Atmospheric refraction effects on baseline error in satellite laser ranging systems
Because of the mathematical complexities involved in exact analyses of baseline errors, it is not easy to isolate atmospheric refraction effects; however, by making certain simplifying assumptions about the ranging system geometry, relatively simple expressions can be derived which relate the baseline errors directly to the refraction errors. The results indicate that even in the absence of other errors, the baseline error for intercontinental baselines can be more than an order of magnitude larger than the refraction error
Analysis of short pulse laser altimetry data obtained over horizontal path
Recent pulsed measurements of atmospheric delay obtained by ranging to the more realistic targets including a simulated ocean target and an extended plate target are discussed. These measurements are used to estimate the expected timing accuracy of a correlation receiver system. The experimental work was conducted using a pulsed two color laser altimeter
Higgs bosons of a supersymmetric model at the Large Hadron Collider
It is found that CP symmetry may be explicitly broken in the Higgs sector of
a supersymmetric model with two extra neutral gauge bosons at the
one-loop level. The phenomenology of the model, the Higgs sector in particular,
is studied for a reasonable parameter space of the model, in the presence of
explicit CP violation at the one-loop level. At least one of the neutral Higgs
bosons of the model might be produced via the fusion process at the Large

Association between vitamin d deficiencies in sarcoidosis with disease activity, course of disease and stages of lung involvements
Background: Despite negative association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D and incidence of many chronic respiratory diseases, this feature was not well studied in sarcoidosis. Current study investigated the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency with sarcoidosis chronicity, disease activity, extra-pulmonary skin manifestations, urine calcium level and pulmonary function status in Iranian sarcoidosis patients. Results of this study along with future studies, will supply more effective programs for sarcoidosis treatment. Methods: Eighty sarcoidosis patients in two groups of insufficient serum level and sufficient serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D were studied. Course of sarcoidosis was defined as acute and chronic sarcoidosis. Pulmonary function test (PFT) was assessed by spirometry. Skin involvements were defined as biopsy proven skin sarcoidosis. 24-hour urine calcium level was used to specify the disease activity. Stages of lung involvements were obtained by CT-scan and chest X-ray. The statistical analyses were evaluated using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: A significant negative correlation was obtained between vitamin D deficiency in sarcoidosis patients and disease chronic course and stages two to four of lung involvements. Considering other parameters of the disease and vitamin D deficiency, no significant correlation was detected. Conclusions: In conclusion, results of the current study implies in the role of vitamin 25(OH)D deficiencies in predicting the course of chronic sarcoidosis. Furthermore, it was concluded that vitamin 25(OH)D deficiency can direct pulmonary sarcoidosis toward stage 2â4 of lung involvements
New approximations for the cone of copositive matrices and its dual
We provide convergent hierarchies for the cone C of copositive matrices and
its dual, the cone of completely positive matrices. In both cases the
corresponding hierarchy consists of nested spectrahedra and provide outer
(resp. inner) approximations for C (resp. for its dual), thus complementing
previous inner (resp. outer) approximations for C (for the dual). In
particular, both inner and outer approximations have a very simple
interpretation. Finally, extension to K-copositivity and K-complete positivity
for a closed convex cone K, is straightforward.Comment: 8
Theoretical and experimental analyses of the performance of two-color laser ranging systems
The statistical properties of the signals reflected from the retroreflector equipped satellites were studied. It is found that coherence interference between pulse reflections from retroreflectors of different ranges on the array platform is the primary cause of signal fluctuations. The performance of a cross-correlation technique to estimate the differential propagation time is analyzed by considering both shot noise and speckle. For the retroreflector arrays, timing performance is dominated by interference induced speckle, and the differential propagation time cannot be resolved to better than the pulse widths of the received signals. The differential timing measurements obtained over a horizontal path are analyzed. The ocean-reflected pulse measurements obtained from the airborne two-color laser altimeter experiment are presented
Iron-Based Heavy Quasiparticles in SrFeSb: An Infrared Spectroscopic Study
Temperature-dependent infrared reflectivity spectra of SrFeSb
has been measured. A renormalized Drude peak with a heavy effective mass and a
pronounced pseudogap of 10 meV develops in the optical conductivity spectra at
low temperatures. As the temperature decreases below 100 K, the effective mass
() rapidly increases, and the scattering rate () is quenched.
The temperature dependence of and indicates that the
hybridization between the Fe 3d spins and the charge carriers plays an
important role in determining the physical properties of SrFeSb at
low temperatures. This result is the clear evidence of the iron-based heavy

Luminosity Functions of Elliptical Galaxies at z < 1.2
The luminosity functions of E/S0 galaxies are constructed in 3 different
redshift bins (0.2 < z < 0.55, 0.55 < z < 0.8, 0.8 < z < 1.2), using the data
from the Hubble Space Telescope Medium Deep Survey (HST MDS) and other HST
surveys. These independent luminosity functions show the brightening in the
luminosity of E/S0s by about 0.5~1.0 magnitude at z~1, and no sign of
significant number evolution.
This is the first direct measurement of the luminosity evolution of E/S0
galaxies, and our results support the hypothesis of a high redshift of
formation (z > 1) for elliptical galaxies, together with weak evolution of the

The Morphologically Divided Redshift Distribution of Faint Galaxies
We have constructed a morphologically divided redshift distribution of faint
field galaxies using a statistically unbiased sample of 196 galaxies brighter
than I = 21.5 for which detailed morphological information (from the Hubble
Space Telescope) as well as ground-based spectroscopic redshifts are available.
Galaxies are classified into 3 rough morphological types according to their
visual appearance (E/S0s, Spirals, Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's), and redshift
distributions are constructed for each type. The most striking feature is the
abundance of low to moderate redshift Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's at I < 19.5. This
confirms that the faint end slope of the luminosity function (LF) is steep
(alpha < -1.4) for these objects. We also find that Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's are fairly
abundant at moderate redshifts, and this can be explained by strong luminosity
evolution. However, the normalization factor (or the number density) of the LF
of Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's is not much higher than that of the local LF of
Sdm/dE/Irr/Pec's. Furthermore, as we go to fainter magnitudes, the abundance of
moderate to high redshift Irr/Pec's increases considerably. This cannot be
explained by strong luminosity evolution of the dwarf galaxy populations alone:
these Irr/Pec's are probably the progenitors of present day ellipticals and
spiral galaxies which are undergoing rapid star formation or merging with their
neighbors. On the other hand, the redshift distributions of E/S0s and spirals
are fairly consistent those expected from passive luminosity evolution, and are
only in slight disagreement with the non-evolving model.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures (published in ApJ
