speaker communicates with an addressee, the speaker may report the message to the addressee from a neutral point of view, or he may add his own evaluation and/or intention and/or focus to the neutrally transmittable message in a discourse setting such as situation and context

    Double Modality in Korean

The purpose of the present paper is to explain the phenomenon of 'double modality' in Korean. This paper claims that the -most reasonable explanation for such a phenomenon requires the Performative Analysis(cf.Austin, 1965; Ross, 1970). The Performative Analysis for 'double modality' in Korean seems to be structurally and semantically correct

Improving Prediction Quality in Collaborative Filtering Based on Clustering

In this paper we present the recommender systems that use the k-means clustering method in order to solve the problems associated with neighbor selection. The first method is to solve the problem in which customers belong to different clusters due to the distance-based characteristics despite the fact that they are similar customers, by properly converting data before performing clustering. The second method explains the k-prototype algorithm performing clus-tering by expanding not only the numeric data but also the categorical data. The experimental results show that better prediction quality can be obtained when both methods are used together. 1

Hierarchical Micro/Nano-Porous Acupuncture Needles Offering Enhanced Therapeutic Properties

Acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention has been widely used for treatment of many pathophysiological disorders. For achieving improved therapeutic effects, relatively thick acupuncture needles have been frequently used in clinical practice with, in turn, enhanced stimulation intensity. However due to the discomforting nature of the larger-diameter acupuncture needles there is considerable interest in developing advanced acupuncture therapeutical techniques that provide more comfort with improved efficacy. So motivated, we have developed a new class of acupuncture needles, porous acupuncture needles (PANs) with hierarchical micro/nano-scale conical pores upon the surface, fabricated via a simple and well known electrochemical process, with surface area approximately 20 times greater than conventional acupuncture needles. The performance of these high-surface-area PANs is evaluated by monitoring the electrophysiological and behavioral responses from the in vivo stimulation of Shenmen (HT7) points in Wistar rats, showing PANs to be more effective in controlling electrophysiological and behavioral responses than conventional acupuncture needles. Comparative analysis of cocaine induced locomotor activity using PANs and thick acupuncture needles shows enhanced performance of PANs with significantly less pain sensation. Our work offers a unique pathway for achieving a comfortable and improved acupuncture therapeutic effect. © The Author(s) 2016.1

Cordycepin induces apoptosis of human ovarian cancer cells by inhibiting CCL5-mediated Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway

The chemokine, CCL5, is a key mediator for the recruitment of immune cells into tumors and tissues. Akt/NF-κB signaling is significantly activated by CCL5. However, the role of NF-κB inactivation in apoptosis induced by negative regulation of CCL5 remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the effect of cordycepin on NF-κB activity in SKOV-3 cells and found that cordycepin-mediated inhibition of NF-κB signaling induced apoptosis in SKOV-3 cells via the serial activation of caspases. In addition, immune-blotting analysis showed that CCL5 is highly expressed in SKOV-3 cells. In addition to activating caspases, we show that, cordycepin prevents TNF-α-induced increase in CCL5, Akt, NF-κB, and c-FLIPL activation and that CCL5 siRNA could inhibit Akt/NF-κB signaling. Moreover, cordycepin negatively regulated the TNF-α-mediated IκB/NF-κB pathway and c-FLIPL activation to promote JNK phosphorylation, resulting in caspase-3 activation and apoptosis. Also, we show that c-FLIPL is rapidly lost in NF-κB activation-deficient. siRNA mediated c-FLIP inhibition increased JNK. SP600125, a selective JNK inhibitor, downregulated p-JNK expression in cordycepin-treated SKOV-3 cells, leading to suppression of cordycepin-induced apoptosis. Thus, these results indicate that cordycepin inhibits CCL5-mediated Akt/NF-κB signaling, which upregulates caspase-3 activation in SKOV-3 cells, supporting the potential of cordycepin as a therapeutic agent for ovarian cancer

Chronic exposure to dexamethasone may not affect sugammadex reversal of rocuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade: an in vivo study on rats

Background Chronic glucocorticoid exposure is associated with resistance to nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents. Therefore, we hypothesized that sugammadex-induced recovery would occur more rapidly in subjects exposed to chronic dexamethasone compared to those who were not exposed. This study evaluated the sugammadex-induced recovery profile after neuromuscular blockade (NMB) in rats exposed to chronic dexamethasone. Methods Sprague–Dawley rats were allocated to three groups (dexamethasone, control, and pair-fed group) for the in vivo study. The mice received daily intraperitoneal dexamethasone injections (500 μg/kg) or 0.9% saline for 15 days. To achieve complete NMB, 3.5 mg/kg rocuronium was administered on the sixteenth day. The recovery time to a train-of-four ratio ≥ 0.9 was measured to evaluate the complete recovery following the sugammadex injection. Results Among the groups, no significant differences were observed in the recovery time to a train-of-four ratio ≥ 0.9 following sugammadex administration (P = 0.531). The time to the second twitch of the train-of-four recovery following rocuronium administration indicated that the duration of NMB was significantly shorter in Group D than that in Groups C and P (P = 0.001). Conclusions Chronic exposure to dexamethasone did not shorten the recovery time of sugammadex-induced NMB reversal. However, the findings of this study indicated that no adjustments to sugammadex dosage or route of administration is required, even in patients undergoing long-term steroid treatment
