GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS AND GARCH EFFECTS IN STOCK RETURN DATA

It is shown that the volume of trade can be decomposed into proportional proxies for stochastic flows of good news and bad news into the market. Positive (good) information flows are assumed to increase the price of a financial vehicle while negative (bad) information flows decrease the price. For the majority of a sample of ten split-stocks it is shown that the proposed decomposition explains more GARCH than volume itself. Using the proposed decomposition, the variance of returns for younger split stocks reacts asymmetrically to good news flowing into the market, while the variance for older split-stocks reacts symmetrically to good news and bad news.information flows; autocorrelation

Novel Microelectromechanical Systems Image Reversal Fabrication Process Based on Robust SU-8 Masking Layers

This paper discusses a novel fabrication process that uses a combination of negative and positive photoresists with positive tone photomasks, resulting in masking layers suitable for bulk micromachining high-aspect ratio microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices. MicroChem\u27s negative photoresist Nano™ SU-8 and Clariant\u27s image reversal photoresist AZ 5214E are utilized, along with a barrier layer, to effectively convert a positive photomask into a negative image. This technique utilizes standard photolithography chemicals, equipment, and processes, and opens the door for creating complementary MEMS structures without added fabrication delay and cost. Furthermore, the SU-8 masking layer is robust enough to withstand aggressive etch chemistries needed for fabrication research and development, bulk micromachining high-aspect ratio MEMS structures in silicon substrates, etc. This processing technique was successfully demonstrated by translating a positive photomask to an SU-8 layer that was then utilized as an etching mask for a series of trenches that were micromachined into a silicon substrate. In addition, whereas the SU-8 mask would normally be left in place after processing, a technique utilizing Rohm and Haas Microposit™ S1818 as a release layer has been developed so that the SU-8 masking material can be removed post-etching

Altered susceptibility to motion sickness as a function of subgravity level

Large interindividual differences among 74 normal subjects in the change in susceptibility to motion sickness with effective lifting of the normal g-load by parabolic flight maneuvers were recorded with high test-retest reliability. Most subjects, who were required to make standardized head movements while seated in a chair rotating at a constant speed, demonstrated either a substantial increase or a decrease in susceptibility, in confirmation of a previous study, while a few appeared to be more or less unaffected by the 1 g to 0 g gravitational change. A similar test procedure conducted with eighteen of the subjects at lunar- and Martian-gravity levels revealed further interindividual differences in susceptiblity as a function of g-level. The subjects with gravity-dependent susceptibility revealed: (1) a progressive change in susceptibility as a function of g-load in either the positive or negative direction that was characteristic of the individual, (2) a susceptibility level that appeared to be maintained at the fractional g-load, and (3) immunity to motion sickness at all g-levels tested below the earth standard. The case history as well as ground-based functional and provocative tests of normal subjects proved to be inadequate in predicting susceptibility to motion sickness under subgravity conditions

Spillovers from the Gridiron: Evidence from Women’s Collegiate Basketball

This paper empirically investigates whether schools with an intercollegiate football team experience greater attendance at women’s basketball games. The empirical question is important because if football increases attendance and hence revenue to other sports then these benefits should be included when considering the net benefits of football. Using a cross-section of 329 Division IA women’s basketball programs from 2005-2006, we find that having a football program corresponds with an increase in per-game attendance of approximately 500 people. This spill-over benefit of having a football team should be credited against the costs of starting and maintaining a football team.NCAA, college sports, positive externalities
