Interkulturelle Wirtschaftskommunikation zwischen Deutschland und Korea: Problematik im interkulturellen Verstehen in Bezug auf die Arbeitsweise von Deutschen und Koreanern
Economical relationships between German and South Korean companies are successfully growing. Nevertheless, difficulties in understanding each other in face-to-face-communication between managers of both countries become evident when management styles of the own culture are applied to multi-cultural business situations. Such conflicts lead to an increasing interest in theories of intercultural business communication in South Korea. The following article summarizes the outcome of a research project "A Transcultural Study for Solution of Trading Conflicts between Korea and the EU" which was conducted in 2003. The goal of the project was to make out culture-based differences in German and Korean management styles. The focus was put on three main domains which seem to be the most outstanding causes of conflicts: 1. valuation of the written and oral word in business communication; 2. concepts of time in mutual planing activities and 3. methods of operation in carrying out business plans. 30 managers of both countries were interviewed about their work experiences in the other country. Hofstede's modell of cultural dimensions and Hall's description of cultures provide the foundation for comparing and interpreting their answers. The article concludes with suggestions for improving future enterprises in the field of business between both countries
Alternative Embryo Transfer on Day 3 or Day 5 for Reducing the Risk of Multiple Gestations
Purpose: This study was carried out to reduce the possibility of high-order multiple gestations and the failure of embryo transfer by determining their replacement date based on the number and quality of 2-day embryos.
Methods: All zygotes were cocultured with cumulus cells in 10 Ā¹l of YS medium containing 10% human follicular fluid (hFF) for 48 or 96 hr. In period I, all embryos were transferred on day 3 (1032 cycles). In period II, the embryos were transferred on either day 3 or day 5 by determining their replacement date based on the number and quality of 2-day embryos: there were 2701 patients in whom embryos were replaced on day 3 (in the case that the number of zygotes was less than eight and the number of good-quality embryos was less than three) and 1952 patients less than 40 years old in whom embryos were replaced on day 5 (in the case that the number of zygotes was eight or more and/or the number of good-quality embryos was three or more). On the other hand, patients who were 40 years old or more were alloted to day 3 transfer cycles, regardless of the number and quality of the 2-day embryos, due to the possibility of their not producing blastocyst-stage embryos in vitro.
Results: The number of embryos transferred in period II was 2.9 Ā± 0.6, while that in period I was 3.7 Ā± 0.5. The multiple pregnancy rate was significantly decreased in period II (30.7%) compared to that (49.6%) in period I, while the pregnancy and implantation rates in period II (36.1 and 16.4%, respectively) were not lower than those (34.9 and 16.1%, respectively) in period I. The rate of triplet or more gestations was significantly minimized in period II (2.3%) compared to that in period I (26.5%).
Conclusions: We propose that determination of the date on which embryos should be transferred based on the number and quality of embryos on day 2 may help to maintain an acceptable pregnancy rate, while minimizing embryo transfer failure and high-order multiple gestations
Dietary Glucose Consumption Promotes RALDH Activity in Small Intestinal CD103(+)CD11b(+) Dendritic Cells
Retinal dehydrogenase (RALDH) enzymatic activities catalyze the conversion of
vitamin A to its metabolite Retinoic acid (RA) in intestinal dendritic cells (DCs)
and promote immunological tolerance. However, precise understanding of the exogenous
factors that act as initial trigger of RALDH activity in these cells is still
evolving. By using germ-free (GF) mice raised on an antigen free (AF) elemental
diet, we find that certain components in diet are critically required to establish
optimal RALDH expression and activity, most prominently in small intestinal
CD103(+)CD11b(+) DCs (siLP-DCs) right from the beginning of their lives.
Surprisingly, systematic screens using modified diets devoid of individual dietary
components indicate that proteins, starch and minerals are dispensable for this
activity. On the other hand, in depth comparison between subtle differences in
dietary composition among different dietary regimes reveal that adequate glucose
concentration in diet is a critical determinant for establishing RALDH activity
specifically in siLP-DCs. Consequently, pre-treatment of siLP-DCs, and not
mesenteric lymph node derived MLNDCs with glucose, results in significant
enhancement in the in vitro generation of induced Regulatory T (iTreg) cells. Our
findings reveal previously underappreciated role of dietary glucose concentration in
establishing regulatory properties in intestinal DCs, thereby extending a potential
therapeutic module against intestinal inflammation11Ysciescopu
Development and evaluation of a plant-based air filter system for bacterial growth control
We investigated a novel plant-based air filter system for bacterial growth control. The volatile components released from the experimental plant (Cupressus macrocarpa) were used as the basis of the bacterial growth control and inhibition. We monitored the effect of light on the gas exhausted from the system, and we found that the presence of light induced an increase in the O2 concentration and a decrease in the CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas. A variety of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria was used to elucidate the effect of the exhaust gas on bacterial growth. In the Bacillus subtilis cultivation aerated with the exhaust gas (batch mode), we observed a decrease in the specific growth rate (Ī¼ = 0.227 h-1) compared with the control experiments (0.257 h-1). The same result was observed for the Staphylococcus aureus cultivation aerated with the exhaust gas. In the case of Gram-negative bacterial cultivation aerated with the gas, no significant inhibitory effect of the exhaust gas on the bacterial growth was observed. When the number of bacteria (B. subtilis) in a continuous culture was varied at different aeration rates (between 50 to 200 mL/min) using the exhaust gas, a prominent inhibitory effect was observed. Preliminary gas analysis showed that the major inhibitory factors in the exhaust gas are Ī±- and Ī²-pinene and linalool. Histone lysine methylation and neurodevelopmental disorders
Methylation of several lysine residues of histones is a crucial mechanism for relatively long-term regulation of genomic activity. Recent molecular biological studies have demonstrated that the function of histone methylation is more diverse and complex than previously thought. Moreover, studies using newly available genomics techniques, such as exome sequencing, have identified an increasing number of histone lysine methylation-related genes as intellectual disability-associated genes, which highlights the importance of accurate control of histone methylation during neurogenesis. However, given the functional diversity and complexity of histone methylation within the cell, the study of the molecular basis of histone methylation-related neurodevelopmental disorders is currently still in its infancy. Here, we review the latest studies that revealed the pathological implications of alterations in histone methylation status in the context of various neurodevelopmental disorders and propose possible therapeutic application of epigenetic compounds regulating histone methylation status for the treatment of these diseases.
