Types of competitiveness of Hungarian regions: agglomeration economies and endogenous regional development
Nowadays, more and more scholars of regional science are interested in the role of agglomeration economies in the knowledge-based economy. This issue can be dealt with from different points of view: the competitive type of functional or nodal regions and one has to examine the factors influencing regional competitiveness. To improve competitiveness of regions, different economic development programmes must be applied, which means that the improvement of competitiveness requires different strategies based on the different types of regions. In this paper we outline our analytical framework: the pyramid model of regional competitiveness and the UFO-model of cluster-based regional economic development. After introducing, we are going to investigate into the competitiveness of Hungarian microregions (LAU1). Our statistical analysis to underline the classification of microregions by competitiveness types is based on a complex methodology of multi-variable data analysis. For the investigation of agglomeration economies in these different types of microregions we apply the location quotient (LQ) method and Ellison-Glaeser-index of traded sectors. The Local Moran Index (LISA), which can be interpreted as the local index of spatial autocorrelation, is used to calculate the neighbourhood effects of the microregions.
An Attempt for the Measurement of Regional Competitiveness in Hungary
The main challenge of regional economic development is undoubtedly to increase the living standard and welfare of local population. Usually the state of development of regions and sub-regions within one country significantly differs. Parallel to the catching-up process of Hungary at the national level, there is another discernible process at the regional level: regional disparities are widening because the growth of the most developed sub-regions is increasing while the less favoured sub-regions are lagging behind. In Hungary, the dominates in development, the Western part is emerging, and the Eastern territorial units, mostly the ones by the boarder are lagging behind. Economic development should not be executed homogeneously, one should take into consideration the attributes and starting conditions of that certain territorial unit. The variety of starting conditions requires different interventions and strategies of economic development from region to region. Spatial units with different level of competitiveness should take variant steps on the road of economic development in order to achieve competitiveness in the global world. Due to their different starting conditions they cannot be developed by the same action plans. Regarding the fact that development or underdevelopment does not spread evenly in space, we chose to base our empirical research on the smallest spatial unit for which statistical data are still available. Furthermore sub-regions are worth analyzing because nowadays local economic development is attached to local areas and commuting zones that are almost equivalent to sub-regions. Present paper aims to rank the Hungarian sub-regions alongside development phases, with the help of multi-variable data analyzing methods based on a determined system of viewpoints, and adequate theoretical models and statistical data. We developed a weighting system of the indicators, following the logic of the adequate theoretical models. We are convinced that the presented theoretical model and the methodology based on it are suitable for making regional competitiveness measurable. Through this and with the help of statistical data, the competitiveness of any spatial unit of any level can be determined. We think what we have thon is significant because of the fact that a suitably analyzed starting point can contribute to choosing the best economic developing strategy for a certain region.

Felzárkózás és/vagy távolságtartó követés? A visegrádi országok térségeinek fejlődéséről = Catching up and/or following at a distance? On the prospect of the regions of the Visegrad countries
Az EurĂłpai UniĂłhoz 2004-ben csatlakozott a nĂ©gy visegrádi ország (V4), Csehország, Lengyelország, Magyarország Ă©s Szlovákia. Az itt Ă©lĹ‘k nagy remĂ©nyeket fűztek a csatlakozáshoz, a vĂ©rmesebb elvárások szerint pár Ă©ven belĂĽl Ă©letszĂnvonaluk felzárkĂłzhat a fejlett nyugati tagállamokĂ©hoz. A „felzárkĂłzás”, „közeledĂ©s”, „utolĂ©rĂ©s”, egy bizonyos felfogásban „konvergencia” sokrĂ©tű Ă©s sokfĂ©le Ă©rtelmezĂ©sben használt fogalmak, vágyott cĂ©lkĂ©nt egy-másfĂ©l Ă©vszázada fogalmazĂłdnak meg a kevĂ©sbĂ© fejlett országokban, tĂ©rsĂ©gekben. Az EurĂłpai UniĂł regionális politikájának is egyik fĹ‘ cĂ©lja a kevĂ©sbĂ© fejlett rĂ©giĂłk fejlĹ‘dĂ©sĂ©nek felgyorsĂtása Ă©s felzárkĂłztatásuk a tagállamok átlagához.
Tanulmányunkban azt vizsgáljuk, hogy e nĂ©gy, közepesen fejlett, hasonlĂł törtĂ©nelmi mĂşlttal Ă©s társadalmi-gazdasági szerkezettel rendelkezĹ‘ posztszocialista ország tĂ©rsĂ©geinek mennyire volt sikeres a felzárkĂłzása az EurĂłpai UniĂł korábbi tagállamainak átlagához 2000 Ă©s 2014 között. A felzárkĂłzás fĹ‘bb jellemzĹ‘inek vizsgálatához a NUTS3-as terĂĽleti szintet vesszĂĽk alapul. A szabad cink szerepe a CaMPK-II modulálta neuronális folyamatokban = The effect of free zinc on CaMPK-II modulated neuronal processes
Pályázatunk nĂ©gy Ă©ves idĹ‘tartama alatt választ kerestĂĽnk Ă©s szereztĂĽnk számos specifikus kĂ©rdĂ©sre a cink központi idegrendszerben betöltött szerepĂ©rĹ‘l. 1) Korábbi in vitro eredmĂ©nyeink azt mutatták, hogy a cink egy igen szokatlan mechanizmus Ăştján befolyásolja a CaMKII aktivitását, ezĂ©rt kĂĽlönös figyelmet szenteltĂĽnk a CaMKII Ă©s cink kapcsolatára illetve a cink által indukált autofoszforiláciĂł lehetsĂ©ges szerepĂ©re. LĂ©trehoztunk egy Ser279 foszforiláciĂłs hely specifikus transzgenikus egĂ©r törzset, termeltettĂĽnk foszforiláciĂłs hely sepcifikus antitestet kĂsĂ©rleteinkhez Ă©s bizonyĂtĂ©kot szereztunk ezen foszforiláciĂłs hely tanulási folyamatokban betöltött lehetsĂ©ges szerepĂ©re. 2) A nemzetközi irodalombĂłl tudtuk, hogy a cink szerepet játszik patolĂłgiás folyamatok irányĂtásában is. Kutatásainkban kĂ©t olyan sĂşlyos neurodegneráciĂłhoz vezetĹ‘ folyamatot tanulmányoztunk melyben a sejtekbĹ‘l illetve setekben felszabadulĂł cink komoly szerepet játszhat. Ezek egyikĂ©ben az Alzheimer kĂłrban a cink jelátviteli folyamatokra gyakorolt hatását vizsgáltuk. A másikban, a szenilis makula degeneráciĂłban (az Alzheimer kĂłrhoz hasonlĂł betegsĂ©g a retinában) kialakulásának okait viszgáltuk es azt találtuk, hogy cink, az Alzheimer plakkokhoz hasonloan, rĂ©szt vesz a retinalis plakkon kiaalakulásában. RemĂ©nyeink szerint kĂsĂ©rleteink közelebb vezethetnek bennĂĽnket a cinkkel összefĂĽggĂ©sbe hozhatĂł fiziolĂłgiás Ă©s patholĂłgiás folyamatok molekuláris mechanizmusainak megĂ©rtĂ©sĂ©hez. | In this Grant we set out to investigate specific question about the role of zinc in the central nervous system. 1) Our previous experiments showed that zinc affects CaMKII activity and autophosphorylation in a previously unrecognised way. Therefore, we set out to investigate a zinc-CaMKII connection. We generated Ser279Ala mutant mice and a phosphorylation site specific antibody for these studies. We also obtained proof that the phosphorylation of Set279 might play a role in learning and memory processes. 2) It is well documented in the scientific literature that zinc is involved in several pathological processes of the central nervous system, although the exact mechanism of these actions were not known. We investigated two pathologocal processes in which zinc had been implicated: Alzheimer?s disease (AD) and Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), an AD ?like disease of the outer retina. We obtained some very exciting results on how zinc might affect signalling through amyloid beta peptides. In addition we documented the first time that zinc accummulate in a very high concentration in the plaque-like deposits of the outer retina. These plaques are connected to the development of advenced AMD the most blinding disease in the elderly in the developed world. We believe that our results will be important for the understanding of the processes zinc might be involved in the normal and degenerating central nervous system
Drivers of regional competitiveness in the Central European countries
The examination of regional competitiveness has become a research question of outstanding importance in the Central European post-socialist countries since joining the EU. In our study we will proceed to analyse the competitiveness of 93 NUTS2 level regions of 8 Central European countries with the help of an empirical data base, using multivariable statistical methods. After introducing the database, we are going to investigate into the common revealed competitiveness indicator. Not only revealed competitiveness categories shall be analysed with the help of multivariable statistical procedures, but also the background processes described by the factor analysis and the multivariable linear regression model
